HELP!! Newborn in cot

I'm currently 16+4 weeks and so am probably worrying about this way too early but I have been planning on putting my newborn straight into his/her cot once they are born as I have read that Moses Basket are not really neccessary and the safest way for the baby to sleep in her first six months is in a cot in your room. It says this in most of the baby books I have read as well as the MN sleep page.

However MIL and my Mum have both been saying that I am wrong in doing this and as they have brought up 5 children between the two of them they know best and it is not safe for a newborn.

So has anyone else put their newborn straight into a cot and if so would you recommend?

Ultimately I will go with my instincts but would just like some advice really please from people who have put their newbornss straight into a cot.

It's absolutely fine to put newborn in cot. Just follow all the usual guidance about bedding and toe to toe etc. the only advantage of a moses basket is that it is easier to heft a baby out of in the middle of the night to feed.

There's no reason at all why you cant try your baby in a cot in your room right from the off if you want to. Smile You might well find though that your baby doesnt want to sleep in it at first, they tend to like sleeping on you and not much else to begin with. My Boy hated his moses basket and went into a foldaway crib (a bit bigger, but smaller than a cot) by my bed straight away, and moved into his cotbed full-time at about 17 weeks. You will want something downstairs for them to sleep in during the day, but not for many weeks. It might be worth trying to borrow one from someone for that small amount of time.

And use a sleeping bag as soon as they are big enough to.

to your MIL and Mum.

My best advice is to practice saying, "Hmm, that is nice that you did XX with your babies. I am doing YY with mine".

Don't argue. Just repeat the above.

And keep in the back of your mind that since your Mum and MIL brought up their children, some time has passed and things are done differently now.

My DC both went straight into their cots.

Cots are fine to use from birth! You don't need to have a moses basket or a crib, it is just they can be more practical if you haven't the room in your bedroom for a full sized cot.

HLSalter · 03/02/2011 15:53

Thank you for all the replies. Baby will definately be in the cot straight away now I know it's safe.

@AnnieOnAMapleLeaf I have actually already bought one of those but thank you for the suggestion. At least I know I made a good choice.

My DS was in a cot at 10days because he had outgrown his moses basket (biggest waste of money ever) and he was a brilliant sleeper so was quite happy in there.

Prinpo · 03/02/2011 16:16

Brilliant sleeper... I REALLY want one of those this time round. Both DDs were awful.

Cot is fine. I'd really recommend the baby sleeping bags (grobags) because then you don't have to worry at all about the baby shuffling down under the covers.

Scouseem · 03/02/2011 16:20

He was brilliant from day one and my DD was a nightmare so they got there own back on me. Haha.

My prem twins cae home at what would have been 36 weeks and went straight into a shared cot bed. Same will happen this time too.

nicolamumof3 · 03/02/2011 19:07

of course its safe!! how ridiculous...

all three of mine started off in a moses basket or crib. Very very quickly progressed within a few weeks to full size cot as they didn't like sleeping in the crib.

DC4 will go straight into cot. Am also 16+4 btw!

DD was straight in a cot/our bed at night and was absolutely fine, we used a moses basket in the day so she could sleep in the same room that I/we were in - although I can't recall her actually sleeping in the basket on more than a couple of very rare occasions as she generally only slept while being held. Nice for somewhere to put her though for a little while Smile
