Is it easier to tell the sex of a female baby than a male baby

Reason i ask this is that i had a scan on thursday of last week- was 16 weeks and 6 days-

I asked them if they could tell me what i was having and the sonographer said she would have a good look for me- then after a few minutes she said "i think it might still be too early to tell, and its best you wait until your 20 week scan"

I thought that by this stage the genitals would be easy to identify ??

Just wondered if its easier to tell a boy rather than a girl and if anyones had any experiences of this ?

I heard that if they can't tell it's 70% likely to be a girl, for obvious reasons, but that applies to the 20 week scan.

The sonographer told me mine was a boy at 16 weeks; she said she was 100% certain, and it looked that way to my untrained eye, too. Confirmed when we had amnio results back.

If they say it's a boy - it's a boy - they saw a willy.

If they say it's a girl - it's probably a girl but cbe a boy - they didn't see a willy.

If they say they don't know - they don't know - they didn't see a willy but the baby was positioned so that there could easily have been a willy there that they couldn't see.

thanks everyone for getting back to me, this makes sense,

This is my 2nd child, we found out the sex with our first child (boy) - was just curious and had heard from friends that sometimes girls can be harder to determine

It was probably unfortunate positioning. A squished up unmusical cord can sometimes look like a willy.

If there is a clear shot, then you look for presence of willy (and evidence that cord is elsewhere) or presence of the "golden arches" (ie not just absence of willy). The latter are easier to see in the later scans.

Remember it's not an exact science.

I had a consultant radiologist give me a guided tour of the baby's organs at a super-duper-high-tech 20 wk scan: "And here are the ovaries, and here are the labia..."

So I was somewhat surprised when 20 weeks later I gave birth to ds. Confused

beckie90 · 30/01/2011 15:33

i know someone who they told it was a boy but was born a girl.
but its suppose to be easier to tell a boy rather than a girl. they told my cousin hers was a girl but it wasnt 100% as sometimes bits can hide. and i was told this time it looks like a boy but they wasnt 100%. unlike last time when i saw my little boys bits on screen with my own eyes lol

mummysweeangel · 30/01/2011 15:34

Oh frogs !!! no wonder you were suprised after being given the guided tour of the female organs !!!

I have heard of a few people this has happened to whereby they have been told its been a girl then later gave birth to boys !

They couldn't tell at my 20wk scan and it was purely down to dd's position. She just wouldn't reveal what she was hiding.

We had another scan at 23 weeks and had a very clear shot of what they say looks like a 'hamburger' (three lines) and it was clearly a girl apparently.

onimolap · 30/01/2011 15:39

hamburger = McDonalds = the "golden arches" "m" shape = the shape of the distinctive creases of a girl!

Perhaps that sonographer was brand averse!

int it strange how they can even get boys wrong lol

mummysweeangel · 30/01/2011 16:04

I will be 21 weeks when i get my 20 week scan so we will see what they say that day-

would be really peeved if they told me the wrong sex and i had went out and bought specific boy/girls clothes etc.

I suppose thats how they normally always cover their backs and say "we cant be 100%"

I found out I was having a girl - and I did - but nearly everyone we told had a story about friends being told it was a girl and it turned out to be a boy. My mw, the woman next in line for her scan, friends...

DH was relieved - I told him if it did turn out to be a boy, it might be cos little willies run in the family... ;)

sam26oscar · 30/01/2011 22:22

LOL lindy
That is so mean yet so funny Grin

Lindy I don't know what is more mean - the fact you said this to him or you telling us you said this to him Wink
