Haggis, anyone?

I am 21 weeks with DC1, DH is a Scot and has decided that we should have haggis, neeps and tatties for tea tonight. Question is, can I have any? I don't seem to be able to find anything conclusive on the internet, so thought I should consult the Mumsnet oracles...

sure I read a thread here recently & someone said their midwife said haggis is okay...

PipPipPip · 25/01/2011 15:33

Isn't haggis cooked? Call me reckless, but I reckon you'd be totally fine with anything properly cooked.

SparkleSoiree · 25/01/2011 15:33

Big thumbs up to your DH! Grin

bonnymiffy · 25/01/2011 15:36

Thanks all, that's really quick! I'm looking forward to it much more now, although I might give the whisky a miss! DH is much more worried about it than me, bless.

Okay, so the concern seems to be that haggis has liver & liver has Vit A & pregnant women shouldn't eat too much Vit A... I think you'd have to eat 10 haggis 10 times a day to overdose on Vit A through it. In France they recommend pregnant women eat liver anyway! I think all these dietary things should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Too much salt not good either!

Oh gosh, is Burns Night the same without whisky?

You could measure out 25ml of whisky, safe in the knowledge that it is just 'one standard unit' of alcohol!

bonnymiffy · 25/01/2011 16:30

Well, I could count it as my "unit of the week" except that I actually don't like it! I agree Iskra alot of the advice is contradicted, so maybe I will have that stilton sandwich after all...

Last year we stayed in a really lovely hotel in Edinburgh and I devoured the haggis part of my breakfast. Then I worried about the liver thing. Then I decided to stop worrying. Much better.

Enjoy! [bsmile]

We often have haggis and our favourite is actually Grants tinned haggis. The ingredients state lambs lungs and some herbs but no sign of liver. If in doubt, grab some from Waitrose...yum.

mustdash · 25/01/2011 17:51

You've probably bought it - or not - by now, but the vegetarian ones are just lovely if you are worried about liver. [bsmile]

I love MNers!
I have been trying to decide whether or not i can eat haggis all day and since reading this thread have sent my DH out to get some.
As i type, i can smell the heady aroma of, not very conventional...
Portabello mushrooms stuffed with haggis, layered with thinly sliced chorizo, crispy streaky bacon and when it is just about ready to be topped with really strong mature cheddar and bunged under the grill...serve with mash ....mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........
I am unbelieveably excited!

wow kampakat, sounds amazing! Inspiration for tomorrow's supper...

bonnymiffy · 26/01/2011 08:37

Wow Kampakat! Sounds delish...
When I got home last night the haggis was bought, in the oven and there was half a pound of lamb mince for me as DH is taking the food advice far too seriously. I was allowed a taste and that was it! I nearly cried...
