Scan because digital conception indicator not increased very upset

I'm very worried and upset and was just wondering if someone could help me. My last period was the 19th December and on the 16th of Jan I tested 1-2 wks pregnant (I would have been exactly 4 weeks). I haven't really felt at all pregnant so I did another test last Friday which said 2-3 weeks. I then did a test last night when I was 5 wks 2 days and it still said 2-3 weeks. All the tests were done in the afternoon as I need the loo in the night so there's not loads when I get up.

I have been to the doctor who has said that it should have increased and that I may have had a missed miscarriage so has booked me in for a scan tomorrow when I will be 5 wks 4 days.

I am so so upset and was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. What is it likely that they will see tomorrow if anything (I'm prepared for the worst). Thanks.

Yes, the highest reading is 3+.

Actually it says that from 6 weeks after conception (when for some people the HCG levels start dropping) the conception indicator can no longer be expected to give accurate results.

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2011 19:27

It's actually that after 6 weeks the hcg levels become to high to give an accurate result.

OP, your reading may already be too high, your urine may be too dilute, you might have a perfectly normal level of hcg but fall outside the parameters of a generalised test.

If you hadn't done the blasted test, you wouldn't be worrying. No period, no bleeding, no cramps.

I know it's normal to worry in pregnancy but as many people are telling you, this is nothing to worry about in isolation. Please try and believe us.

ShowOfHands · 27/01/2011 19:28

Oh and an opk doesn't tell you when you ovulate. It tells you that your hormones are surging. It's perfectly possible that you ovulated after the positive opk reading so you might not be as far on as you think.

moregranny · 27/01/2011 20:52

My daughter did one at 7 weeks and it showed 2-3, she is now 21 weeks.

Sparklies · 27/01/2011 21:13

I had really high levels of HCG in early pregnancy (confirmed by proper hospital blood tests) - above average for triplets.

I too was dismayed when my Clearblue suggested 2-3 weeks when I was at least a few days over that. I'm now 25w2d! Think I read somewhere that the cut off for 3+ weeks was a lot higher than most people would be at that stage.. can't remember the exact number now.

From their own FAQ:

The overall accuracy of the Clearblue Conception Indicator has been clinically proven to be 92%. The accuracy of the Clearblue Conception Indicator is 96.5% in the 1-2 week range, 76.1% in the 2-3 week range and 96.9% in the 3+ weeks range.

Also remember that wee varies a heck of a lot in concentration depending on when you last went, how much you have drunk since, how much and indeed what you have eaten since and all sorts. Plus some people have more HCG in their urine later in the day just anyway or the morning or vice-versa. It's not like a blood test where it's a similar dilution.

I think your GP is totally over-reacting. And be prepared to not get a scan tomorrow, but if you do, at best you'll see a gestational sac and maybe, just maybe a yolk sac. Most places won't scan before six weeks because it is inconclusive.

Good luck with it all!

ditzy; i agree with everyone else. it can vary quite significantly when your 2-3 becomes 3+; if it's any re-assurance the one time i had a chemical pregnancy it didn't move from 1-2. please try and relax and stop panicking; unfortunately these ladies are right, a scan at this early stage isnt going to tell you much; i had a scan at 6+3 (via the dildocam) and it was only just far enough to make out the embryo. your GP frankly sounds like a bit of an idiot.

thefurryone · 27/01/2011 21:36

ditzy just checked my calendar and according to this I was 5+3 when I tested with CBD it came up with 2-3 weeks. Please try not to worry it's an off the shelf pregnancy test which gives and estimate of how pregnant you are and not a means of accurately testing for HCG levels.

It's also perfectly normal to not feel pregnant at this stage, it was at least another week or two before morning sickness and exhaustion kicked in for me.

I hope things go well for you tomorrow.

Tiredmumno1 · 27/01/2011 23:24

Foghorn just to let you know i had 3+ come up on mine and i was just over 10weeks,

op if you do test again make sure its first thing in the morning

wishing you luck

ditzy1 · 28/01/2011 09:02

Tested again this morning and its still 2/3 :(

sorry to be abrupt ditzy but are you listening to anything anyone on this thread is saying?

Confused

if you used a NORMAL pregnacy test you would have a big lovely positive. no bleeding. and everything would be fine and you would have a big grin on your chops!

ignore the unreliable indicator tests and your arse of a gp and enjoy your pregnancy!

Deliaskis · 28/01/2011 09:16

ditzy I can understand your concern but I think it would be a good idea to step away from the tests for a few days. They're not going to tell you what you need to know, which is whether you're definitely OK or not, and so are only likely to cause more worry or heartache (plus it must be costing you a fortune!). I know it's really hard, but I think you will be causing yourself undue worry, which in itself isn't good for you or baby.

