Placenta attached to uterine wall post 2 csec. Help!!

I have just come from my 12 week antenatal scan with this info: placenta accreta (or even increta, an MRI scan will show). Meaning the placenta is anterior and the uterus has attached itself to the cesarean scar.

I have had 2 previous csecs, this will be my 3rd baby. My youngest is 4 months old so the gap is very small and hence the tissue not fully healed.

I have decided to go back to Europe to have this baby as we're in Dubai, UAE and the medical care here cannot deal with such a high risk pregnancy (doctor's own words).

I need to send the CD with pictures on to at least 3 more doctors to give me feedback and tell me what my chances are of having this baby, needing a hysterectomy and last but not least surviving to care for my older children.

I am quite worried now after having googled this complication. Are there any mumsnetters who have experience with this? Can you tell me your stories? Could you point out doctors for me that helped you? What should I look out for? What would you have done or not done?

I am very confused. I saw my baby kicking and sucking on its fingers today, I can't bear the thought of giving up on it. I really need some guidance. Sad

forgot to add that for me i was lucky to have a bleed at 36 weeks as id been offered a vbac and had i not bled and the placenta accreta discovered id have gone into a vaginal delivery and probably would have been really unwell when it came to delivering the placenta.

Its a horrible thing to be going through but at least you know and can try to get the best possible medical care.

Thank you mummyabroad, I have contacted Dr. Lower but he has referred me to someone else in his clinic.

Mister William Dennis (sp?)

I am armed with my docs and reports, so hopefully I will get some answers.

TheFowlAndThePussycat: you had major operations and reading through your post I really felt for you and I am scared of the delivery now. Jeez, why couldn't I opt for a gestational carrier like Nicole Kidman...

Thank you for the contacts for the Rosie, I read over the part with the names in my haste. I have spoken to a nurse there but she was most unhelpful and insisted on a referral from a GP which is fair enough, I guess they don't want people wasting their time.

I am seeing my London GP on Tuesday, staying in the UK till Friday evening, hoping to get a referral and appointment quickly. I just can't stay longer as my 2 girls are back in the UAE and I have no childcare after Friday night. I pray I can somehow see a consultant quickly or at least make contact via email.

I have been confirmed for an appointment with Nicolaides who might be able to make a few calls himself and check out the placenta. It has an odd kidney shape and seems divided in a middle, like another another egg but no baby Hmm

ariane5, thanks for your answer, I know I'm being terribly nosy Blush

My placenta is exactly like yours was. Very interesting to hear about the anaesthetics they gave you and why. I will keep this in mind. Will print out this thread and take it with me.

You were indeed very very lucky to find out about your complications before you went into labour. That would have been horrible!! Very glad to hear your new pregnancy is nothing like it and I hope you will have a good birth and a healthy 3rd bubba. All the best!

abayababe: I would love to meet up for a coffee, let me see how next week goes and I'll PM you!

Hi snow cake, just wondered how you were doing? Was your GP helpful?

snowcake · 13/02/2011 17:25

Hi Fowl,

I managed to get a referral for Mister William Dennes who also works closely with Prof. Nicolaides at the King's College Hospital in South London.

My GP initially referred me to Westminster& Chelsea Prof. Johnson but after a private meeting with Nicolaides and Dennes I had the referral changed to be in their care. My GP was very kind and the practice is ace anyway. They just wanted a new fax number for the new doctor.

It has been confirmed by both doctors at the UAE is not the right place and I will need things like pre-crossmatched blood on standby, a cellsaver (device that filters and pumps your own blood back into your body), a specialist for invasive irradiation (to stop bloodloss and pre-empt a hysterectomy). With all these measures in place and a senior team in the operating theatre I should come out fine, albeit most likely with a scar top down due to the placenta being in the wrong place and getting bubs out quickly.

They will evaluate again at the 20 week scan to make a decision how to tackle this placenta issue. I will move back to LDN latest in June to ensure I'm close to my care. The thing both consultants were most worried about is the onset of early labour as this will most likely cause another silent rupture. So we're looking at a delivery at 36/37 weeks but fingers crossed it will all go well.

Thank you for all those who have contributed and kindly given me tips, told me their stories and shared contact details. I really appreciate your help. Smile

Might do another thread later re hospitals as was asked if I considered a private delivery in the Portland but not really keen...hmm Not sure how the Portland is these days, esp. the NICU. When I last considered it I went for the St. Mary's, IME the NHS hospitals have more extensive equipment and give better care in emergencies.

Hi snowcake, really glad that your referrals and stuff are on track, sounds like your medical team is on the ball! Hope all goes well. Please do update, I would love to hear how you get on.

Glad you have got your referrals! Nicolaides is the BEST fetal medicine specialist in the country.

I am at the C&W under the care of Prof Johnson, who is fantastic. He deals with high risk women. But, I am sure Dennes will also be v good.

Re hospital choice - if there is a chance that your baby will be prem or has other risks, strongly consider an NHS hospital. C&W has excellent NICU facilities.

Keep us updated.

snowcake · 14/02/2011 17:52

Thank you sh77, I heard great things about Prof. Johnson and I know the Westminster is a very good hospital. Given that Nicolaides and Dennes work hand in glove at the King's College Hospital I thought it would make things easier if I stayed with them as a team. I will update this thread after my scan in March.

Snowcake, I've just seen this. Don't know if you're still looking at this thread, but still.

I had placenta percreta with ds2 (2 previous cs). The placenta grew through my cervix. I had previa as well, bled at 33 weeks and had a crash cs. I had a general anaesthetic.

They did the recycling-blood thing, and gave me 16 pints of other people's too! I had him at the Rosie - Hackett and Patient were my consultants too. I still chuckle about those names sometimes ... They did keep reassuring me when I was pg that they didn't lose people with placenta percreta these days, not when they knew about it in advance. Their worry with the baby was that he might be born too early, not that things would go wrong during the birth.

Top-to-bottom scar is a bit of a nightmare - recovery is harder cos it's more painful to move I think. I had a hysterectomy too.

It's pretty grim isn't it? I hope you're ok.

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 21/02/2011 19:47

Warning - this is another Fowl hijack Grin

Hi fruitful, don't know if you remember me from 2 years ago but you were so supportive on my thread (I was rek22 in those days). What a strange coincidence that you were at the Rosie too, I don't think I had realised that. I'm glad you've found this thread, I was hoping you would as I thought you might have helpful things to say to snowcake (as you did to me). Hope you are well!

Here endeth the hijack...

fruitful · 21/02/2011 20:40

Oh hello! I can't believe we never realised you were in the Rosie though - I could have visited, exchanged the Mumsnet handshake Grin.

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 22/02/2011 14:30

Smile That would have been nice! Although I wouldn't blame you for never wanting to go near the Rosie again!
