Are 3d / 4d scans worth it?

We're considering getting one and I just wondered if anyone else had. Are they worth it? Are there any particular companies you can recommend (or tell me to avoid!)?

Thanks Smile

I had a 3/4d scan with dc3 at 26 weeks. I wouldn't have had one normally but I ended up having major abdominal surgery at 20weeks and was told that I would probably lose my baby so felt that I needed the extra reassurance.

I have to say the scan was a fantastic experience, the pictures were brilliant and we also got a dvd although I am not sure that will get much viewing. It really helped with bonding after a very difficult time. The pictures were amazing and our dd, now 11 weeks looks just like the scan pictures!!

I used a very small company in Lincolnshire that is run by a consultant sonographer who also practised at the NHS hospital and was brilliant.

We had one last weekend at 26 weeks. I am having such bad sickness still and was getting down in the dumps and it was just what I needed! It also was brilliant for my partner as it made things so real - we got the dvd too which I will show my family. Although in some parts it can be quite blurred you really can see what they look like - out little girl played with her feet, yawned and stretched. I loved it!

We had one last weekend, at 28 weeks as we were advised that this is the best viewing time. The detail is amazing. We saw her opening her eyes, so we have some pictures with her eyes open - lovely Smile It's expensive, but it lasts at least 30 minutes and you get a DVD of the whole scan plus lots of still images and, of course, reassurance that everything's progressing as it should. I would certainly recommend having a 3d scan.

We went to a place called Mums in Solihull (West Mids), we've had other scans there and they are brilliant. A consultant does the scan and a midwife is usually present too.

I had a short 4d scan as part of a normal 2d gender scan at 25 weeks ( as they couldn't tell during the hospital scan). The 4d bit was free and I was very glad I hadn't paid almost double for a proper long 4d scan as I thought the baby looked really weird and ugly Shock. I much prefer the cute profile pics we got from the 2d scan to the weird 4d scan pic we got.

I think it depends on how much of a waste/use of money you perceive it to be and how much you expect from the piccies.

We had a gender scan at about 26 weeks as NHS scan couldn't tell us the sex. I rang up before hand and asked if we could have some 3d piccies taken while we were there and told that should be fine - just needed to ask sonographer when we went in. We got a dvd of the whole scan, normal and 3d piccies and to find out the gender for about £70 Grin. They did tell me that they wouldn't really take time to get really good 3d piccies as we wern't paying for a 3d scan, but we were happy with that as 3d/4d scan cost well over double the price. We went to an independant place in kent and had telephoned about 5 different places to see if we could have 3d pics as part of cheaper gender scan - is worth looking around. ALso, more expensive doesn't always = better (have had to pay for early scan due to bleeding which cost £135 and they didn't even give me a photo Shock )

Found it a great bonding experience with baby and DH really got alot from it - it was the first time he came away and felt bonded with baby.
