After GP's appointment.

My last period was on 14th December. Last Monday I did a pregnancy test (digital one from Tesco) that was positive. I booked a doctors appointment for this morning.

Lasy night, just to be on the safe side, I did another test (same pack digital Tesco one) and it was postive too.

This morning I went into the GPs and he tested my urine sample that I took in it was only very very slightly positive. The line was very feint. I am now worried that this might be a chemical pregnancy, I had a mmc in 2008 and really don't want one again. Do I just keep testing each week? Has anyone had similar with Drs tests?

What did the GP say? Sorry I don't have experience of this - when I went to see the midwife she didn't even do a pregnancy test, just believed me Hmm. I would say the digital ones would be accurate and if it wasn't a negative result at GP's then fingers crossed all is well. Don't know much about chemical pg though so hopefully someone will come along who does.

oh bless you. give yourself a break, a few days off testing. try to relax and take care of yourself and do another test in a week if you can wait that long.

if you dont understand what the gp meant (and i dont!) ring him/her up for a chat or make another appointment

LoopyLoopsHasComeBackBrighter · 25/01/2011 09:55

I think the tests that GPs use aren't usually very sensitive.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 25/01/2011 09:55

i would try not to panic yet. It could be that the test isnt as sensitivie.
But also your first wee of the day is always stronger when testing, when did you do your tests?

swannny · 25/01/2011 10:34

Brasso4 Where do you live? Is there a drop in at your local hospital where they can give you an internal scan or anything? How far are you? I don't think it's possible to get a false positive... Keeping my fingers crossed for you xxxxx

ZhuZhuhell · 25/01/2011 11:35

i had the exact same experience with dd1. straight after the appointment i went and got another test which was positive then made another appointment with the doctor and they accepted it and i went on to have a healthy dd.
good luck.

ThatllDoPig · 25/01/2011 11:38

Don't worry! Normally the doctors don't even test and the shop ones are very accurate. If they say you are preg then you are! Do another to put your mind at rest. x

I agree - a faint positive is still a positive. At around 6 or 7 weeks you can go and have an early scan. You might have to pay for it (I did as they only give you an early scan in Herts if you've had three previous miscarriages). It was £90, but worth the peace of mind as I didn't get my first NHS scan until 13 weeks.

Best of luck!

F1rstT1meMummy · 25/01/2011 12:52

I have - the exact same thing happened to me and i am now 18 weeks pregnant and feeling my little bump kick! The tests the Dr uses are a lot cheaper, so they are a lot less sensitive than the ones you get from the supermarkets!
In fact, I did about four or five tests (had been TTC for 16 months).

A line is a line hun - I know its hard, but the best thing you can do is relax, and i knowits hard as I have been there. Perhaps take a test in a few more days?

Best of luck

xx

Oh and CONGRATULATIONS :)

Brasso4 · 25/01/2011 14:13

Thanks for all your comments. I think I might leave it for a couple of days and do another one. I think it is all made worse by the fact that my initial reaction to my test last week was 'Oh my God' and it has taken me a week to get used to the idea. I just get used to the idea and then this spanner is thrown in the works. I also fell down the stairs on Sunday night which has made me worry more and the fact that I don't seem to have any symptoms. The Doctor actually asked if I felt pregnant but don't really!!

I hate the first 12 weeks it is soooo stressful.

I didn't really 'feel' pregnant this time either - not until around 6-7 weeks anyway and then I started to feel awful! I'm now 24 weeks along, so hang in there. The first 12 weeks ARE stressful - particularly if you've had a miscarriage before.

duckmum · 25/01/2011 15:52

My initial test was really faint and didn't get much stronger, at 7 weeks I booked for early scan as previous mc (no point before as scan will not show much). Now 33 weeks and there is definitely an -octopus- baby in there!!
Every persons hormone level can be very different and some people get very dark lines others are fainter but still positive.

Wait a week then do another (easier said than done ;))

jenga079 · 25/01/2011 18:48

Did the doc not offer you a blood test? The line on my test for my first pregnancy was faint too so the doc took a HCG blood test, confirmed the pregnancy and then did another one a few days later to check the hormones were doubling. Maybe wait a few days then go back and ask doc to do a blood test?

JoannaB · 25/01/2011 22:01

No sure whether to post or not as all the other comments have been really positive ones. However... I had a chemical pregnancy in 2007 - home tests (multiple) showed as positive, no AF or any spotting etc. - had an early scan at 7.5 weeks - and unfortuntely nothing there. AF started the following week. I had had a previous mmc also. REALLY hope that this isn't the case for you; but it might be the reality - but of course positive thinking is exactly the thing to do for now. There is just no easy way of getting through this waiting period until a US scan can confirm one way or the other. And even then, if you have had a previous mmc, you probably won't relax until a bit later on, if at all.

I hate chemical pregnancy - makes you feel a whole lot different when someone jokes that you can't be a 'little bit pregnant' - I beg to differ....

I will keep everything crossed for you. Agree with Lunatic though - try not to test to often.....it's the route to rapid madness.

pearl297 · 25/01/2011 22:19

When i had my test done at the GP surgery, the line was very faint (to the point where i took it home and compared it to the ones i'd done at home Blush ) the nurse said not to worry as a positives is a positive even tho it was faint. im 18 weeks now so she was def right. Fingers crossed for you x
