Hmm. If you asked your mw she would probably say no, but to be honest as long as you are careful and don't take any unnecessary risks you should be fine IMHO. Baby is tucked up very low, below your pubic bone, so is pretty safe.

chaosisawayoflife · 29/01/2011 14:51

Oh, but not sure about insurance, you may not be covered if you know you are pregnant, worth checking out.

Speedbump · 29/01/2011 14:55

We were supposed to be going skiing as our honeymoon around the same time as you.

Instead I am 30 weeks pregnant with horrible SPD.

I have to be honest and say that in the first 3 months, I would have gone. At this stage, baby is protected by the sac, the uterus and your pelvis.

As the PP said, check your insurance and if you're happy to go then do it. Just make sure that you don't push yourself and maybe go for a relaxing ski holiday rather than a fast paced dawn till dusk holiday.

Speedbump · 29/01/2011 14:56

Just to add,

the above is what I would do and is in no way medically backed so you definitely need to talk to the doctor/midwife before you make your decision.

LadyBiscuit · 29/01/2011 15:00

I would also go that early on for the same reasons as speedbump

And congratulations :)

CrazyAlien06 · 29/01/2011 16:39

Yeah I think I'll chill out:) will speak to mw was getting worried about flying but seems should be fine.
Ill find some lovely things to do at the ski resort, just means can't get away with keeping it a secret lol

Hiya
Im usually the first person to jump up and down (well, not literally cos thats risky) and tell pg ladies not to ski. However at your early stage as long as you are healthy there is no real reason not to. Bump is well inside your pelvis and very well cushioned so at little risk if you fall. However, do think about what would happen if you had a bleed whilst away...would you be able to get to a local hospital, communicate and get the reassurance you need? Check what your insurance company cover too - would they pay for a reassurance scan if you needed one?

Have a lovely time, I'm very jealous, being quite a delicate 20wk and banned from exercise. Stay off the chocorhum or vin chauds...oh and the soft cheeses....and the cold meats...sheesh, pg is not fun really!

lilly13 · 29/01/2011 17:15

Initially it is all inside your pelvis. However, I would not want to ski to avoid an insury (falling or someone running into me) even that early on. If you are a good x-country skier, I would do that. Otherwise, you can do Nordic tracking (snowshoeing) which is a good excercise. I did this at 21 weeks pregnant. I have been doing x-country skiing since the age of 3 and am advaced skier, however, i didn't want to do it at my term as, depending on where you are, there could still be some tricky trails where even advanced skiiers can fall. Have a great time!

I ski-ed at 11-12 weeks when pregnant with ds. I was with (at least for the 2nd week) two GPs (my best friend and her dh) and her kids (10 & 8) who were learning to ski.

They had no concerns about me skiing as it was all within the pelvis at this stage. I did consciuosly ski well within myslef - but the only other difference that I noticed was that due to the hormones relaxing my ligaments (which you do need to be careful of) I was able to do an extra deep snow plough: really useful when being "Mother Duck" to the little ones (there was nother kids in the chalet). I was the best ski-er in the group - so actually the one best "qualified" to adpat my skiing to demonstrate to the kids, when we were skiing with them in the afternoons (they had lessons in the morning).

CrazyAlien06 · 29/01/2011 17:39

Thanks for your replies:0) I don't think I'll ski and I'll be contacting my insurance people Monday:) I'll just go round and round and round on the ski lift haha. Nice flight to Canada to think about what I can do lol x

I went the day after I found out. Unplanned. Had no idea how far on I might have been. I rang my GP, and was told (not quite these words) to stop being precious, and to enjoy it as it was perfectly safe in the first 12 weeks, but not when bigger. The only caveat was no history of mc and otherwise healthy.

I was racing as well, but we all have to do what suits our own attitude to risk.

Second time round, I was meant to be going at about 20 weeks. I didn't go.

jasmine51 · 29/01/2011 18:02

crazy where in Canada are you going? Might be able to give you ideas of what else to do if its one of the resorts I know

CrazyAlien06 · 06/02/2011 22:36

Hey gp told me to ski as normal as will be good as keeping me fit!
Going to Tremblant :D x

I went skiing over Christmas at 8 weeks pregnant!!! My midwife said go and enjoy myself! The insurance there not technically allowed to know, odd but true! And baby was so safe! You'll be fine, your body will know it's limits, I could only ski until lunch as was knackered and sick after that and my muscles were to relaxed to ski all day!
Go, you'll have a whale of a time! And ski resorts medical centre's are usually very good! Better than our A&E's!!!!!

silverangel · 07/02/2011 12:41

I cancelled my ski holiday as after having a mmc last year didnt want to take any unneccessary risks, but if it was first time round would prob still have gone but think there would would always be the 'was it my fault' factor if anything happened...

thehairybabysmum · 07/02/2011 12:53

I snowboarded at 9 weeks pregnant, had a fab holiday.

Take it easy and enjoy!

snowmummy · 07/02/2011 14:13

I stopped snowboarding as soon as I found out I was pg - 8 weeks with first, 5 weeks with second and third. Personally, I don't think the risk is worth it - I know I wouldn't be content taking it easy and cruising blues all day and you never know what other people on the hill are going to do.

TitaniaP · 07/02/2011 14:26

I was booked to go snowboarding over Christmas at about 13 weeks. I didn't snowboard - but that's because although not a bad snowboarder I do fall over a lot. However had I still skied (gave up about 6 yrs ago) I would have done that as I didn't fall over as much when I skied!! That said it was all purely academic as my trousers didn't fit any more by then so had nothing to wear! Have fun whatever you decide to do.
