Morning sickness - ginger biscuits?

Hi
I have morning sickness pretty much the whole day - but worst in the mornings and early evening. At least I think that's what it is? Quesy feeling, dry wretching/heaving at funny smells but only been properly sick once.
At first I was happy because this meant the pregnancy had taken hold but now the "novelty" is beginning to wear off after 10 days of this feeling which seems to be getting worse.(I'm 7 wks tomorrow)

I read ginger biscuits helps. What about ginger ale/beer? Maybe a dumb question but they are non-alcholic right? I'm clueless...

Do I wake-up and munch on a ginger biscuit?
Anyone got any tips, please?

ginger ale / beer is usually non-alc (there's an alcoholic ginger beer called Crabbies so avoid that)

ginger ale is less sweet an I found it great for sipping on throughout the day for warding off the nausea. Nowt wrong with ginger nuts for breakfast if that's what you fancy!

nannyl · 26/01/2011 11:10

anything ginger will do.

says me sat here nibbling on a ginger biscuit and sipping on coke (that i NEVER drink) just trying to get some calories into me as i have kept down NO food at all for nearly 24 hours.
yesturday i couldnt stomach ginger either

and only just managed 1/3 of a tiny glass of water in micro sips all morning.
Im 7+1

Arrowroot biscuits and mints hepled me. Poor you, i had horrible Morning sickness.

JBrd · 26/01/2011 12:08

Ginger tea is also meant to help...

Your morning sickness sounds like mine (although I didn't have issues with smells). The only thing that really helped me was to eat constantly, never allow my stomach to get emtpy! I had some biscuits or crispbread next to my bed and ate my first snack the minute I woke up, before even getting up. Then I had breakfast immediately. Once I had established that routine, combined with eating at least every 2 hours during the day, I could manage.

Hope it gets better for you soon!

I'm just starting to struggle with this, am 7 weeks today and am surviving on ginger beer (the Idris one).

I'm also drinking a lot of Dorset ginger cordial, either neat if I need a hit, or watered down which is helping (the Rochester Ginger which you can buy in Holland and Barratt is similar but not as hot).

Having been bad at work on Monday, I'm also wearing my travel bands on my wrists today and have seen a marked improvement.

Although I suspect the sickness will get worse before it gets better!

I found bitter lemon mixed with tap water to flatten the bubbles was helpful - went right off ginger and couldn't touch the stuff!

And ready salted crisps seemed to settle things a bit. Crisps are ace.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 26/01/2011 14:53

I have to admit ginger did naff all for me, nothing really helped apart from eating watermelon as it was so refreshing and thirst quenching after feeling so ill and being so sick that I couldn't even stand water. Another thing that helped me was getting those wrist bands from boots that are supposed to work on pressure points on your wrists. I didn't think they would but I was desperate! Good luck, it will pass.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 26/01/2011 15:57

Waitrose do a great ginger cordial - Helped me

SVR28 · 26/01/2011 15:57

Thanks for those ideas. I'll try the Ginger ale to start and have a look at those bands in Boots.
Jbrd - that does sound like me too - eating little and often seems to help a bit. I'll try the crispbreads next to the bed and serenade my husband at 6am with my munching!
Thanks all, those are all helpful.

it was only the expensive ginger cookies with chunks of ginger in them that did it for me Grin

DomesticGoddess31 · 26/01/2011 19:19

I found eating a ginger nut before I even thought about getting out of bed really helped. Don't move till you've finished it and let it settle a bit. Anything fizzy made me feel worse, I think you've got to just find what works for you. Sending sympathy though!

davidtennantsmistress · 26/01/2011 19:21

I had ginger ale with DS which really worked, ginger beer made it worse, this time around i've not taken anything really - just eaten. :o

comtessa · 26/01/2011 19:22

Recommend fennel tea as well. And whatever works for you - I was munching on orange ice lollies on my way to work most days. In early March.

comtessa · 26/01/2011 19:24

Oh, and I developed cravings for Blackjacks penny sweets. Which isn't as crazy as it sounds - as I found out afterwards - aniseed is meant to be good for nausea.

HLSalter · 26/01/2011 22:44

Gingernuts made me feel worse. Try rich tea biscuits, just one in the morning when I started feeling quesy usually did the trick.

Leilababyno1 · 27/01/2011 14:32

Mints! Whenever I pop one, i feel so much better. Seriously try it...Trebors extra strong are the best!Smile

nitnatnaboo · 27/01/2011 19:00

Another one for Rich Tea - gingernuts too strong and sweet for me!

flamegirl77 · 29/01/2011 19:09

Rich teas have been great for me too. I'm carrying some around in a little tupperware container and I munch on one if I feel hungry or queasy in the street!

wubblybubbly · 29/01/2011 19:15

I pretty much lived on sherbet lemons, salt & vinegar crisps and ribena for the first 5 months of pregnancy.

I love ginger normally, but couldn't touch it at the time.

MotherofHobbit · 29/01/2011 19:18

I used to have a long train commute in the morning and found sipping on a really cold bottle of water or orange juice really helped hold back the nausea.

I found it used to hit very suddenly and I soon recognised it was because I was getting hungry.
The trick is to have lots of little snacks so you don't reach that point.

Ginger biscuits worked for me but I think anything small and dry is probably good.

Officerswife · 29/01/2011 19:53

I found that ginger biscuits (as in ginger nuts) were a bit sweet particularly before you get out of bed! A friend bought me some ginger oat cakes, I think they were Nairns, and they were brilliant as they had the ginger flavour but it was a bit more bland so a bit kinder on the stomach.

I also found chewing gum helped a lot as I had a constant horrible taste in my mouth, kind of like when you have a really bad hangover, which made me feel even more sick.

It's no fun but it'll soon be over!

xx

Hi everyone
Sorry to dive in on this thread!
Im 6+5 and starting to get very queasy right through the day - I'm worried this will get worse before it gets better! Does the sick feeling usually stay at the same level throughout or does it intensify? Any advice would be great!

Yaya70 · 30/01/2011 09:59

Hi, my nausea/sickness started at 5+4 and was bearable for a week (afternoons only), then intensified from about 6-10 weeks when it was literally 24/7. Horrendous. Then it started to come and go a bit from 10-11 weeks and was, and still is, manageable as long as I don't let myself get too hungry.

Nothing really helped for me, but sometimes polo mints (I liked the spearmint ones), or other sweets such as sherbert lemons helped. Salt and vinegar crisps sometimes eased it. And I always kept a banana by my bed to eat during the night when the nausea woke me up or first thing in the morning.
