Any tips for getting rings off!

Hi,

I am just coming up for 37 weeks and have still been wearing my engagement and wedding rings. Midwife recommended I take them off now in case I need a C-section or intervention in an operating room where they must be removed.

Of course, I can't get them off now! I've tried soap, olive oil and vaseline to no avail...

Thank you!

use ice to reduce the swelling and then try oil or washing up liquid...

You need your hands to be cold - they'll shrink a little, making the soap etc work better. Chill them with cold water and try again?

Hope it helps.

Try holding your hand from the wrist on in a bowl of cold water for as long as you can stand it. Cooling the hand may contract things enough to soap them off. (Its only a guess, mind, I just remember how my rings always get stuck in the heat and feel loose in the cold.)

Another vote here for the cold water and oil, soap way.

Also turn the rings not the skin..you don't want to pull at the skin.

Thank you all! Will give the ice a go.

I used icy water and washing up liquid.
Its surprising how easy they are to get off when they threaten to cut them off!

Go out for a walk with no gloves on.

I am sat in my delapidated old house and my rings are spinning round! Hmm

Ellielou02 · 31/01/2011 12:29

You could try a thread slipped through the ring then move in a circular motion whilst pulling the thread :)

I got mine off in the shower first thing in the morning - your hands swell more as the day goes on so try that.

helenlouisey · 31/01/2011 13:52

If you've been trying to get them off already today I'd leave it for now and try again tomorrow first thing in the morning. I had the same thing, I couldn't get ny rings off and made my fingers even worse the evening I tried to get them off. I tried everything, ice, olive oil, washing up liquid, you name it. I got them off first thing the next morning as soon as i woke up with cold water and soap. Good luck :)

owlbooty · 31/01/2011 13:52

Best advice I got was to get someone else to ease them off for you - much easier that trying to do it one-handed. And soap.

OnEdge · 31/01/2011 13:55

what ellielou02 said. we used to do that in A&E when i was a student nurse.

I had this problem with my firs pregnancy. I had lots of swelling due to pre-eclampsia. Even with ice etc I could not get them off.
I ended up needing an EMCS (failure to progress) and they never even mentioned taking my rings off I just went to theatre as I was.
It took about another 2 weeks after delivery for the swelling to go down and for me to get my rings off

cocoachannel · 31/01/2011 16:14

Thanks everyone. No luck today so will heed the advice to try again tomorrow.

butter?

sh77 · 31/01/2011 16:44

I would second giving it a rest until tomorrow. The more you try, the more your finger will swell up.

NotActuallyAMum · 31/01/2011 16:47

E45 cream, and 'twist' it off rather than 'pulling'
