Food to avoid?

I know you should avoid:

Liver
Pate
Uncooked, unpasteurised soft cheese
Uncooked blue cheese
Uncooked mould ripened cheeses (like brie, camembert and chevre)
Raw egg products
Shark
Swordish
Marlin
Uncooked shellfish

Caffeine should be limited and you should only eat 2 portions of oily fish a week. This includesfresh tuna, mackerel, sardines or trout.

If you do not use your oily fish quota on fresh tuna you may on top of this have 4 cans of tuna.

A new one I've seen on the NHS website is cured meats like parma ham and salami??

Hmmm the cured meats thing isn't in the pregnancy book so I'll tell my friend to ignore that!

What else is there?

400mg folic acid once a day until 12 weeks for spina bifida and also green leafy veg and brown rice contain folic acid.

10mg tablet once a day of vitamin D and there is also lots in taramasalata apparantly??

Lean meat, leafy veg and nuts for iron.

Citrus fruits, fresh fruit juice, tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, blackcurrants, potatoes for vitamin C.

Dairy and leafy greens for calcium.

Nuts, pulses, wholegrains and fresh fruit juice also good for increasing folic acid.

Does anyone know the recommended calorie intake for pregnant women. I have 1800-2100 in my mind.

Is anyone avoiding caffeine? I'm a diet coke addict and not sure whether I should be cutting back.

I've read 200mg per day is fine. A can of diet coke is about a quarter of this, which means I can still have 4 cans a day. Sounds a lot!

Best to have less?

nappyaddict · 25/01/2011 19:25

You can get caffeine free diet coke.

Also does anyone know what 5cg is compared to mg? You should have 10mg on vitamin D a day but Pregnacare tablets have 5cg of vitamin D??

1 mg = 10cg.

You can get Vit D from sun too, of course, so perhaps not so important it's in the supplement?

Yes, forgot about caffeine free diet coke!

Re: calorie intake, to be honest I was told an extra 200 calories is more than ample in 3rd trimester. It depends if your friend is sick/vomiting - coke and fizzy drinks were the only thing that has got me through this pregnancy!!

you should eat tuna in moderation as it contains mercury. well, in the usa, women are advised to not eat it more than once a week. btw, it is not an oily fish. i never heard about limitation on intake of oily fish. in fact, my doctor prescribed me fish oils. drink green tea in strict moderation during the 1st trimester. avoid soft boiled eggs.

From the latest NHS pregnancy book

"Do not eat more than two portions of oily fish a week. Oily fish includes fresh tuna, mackerel, sardines and trout"
