hyperemesis - anyone taken tablets that work?

My doc has diagnosed hyperemesis gravada (ida?) and has offered me medication but has also said that anything safe in pregnancy doesnt really work. Has anyone taken anything that has worked? Getting a bit desperate now as I'm so dehydrated my pee is non-existent (sorry tmi) and I'm shattered!
Any help most appreciated.

Hi

I had this, and I also worked on advice line for this. I'll post the website link in a mo, but if you want someone to chat to who has been there CAT me.

I had Avomine- I had a few other things first, stematil stopped the vomiting when I was on the drip at hospital (injection), and I had buccanesten tablets for home- this made me worsse so they changed to the Avomine and it was a life saver. Ther are loads of different drugs and they suit differing people, there's a link on the site to look at for details I think.

How far PG are you? I was 8 weeks when I was admitted, the sickness went at 20 weeks but with HG this varies hugely.

hyperemesis website

My thoughts are with you- it's horrible to be where you are.

Try flat coke (apparently very good, I never tried it), foods with lots of water (melon, ice lollies, lettuce) to keep your hydration up and SLEEP LOTS. There is a suspected link between HG and tiredness.

I wouldnt take anything personally. my mum did and is sure that it caused my brother's learning difficulties (probably didnt but she is sure it did) and remember thalidomide?

i has stemitil when i was in hospital and a drip for a day or 2. i was producing a lot of ketones, but they had to starve me as i was throwing up so much they suspected i had torn my thrat (i was throwing up blood). i8t did work, but when i got home i didnt take it as they said, as i felt really weird on it. so i used to drink and eat little and often. i also had to wear my glasses more as i find when i am pregnant my eye sight gets worse for some reason. and when my eyes hurt i feel sick more.

How many weeks? I ended up with Zofran @ 20 when nothing else came close to having any effect.

piffle · 10/10/2005 16:22

I was very close to taking tablets (until I found out they were anti psychotics) I was hospitalised several times and lost over a stone and a half in 6 weeks.
I instead tried a homeopath who at least managed to get my hyperemesis back to basic morning sickness one to two vomits a day and joy of joys I could eat normal things again and cook and get out of bed.
Def worth a crack would also see a reflexologist in tandem
I also used sea bands the acu pressure wrost bands and never took tme off until after dd was born, they did help.
I have real sympathy its a truly miserable existence.
Mine stopped the puking at 28 weeks but the tiredness and iron deficiency took longer to fix.

PeachyClairPumpkinPie · 10/10/2005 16:22

Enid, i'm sure that your Mum's concerns are valid but if you have severe HG (I lost 2 stone, I know people who lost far more) you really have to do something- I ended up being found in a coma by my Dh because I had become so dehyfdrated and was admitted to hospital. I would never recommend un necessary medication in PG, but if Hyperemesis has been diagnosed she needs to follow the medical advice she is given until she is able to tolerate food. I had Avomine with all three boys: 1 does actually have Sn but 2 do not.

PeachyClairPumpkinPie · 10/10/2005 16:23

Oh and if you can get Zofran grab it... it's the best, absolutely a1 tops.

Thanks for all the advice - I'm sitting here in floods of tears (hormones!) glad that some other people have been through it too, I don't feel so alone now!

I'm 11 weeks now, I had hyperemesis with my dd 3 years ago but I was not so exhausted by it and I wasnt a hormonal crying mess that time either. Its definitely worse this time, probably because for the past 2 weeks my dh has been away in Korea with work and I've been struggling at home with my dd on my own. The sickness subsided for 2 months late in the 2nd trimester with dd before coming back at the end so heres hoping its not so bad this time.

Thanks for all the advice - will definitely get back to the docs tomorrow.

Aw, poor you, it must be even worse with kids to look after. It seriously is a major factor in whether I would have any more. Anyway, let us know how you go on at the docs.

romilly · 10/10/2005 20:02

i feel for you hockeymum - i had a miserable 16/17 weeks and to add insult to injury, developed ptyalism to go with the hyperemesis. really pleasant. my doc put me on "cyclizine" tablets, which despite feeling like death - i couldnt bring myself to take a single tablet. have suffered a previous miscarriage so just wasnt prepared to take any risks. i am now 18 weeks and TOUCH WOOD, am throwing up a lot less. my advice is also REST, REST, REST as much as you possibly can. i am convinced tiredness made it ten times worse. hoping you get through this quickly. take care.

helloween · 10/10/2005 20:12

Hope you find something that suits you - as people have already said it's a very personal thing. I became convinced after 4 spells in hospital when expecting dd2(a month in all) and losing 3 stone, that the risk to the baby of taking tablets was less than the risk to both me and her if I starved for any longer.
I took stemetil which worked on and off, cyclazine(?) which didn't, and buccastem - tablet thingy under the tongue - which didn't. I think the injections worked best for me. The pessaries didn't, and the tablets didn't stay down for long enough..
Fine now, healthy baby, won't have any more mainly because of the HG - I was told it gets worse with each successive pregnancy .
Let us know how it goes.

PeachyClairPumpkinPie · 10/10/2005 20:49

It doesn't get worse necessarily, i went on to have two more BUT that was largely due to a great GP who prescribed my drugs from the start with ds2, and had them on hold with ds3 (I needed them only for about 3 weeks- much asier pg)

You were right to take the medication; there's a chat site in America full of women who had forced terminations, due to their meds being unavailable (don't know why- may be a while ago, or may be insurance?). The HG (and the PET that followed- BAD pg!) were awful, but I think the only other option was terminating, that was a no-no for me personally.