Fingers crossed for you that you get a decisive result in a few more days.

Dx

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 28/01/2011 09:23

ditzy I have to totally agree with everyone else. Stop testing. It isn't helping, you are wasting money and winding yourself up. They can't be accurate for everyone, as everyone produces a different amount of HGC.

A scan probably won't be at all helpful at this stage. Blood tests, should your GP be willing to perform them, would show, but relying on expensive and unnecessary digital tests is silly, as you are simply upsetting yourself for no reason.

I hope everything is OK, it is perfectly normal for subsequent tests to show different things, tr not to worry. :)

LadyBiscuit · 28/01/2011 09:30

Your scan is unlikely to show a heartbeat so may not reassure you - it's too early for a scan (and a waste of NHS resources). Sorry, that sounds mean - I'm not blaming you but your GP sounds like an idiot.

Please stop testing and worrying. I didn't feel anything until I was about 8-9 weeks

midori1999 · 28/01/2011 09:56

Ditzy this is from the following link:

The American Pregnancy Association cites the following chart as normal ranges of hCG for the number of weeks after the woman?s last menstrual period:

?3 weeks: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
?4 weeks: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
?5 weeks: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
?6 weeks: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml

miscarriage.about.com/od/checkinghcglevels/f/normalhcg.htm

As far as I am aware, the CB digi needs to detects 2000 mIU/ml of HCG to read 3+ weeks. As you can see from the above information, HCG levels vary hugely from woman to woman, which presumably accounts for why so many women get worried about the exact same thing you are worrying about now with no reason.

Now, of course, something could be wrong, but that goes for any pregnancy. Equally, everything may be fine and the test really means nothing, except you're pregnant.

Good luck with your scan today, but please ask them about HCG levels and these tests, I am sure they'll reassure you.

Mum2Pea · 28/01/2011 09:59

HI Ditzy
just to echo the same as ecveryone else, leave the tests alone for a few days - this cannot be doing you or your stress levels any good!
Good luck with the scan today, let us know how you get on

Wobblewatcher · 28/01/2011 10:10

You are not listening to the excellent advice given to you on here by people.

Good luck today.

nancy10 · 28/01/2011 10:12

Again to echo what everyone else is saying, STOP TESTING! If you go for a scan you'll be just as nervous because chances are you will not see much. I did one of these tests which came up 3+ (was 5 weeks pregnant.) When I later miscarried (had been bleeding for several days)I did another test and it still said 3+! My miscarriage was confirmed by scan the following day. They are not accurate enough to change on the exact day you think they are supposed to, there is also a very high chance your dates are slightly out anyway.

Sierra19 · 28/01/2011 10:20

I agree, you must stop testing. I am extremely surprised that the doc has referred you for a scan based on this because the indicator is so unreliable. The amount of threads I have seen on another forum related to these is ridiculous. Stop worrying and good luck. Although I am not sure how much you will see on a scan at this stage, I hope that in itself doesn't worry you even more.

BarbiesBeaver · 28/01/2011 10:23

Ditzy this website gives ranges of normal readings at different stages of pregnancy. There is quite a large variation. Those tests giving weeks are a complete nuisance and are not accurate scientific tests. I know you are worried and I think the Dr was irresponsible to say anything about MMC, but I don't think that having a scan at this stage based on a commercial test is a good use of resources. I hope it all goes well for you, let us know what happens.

SummerRain · 28/01/2011 10:29

As an addition to midori's post..., some of us fall even further outside those boundaries. At 9 weeks my HcG levels were 18 mIU/ml when I was pregnant with dd. I was also told I'd miscarried and scanned. DD was 6 this week and has always been an awkward child Wink

I was able to get positive tests with the ds' but at 8/9 weeks with ds1 all I got was a faint line so my hormone levels weren't great that time either.

inbetweener · 28/01/2011 10:50

I agree. You dont appear to be listening at all ?
Or even commenting on anyones advice.
If you weed on a normal basic pg test it would be positive.....end of !

A scan at 5 weeks wont show a heartbeat either and to be honest I dont think they will scan you unless you have had bleeding. If they DO scan you and you dont see a heartbeat becuase its too early then you are going to worry even more.
I know its hard, but you really need to step away from the sticks for a few weeks and relax !

Wishinandahopin · 28/01/2011 10:55

Sorry to barge in like this! It is my birthday today. Period due Monday. Took 4 day early superdrug test today-with FMU: came up negative. Can I trust it and drink tonight? Or is there a slim ( very much wanted ) chance that I am pregnant? I hope you wonderful ladies can share your thoughts and experiences. No symptoms of AF or pregnancy at the mo. TIA x
