Measuring large- been refered to Consultant?

Hi

I have been measuring large, by about 3 to 4 weeks out for the past couple of GP appointments, so have been refered to a consultant this Wednesday.

My doc said that he will examine me and then determine whether I need an ultrasound or not.

Does anyone know what this examination will consist of? And what will determine his decision regarding a scan?

First baby, so it's all new to me!Confused

Well first of all you can refuse any scans or consultant care if you want to. But they will be checking (a) are your dates correct; (b) could you have gestational diabetes which could make your baby large.

Fundal measurements are notoriously crap at working out baby size though - don't worry! I measured four weeks ahead for two months then three weeks behind for the rest with DS and he came out, fully cooked, at 7lbs.

i had growth scans as my baby was measuring small.

I didn't have any invasive examination, just fundal measurements.

During the scan they measure the baby's femur length, head size, abdominal size and then use the data to calculate weight.

It's nowhere near an exact science though, as I found out from other people's experiences/posts. so many times that the estimates were wrong by 20% ish.
