Has anyone had any experience of pregnancy after cervical treatment?

Looking for any advice, after having so many different opinions from healthcare professionals.

At the end of 2009 I had a LLETZ treatment to my cervix, following abnormal smears, and a colposcopy. I had 'quite a large piece' removed, according to the consultant. I had problems with bleeding/irregular, heavy, long periods. After 1 month of bleeding I had Diathermy (May 2010). Then, a course of hormone tablets to stop my periods. By July 2010 I was off the hormone tablets and taking the pill religiously to regulate my periods. In August 2010 I fell pregnant. I didn't find out until October (obviously unaware and assumed lack of periods was due to past problems).

So... I have been told by the consultant that did the treatment that I need to be seen by an ante-natal consultant to rule out an incompetant cervix.

I have been told by the ante-natal consultant that I don't need to be seen as I have only had 1 LLETZ treatment.

Also- I have a low lying placenta and am aware that cervical scarring can lead to placenta previa, but my concerns about this have been brushed aside as I am having a scan at 34 weeks to check if it has moved.

Anyone that has any experience I will be grateful to hear your experience and any advice you have. Am in tears after being sent round the houses (not least becaus eI have also been told that this should have been checked weeks ago!!

Sorry, should have said the problems with bleeding/periods were from the LLETZ treatment.

Oh, I feel for you. It's horrible when you're worried and the "experts" tell you different things.

I don't have any experience myself, but didn't want your thread to go unanswered. My sister had some cervical treatment after an absormal smear, resulting in a shortened cervix.

Is that what happened to you? She was treated by having a cervical stitch and carried her beautiful healthy boy to full term.

I would go back to the first consultant and see if he will speak directly to the 2nd consultant, so they can reach a concensus and explain it to you.

Hi, I have no experience but have noticed there is a recent thread titled 'incompetant cervix'. Looking at it you may find some advise there. Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you for replying.

create - I had 2cm removed, so depending on the size of my cervix before I might need a stitch. However, I think that should have been done ages ago, if needed. So I'm worried it's too late (I'm 25 weeks). The first consultant said I need to be seen to have my cervix measured, and I may need a stitch. The second says it doesn't pose a risk, unless you have more than one treatment. Unfortunately I was in another part of the country when I had the treatment and the second consultant seems reluctant to liase with the first Hmm

OffToNania - thanks I will have a look

create - can I ask how soon your sister had the stitch put in? Did she know about her cervix being short before she got pregnant, or was it picked up during?

I can't find the oher thread Narnia, do you know what topic it was in?

In pregnancy on 'next page',- 'incompetent cervix monitoring' is title. Very recent thread. Hope you find it!

FanellaFidge · 26/01/2011 18:05

Thank you... didn't realise there was a 'next page' button!

It looks like they all had their cervix measured during pregnancy. I'm so annoyed they didn't pick up on this sooner... it looks like it could have been checked at my scan.

Also the ante-natal consultant has said no need to check if you've just had one treatment, but I had a LLETZ and diathermy. Unless diathermy doesn't count.

For completely different reasons I had a private scan at 20 weeks. They measured my cervix then. If they won't do this on NHS may be worth doing privately. I would be annoyed too. Didn't seem a big deal to measure my cervix and you would think with your concerns they would just do it.

create · 26/01/2011 18:14

I'm not sure when she had the stitch, but it wasn't very early - she didn't know it would be required before pregnancy and was annoyed this side affect of her treatment hadn't been pointed out.

With DS1 I had my cervix measured as part of a pilot (teaching hosp, long time ago) at my 2nd scan, 23 weeks? so I belive the stitch can go in quite late

FanellaFidge · 26/01/2011 18:17

OffToNarnia - seriously considering it! The treatment I had is marked on my notes, I don't know why no one thought to check it out!

create - I did have it mentioned when I had the treatment, it was remembering that that made me start asking questions, and here I am now! It's reassuring to here they checked that late on, thank you.

Hello

I had a fairly significant LLETZ procedure in 2001, When I got pregnant with DC1 in 2005 I had to be consultant-led, but he was happy that it posed no risks. I stayed consultant-led, though, as there was a small chance of a fast or (oddly) slow labour. I wasn't measured.

With both pregnancies (another in 2007) I carried full-term and had successful deliveries.

Not sure how much Diathermy may affect you, sorry.

Good luck!

thomasina1 · 26/01/2011 18:47

Hi, I had a cone biopsy about 9 months before becoming pregnant with dd. Similar to lletz with quite a lot removed apparently. I did have my cervix measured - i think at about 25 wks and then again a few weeks later. It was just done at the same time as a normal scan - it's internal so done through the vagina if that's not tmi! They seemed more interested in the change in length than the actual length itself iirc. Anyway it did shorten but in the end the consultant didn't recommend a stitch as putting it in comes with its own risks.

nunnie · 26/01/2011 18:59

I had a LLETZ in 2002 and was montiored throughout my pregnancy with DD in 2007, I had my cervix measured and an internal exam which showed my cervix was slightly short and soft so I was given steroids for her lungs just in case. I gave birth 6 days early after a 2.5 hour labour.

My DS would have arrived quicker as I was fully dilated when I arrived at hospital and pushing within 5 minutes, but he was a brow presentation and ended up have an EMCS.

Not sure if the quick labours are related to the Loop or not though.

OffToNarnia · 26/01/2011 19:14

My measurement of cervix was just through an external scan. Just told me how long it was from that.

FanellaFidge · 27/01/2011 07:21

Thank you so much for sharing... My Midwife doesn't seem to have a clue about any of this! So it looks like it definately needs measuring. I won't shut up until they do it!

I read on the other thread that the cervix needs to measure more than 15mm. The measurements they took from mine were 20x15x15mm (that does sound alot?) They also said 'with the central tranverse os measuring up to 12mm'. Confused Does that mean it's 12mm long do you think?!
