Buying new mattresses

I have bought a second hand crib and prams and now need to get some mattresses but I'm not quite sure what quality to go for. I don't want to end up paying more for the mattress than I did for the item but equally I don't want to compromise baby?s sleep quality, safety and postural development.

I?m guessing cheapish foam mattresses will be ok for the prams (one of which will be staying at Gran?s house and only used occasionally) but I should get a good quality mattress for the crib. I don?t know whether to get a sprung one or one like this organic one (but it?d cost me £75- yikes!!)

I'm in the same position as you cala so not much help I'm afriad! We are using the foam mattress (looks thin and cheap) which came with the pram but need something for the cot. I keep reading the better the mattress the better the baby might sleep (as it's more comfy etc) but not sure how expensive to go. I've also looked at that green sheep co and wondered about getting their mattreses as they look good. From what I've found out about foam mattresses the cheap ones for cots don't give long lasting support - probably less than a year before they sag a bit and you have to get another.

for a cot i'd always get best you can afford and defnitely sprung. they may be in it for 2years and they sleep alot, so worth going for peace of mind and comfort imo.

for moses basket they aren't in so long tho so foam probably ok?

I'm not asking for a cot yet- just a glider crib which I hope baby will be in for about 5 months, so longer than a moses basket but not as long as a cot! That's why's it's tricky to know what quality to go for as £74-100 is fine for a cot mattress but not for a short use mattress when I'd have to get another mattress for the next baby anyway!

Cheers!

Kiddiecare.com did had a sprung high quality mattress in the sale, down from £80 to £40?? With excellent reviews.

Not sure if their sale is still on but definitely worth checking out.

I wouldn't pay too much for a crib mattress - 5 months isn't long. We have a cheap foam mattress on DS's cotbed, which will have lasted him 4 yrs by the time DC3 comes along and he sleeps excellently. I'm going to replace it with a decent sprung mattress for cotbed this time as we can afford to, but I wouldn't spend much on moses basket or crib really.

I wanted an organic one too and found this one much cheaper than other places:

and I am very pleased with it.

I've decided to buy from here because they had a great range of different sizes and qualities of mattresses (basic foam, ventilated foam, organic, sprung) all at good prices with a one off delivery charge of £4.95 (which considering I'm ordering 3 mattresses plus 3 fitted sheet sets is good value for money):

Thanks!
