Ferritin levels

I saw my midwife today for my 16w check and to get my blood test results. I knew they thought I was a bit anaemic as I had already been called back for a repeat test and prescribed iron tablets but today was told ferritin(?) levels are 'dangerously' low. Assumed this meant was more anaemic than I thought but she called hospital consultant secretary and said i have to be seen this week so am wondering if more to this than meets the eye?

Am due to do some long haul flights with work and was asking about tips and advice and she said point blank I can't fly anywhere and I'm high risk. I had assumed consultant a ppt I had boomed for march was for my asthma but mw says no will be much more interested in sorting out ferritin levels.
Not really sure what this means in practice and what is 'normal' anyway and am just not sure what to make of it all. And am wondering how to give my boss the good news!

ferrotin is your long term iron stores rather than the instant picture from the haemoglobin reading.

I was told that the reference range was 10-300 and mine was 25 but because I was knackered and losing hair I'm on iron tablets.

I've not tried it but lots of people rate Spatone very highly as it's a liquid form and more easily absorbed by the body so might be worth asking your MW about?

Thanks for the advice, the MW did mention Spatone but as I'm already on ferrous sulphate and taking Pregnacare, she wants me to see the consultant before i add in another iron supplement.
All good fun eh!

I'm on all three and my iron levels have come up.

I started taking Pregnacare when I started TTC in May and have been on ferrous sulphate since October, when my blood work showed I was pretty aenemic.

A month later, my haemoglobin levels were still low (around 9.4) and one of the midwives I saw mentioned Spatone. So I've been on all three (Pregnacare, ferrous sulphate and Spatone) since November and my haemoglobin levels have gone up. I think my last test put it around 10.4, so I think the Spatone really did help. Make sure you take it (and other iron supplements) with orange juice or other vitamin-C rich food/drink; it helps the body absorb it better.

I've also been feeling really good since November -- lots of energy, not needing naps anymore. Not sure how long it will last (I'm 32 weeks tomorrow), and not sure if it's only down to the iron or if the hormones had anything to do with it, but I'm not complaining!

Everyone's different, of course, so you may want to check with your GP or a consultant before adding Spatone to your regime. Good luck!

Hi oompa, I also had very low ferritin levels when ttc first pregnancy, in fact I think the level was 10 Shock
I started taking ferrous sulphate 600mg a day and my levels went up reasonably quickly, so that when I had levels tested during pregnancy they were already fine (think that was about 6 months later). Regarding the flights, I was also traveling a lot for work and was never told that flying was a risk, however I don't know your circumstances or obviously any other factors, but apart from tiredness I don't see how low ferritin levels would mean that you couldn't fly. Can you check this with anyone else in the medical profession?
