Feeling a bit glum as was induced with DS1 at 11 days over (which was ok but a long long labour not entirely without complications). DS1 was a big babe at 9lbs10.

Now 39weeks plus 3 days and just been to hospital to have an examination and NOTHING happening with my cervix and they couldn't even to a sweep. So, the Dr said she thought i'd probably need to be induced again this time round. Anyone out there had experience of being induced in second or subsequent pregnancies and how was it? Need some reassurance...

Oh yes. I've been induced with all 3. Told DH that if we go for a 4th i'm booking my induction at 20w Wink

DD1 i just had the pessary, but with DD2 and DS i ended up on Syntocin because i was going nowhere fast! Despite all that my last birth was very easy and was only 4h start to finish.

It was fine every time, but you may find you're in hosp for a few days if the pessary/gel goesn't get things going because they can only give syntocin in delivery suite.

In the mean time i found that evening primrose capsules up by my cervix every evening helped to soften and prep for labour!

Iwillcounttothree Sounds like you're a lady after my own heart!

I went through every phase of induction first time round - had the pessary, was over-stimulated, bladder shut down (v unpleasant indeed), nothing happened quickly despite v intense contractions, ARM did nothing then the drip did the trick.

Having been there before - would you wait until you were 40 plus 10 days to be induced or push for it to happen earlier? What do they do if you don't react to the prostin gel? (They won't use the more powerful pessary in anything but first pregnancies). I just dread being stuck in hospital with nothing happening on gel after gel..... Would really appreciate any advice! Did you go for sweeps endlessly?

why won't they use the pessary in 2nd+ pregnancies?

I had 2 pessaries with DD and she was born 12 hours after the first, v straightforward, am 40+3 now and assumed they'd do the same again if I get that far?

loopeylu · 27/01/2011 18:00

Well - at Queen Charlotte's in London, they won't use the powerful pessary propess because it is riskier for subsequent pregnancies as things could happen too quickly (ah..I wish!)

I was induced with dd2 (40 +9)- all I needed was 2 pessaries, great active labour, very positive experience.

I was induced with 1,2 and 4. 1st time (40 +10, hbp) pessary and drip, 2nd time(39)pessary ARM then drip, baby no3 arrived at40+8 on his own, baby 4 pessary then drip at 40+13. With no4 i had three sweeps and nothing happened - am sure he would have stayed in longer but as my waters were leaking and i have strep b he needed to be encouraged out. It was a fairly intense time when the drip went in, but over in 2 and a half hours.

I was induced with 1st, 2nd and 3rd started myself, but 4th and 5th had to be induced. 4th was a pain cos it took days until they broke my water then she wouldn't stay in but each one is different. My 1st worked within hours. Its no different really to the first time, at least you know what to expect x

mummysleepy · 28/01/2011 21:29

I was induced for first one at term +13, had waters broken and synto drip, went hypertonic and they had to switch drip off, but pretty quick delivery within about 8 hours.
2nd time my ?forewaters went at Term +3 then nothing so I got induced at Term +5. This time I had pessary (propess sounds familiar) and within 4 hours my full waters had gone and baby arrived in less than 7 hours from start of induction.

Now pregnant with no.3 and hoping I can do it myself this time! mind you my mum had 5 and had to be induced every time

from my experience being induced doesn't always mean long, drawn out labour

Thanks for the responses. Due on Monday and hunch is that the big baby is quite comfortable in here..even if i'm not!

Once they start prodding, fingers crossed things will move. Positive thinking, good luck :) xx

1st time I had 3 of the prostin pessaries, waters broken, drip for 12 hours, ventouse delivery. 8lb 6oz. Admitted at t+13 delivered on 15th day.

2nd time admitted at t+11 had 1 prostin & good sweep at 3.30, in labour by midnight, 9lb 12oz baby just after 6am! Much better, less pain relief. 1st time was horrific.

Prostin comes either as a tablet pessary in 1 strength or a gel with syringe like applicator which comes in 2 strengths. Stronger one only for 1st application with 1st baby. Hospitals vary in whether they use gel or tablets
