Funny dinner last night

Hello everyone

Can't tell anyone this funny story yet as no one knows I am pregnant (7+5) so I thought i would share it here!

We were having dinner at a friend's place last night and every single course was inappropriate for pregnancy (red meat, raw egg, blue cheese etc). Among the group was a girl who is six months pregnant who got served an alternative each time, but being secretly pregnant I didn't.

Didn't know what to do or say... Blush... So poor DH came to the rescue and sneakily ate most of my food as well as his own. He said afterwards he has never been so full in his life. My hero Smile!

Why is red meat not suitable?

Rupsje · 30/01/2011 13:08

Sorry, should have said: very rare red meat.

I've been eating pretty rare red meat... but only organic local meat from our lovely local butchers. Midwife didn't seem to think it was an issue, as long as I didn't eat cheap rubbish from Farmfoods... I also ate Stilton during Christmas, not a lot but it was a treat. But I've never ever smoked or drank, so I guess things balance out okay. Find it's all getting a bit silly with what you can and can't eat. Surely fuelling the car at the petrol station causes more fetal damage than the odd crumb of blue cheese?

OK, point taken, I am completely silly and neurotic. Just wanted to tell a funny story Sad..

Thats really sweet ! I think its nice when its a little secret and no one knows !

Btw there's different reasons for avoiding different foods, ie listeria in stilton, not sure how you can balance the risk by not drinking !

We decided not to tell anyone before the 12 week scan. As we have Sunday roast every week at my mum's, things got awkward every time the wine was opened. Poor DH used to get so tipsy every week having to neck my wine every time no one was looking.

onimolap · 30/01/2011 14:54

Janoschi: here's a link to the NHS page about listeriosis in pregnancy and which foods to avoid. This issues with thus disease are completely unrelated to the other risks you cite.

Ahhh bless him. I think little things like that are nice for the dad because its like there helping a little bit.
As for if you should or shouldn't eat it then its a personal decision and no one should judge you. I eat what I like but do understand people that don't so ignore the people that ruined your lovely story.

Oh and congratulations :)

Rupsje- Lovely story Smile Congratulations!

Hope your husband isn't suffering too much from the after effects of the meal today.

cocoachannel · 30/01/2011 15:32

ps. what scouseem says is absolutely right - do what's best for you! Personally I stuck to the NHS guidance for the first trimester, then introduced the odd glass of wine once or twice a week and have eaten rare meat if I know the source (rare is still not really for me though- I love my steak blue but haven't fancied that in pregnancy). Runny eggs are a staple on a Saturday morning for me too. I love blue cheese normally but on trying a tiny piece at Christmas 'pulled a face and spat it out like a child' per DH Blush

So go with what you fancy and feel comfortable with! Good luck!

I think your husband is going to really enjoy the double portions! I wasn't trying to undermine or anything, I was only trying to suggest that the odd bit of 'forbidden food' won't cause problems, and if it helps you relax and enjoy an evening without feeling you'll get 20 Questions from the other guests, then I'd do it. Sorry it came out wrong - didn't re-read before posting! And yes, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Rupsje · 30/01/2011 19:38

Thanks for the lovely comments everyone! Made me smile Smile. nancerama: LOL at your husband getting tipsy from drinking all your wine!

Don't worry Janoschi - I agree it is important to relax and I know I am a bit nervous about it all, probably partly because it is my first time....

Thanks again all... Off to make spaghetti and meatballs now, one portion only each!
