Tips for nausea please?

I've got an older baby at home and have only just got a bfp today. Thing is I have had nausea since maybe 3 days after ovulation which seems strangely early. That didnt happen with the first pregnancy.

Anyway tips would be appreciated a lot. On how to minimize nausea, and how to manage with work and the older baby when feeling sick.

TIA

This is my first pregnancy and I found the nausea bit really hard. I absolutely hate nausea - I find pain easier to handle! I can't really help you with the having an older child bit but here are some things I found helpful in coping with the nausea in general:
-to eat. I found if I let my stomach get empty, I would feel even worse. I also made a note of which foods 'went down well' and ate those if I felt sick. Even just sucking on something like a barley sugar used to help. Ice lollies were fab too.
-apparently vitamin B6 helps. It was in my vitamin formula I was taking for pregnancy.
-I also found the acupressure bands helpful (I think they are called sea bands).
-having supportive people around you. My lovely DP picked up a bit of the slack when I felt too rubbish to do anything. I also told my boss quite early on as I felt I wasn't on top things as much as I should be at work. She was very supporting and understanding and it made me feel better that she knew.

HTH and good luck with the pregnancy.

It is simply a case of just trying loads of things until you find what helps you. Personally the usual recommendations of ginger tea, ginger biscuits etc did nothing.
Also seabands don't help me either, I just find them really uncomfortable.

Here are the things that helped me:
Weeks 5-8
Jacket potatoes, plain or with just cheese
water biscuits
toast and marmite

I lived off this for 3 weeks.

Weeks 8 to present (week 10)

Rice crispies with ice cold milk, I have to buy milk every day as even if it has the slightest smell I can't do it.

Mr freeze ice poles

Chewitts (relentless)

cold salad, but can't handle any dressing on it.

Pasta and pesto.

Melon

grapes that have been in the fridge

Still on the toast quite alot too.

It is very sad that food decisions used to be based on what would be particularly delicious and that now I simply reverse the experience and imagine what said food will be like coming back up again... hopefully it won't last forever.

Hope you feel ok soon x

Seabands (travel sickness bands) made a big difference for me. Also try eating little and often. Best of luck!

I find eating makes me feel sick (though not eating makes me feel faint so it's a no-win there!!), so I eat very small portions regularly rather than three meals a day: first breakfast at 7.30am a yogurt or one piece (or even half a piece) of toast, second breakfast about 10.30am egg and beans, or porridge or toast, lunch around 12.30/1pm jacket potato, cheese, ham or tuna and salad, or soup, but may eat only a bit of it, mid-afternoon around 3pm fruit, snack around 5pm cheese and biscuits, dinner around 8pm - whatever I can stomach (I'm usually worst at night!). I'm also trying to eat more at the times of day I feel better (for me mid-morning to mid-afternoon) so that I can eat only very little in the evening but still have got all the nutrients I need.

I think it gets worse when I'm tried so I'm also trying to go to bead earlier on bad days to try to improve the following day's nausea.

Oh and drinking lots of water - it's worse when I'm thirsty!

Hope that helps!

Another vote for the acupressure bands - I have quite a long commute and they've helped me with that.

I find sucking a mint distracts me from feeling queasy, and freshens my mouth - I still sometimes get a bad taste in my mouth, which doesn't help.

I also try to make sure that I eat little and often, and always carry a snack in my handbag.

I lived off cereal and Ginger lollies (you can buy them off the Internet) until the nausea finally passed at about 14 weeks.

It was bloody awful though, so I do feel for you.

treez10 · 20/01/2011 12:13

Lots of good tips here already. I am thankfully through the nausea stage now but ginger really helped (sipping ginger ale if really bad). Sucking sweets (M&S do sugar free orange and lemon or butterscotch). Toast or plain crackers. Also, getting enough sleep as tiredness really made mine worse.

My friend always used to say to me "feeling bad is good" (ie you're pregnant! hurrah!)

Hope you feel better soon.

Agree with everything said so far - Julian Graves do ginger jelly babies which are great. tictacs to take away that horrible taste too
I also found that although I had zero energy and the thought of a walk made me feel ill, if I actually got out into the fresh air I certainly didnt feel any worse and quite often felt a bit better. Make sure you take some snacks and are properly hydrated though.
It is horrible though, get rest, nibble and it will pass eventually x

Word of warning - I had been trying mints and jelly sweets and anything with sugar to keep my blood suagr up. Consequently, from 9weeks, I feel sick if I eat anything with high sugar levels in it. Utterly gutting!!!! I am now living off cheese and wafers :(

arabella36 · 20/01/2011 13:15

Poor captainbarnacle - no sweets!!!

Thanks so much everyone, I'm actually going to jot these ideas down so I can remember them.

I found rice cakes really helpful.

Sunnyandwild · 20/01/2011 17:31

I'm 9 weeks its good to read everyone else's tips! Yes not getting hungry eating little and often definitely helps. I have been eating lots of fruit though mainly bananas. Jacobs crackers with marmite. Crisps. For meals similar to others pasta jacket pots. Find meals need to be quickly made otherwise I'm sick!

jasmine51 · 20/01/2011 17:51

oooo jacobs crackers...with cheese,
fizzy drinks esp tonic or fizzy water
....just eat whatever you feel like but in small amounts and dont get too tired.
