About to have DC2 and would like to feel more confident and in control during labour. I can't afford hypnobirthing classes, much as I'd like to. Can anyone recommend any books they found helpful (not neccesarily hynobirthing I don't mean)? Can be a bit 'far out', or alternative, I'll soon know if it will help me or not. Many thanks

The best ones I used were the Active Birth Handbook by Janet Balaskas and Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin.

I also listened to the Hypnobirthing CD that I got off e bay. It was very relaxing but as I've always had good, straighforward births, I can't really say if it made much difference.

Sheila Kitzinger's 'New Experience of Childbirth' is very good on the physiology of birth. There is a certain amount of nuttiness in there but I found it very helpful in my second labour.

Seconding Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I haven't actually given birth yet! But the book is brilliant. I've read it twice already! (32+5)
