Hi.
I couldnt breastfeed with my DC1 but am hoping to be able to this time. Been looking at the nipple creams but they all seem hidiously expensive! Am I being stingy, or is there a good cheaper one that anyones used?

Many thanks x

The best one (and worth the money) is Lanisoh lanolin.

Second the Lansinoh. Yes, it's a tenner a pop BUT I got one tube and have half left for DD2. HOWEVER my friend got some on prescription!! Give it a go!

Lansinoh has excellent marketing (placement via NHS).

You might also want to consider Kamilosan (the chamomile is very soothing).

plantsitter · 18/01/2011 18:02

I've used both Kamilosan and Lansinoh and found Lansinoh to be better. 'Course it's a personal thing.

I was stressing about the cost but DP (oddly) said 'don't compromise on nipple health' and bought it for me. Anyway, like debka mine did 2 extremely chompy babies.

I got lansinoh on free prescription as my health visitor wanted to try and help me to keep breastfeeding and this cream enabled me to do so.

Tried Kamilosan but came off on the breast pads where as Lansinoh is a bit like superglue and stays on until you wipe it off at the next feed.

I think you can get smaller tubes of Lansinoh for around a fiver. Only some pharmacies sell them but they are available. I got the more commonally available bigger size and only used a small amount of it. It does have a shelf life of a couple of years (?) if you are planning on having another one but do check the dates. I offered a tube to a friend and saw that it was well out of date. Obviously I didn't pass it on!

I did get some free samples in my Bounty pack from the hospital that kept me going for a bit. Agree about the Kamilosan, its much greasier.

Defo lansinoh! In know it's £10, but it'll last you a lifetime! Mine lasted through two children! You only need a little and nothing works as well!

rubyslippers · 18/01/2011 20:57

Lansionh is a 1/3 rd off in sainsburys

mamadiva · 18/01/2011 21:07

I got new from Ebay

There are always people trying to get rid for some reason and a lot of ebay stores do it for £7/8

Eebs · 18/01/2011 21:14

Lansionoh and I got it on prescription for both my pregnancies. The first time I rang up and they prescribed over the phone as i had just had dd and the second time I asked my GP when I went for a check up during pregnancy. She was very happy to prescribe. And of course it is free with maternity exemption!

justbeingmummy · 18/01/2011 21:14

Thankyou for all your responses ladies, I really appreciate the help, will try Ebay and if no luck I will pop to sainsburys :)

I bought some Lansionh in John Lewis yesterday for 7.99. I think it will last ages as its really thick and you only need a tiny amount. I have started using it already as my nipples are getting a bit dry at 22 weeks and I intend to at least try and BF.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/01/2011 10:27

The thing is, if breastfeeding is going well, you shouldn't need any nipple cream.

And even if it goes a bit wrong, better to use your milk, from the end of the feed, to soothe your nipples.

Sore nipples that need cream, mean something is wrong, and you should see or speak to someone from BfN/NCT/LLL/ABM.

I used Lansionoh at first with DS1 and found it to be brilliant. Once I'd got used to feeding though, I found I didn't need to use anything so I have some left for DC2 (due in two weeks).
