Piles in pregnancy

Am only 5 months into my 3rd pg but have got really painful piles. I've been pretty good, drinking loads of water and eating fruit and veg. What else can I do to stop them getting worse over the next few months?

force down bran flakes maybe? Keep doing what you're doing.

I would go to your GP though if they're painful to get something to get rid of them rather than suffering.

I'm 36 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy!! and have had quite severe piles in this one. When going to the toilet, lean forwards and put weight on balls of feet. I have had to try 2 over the counter medicines and they didn't touch the pain. Got prescription from GP today, know they will clear up after baby's born but didn't fancy going through the last few weeks and labour with them being so painful. By the way just had telephone call with GP, didn't have to show them!! Grin Good luck with next few months.

Sorry you are suffering, the same thing happened to me with DS.

Dont eat the bran flakes though!! There is a book called Fibre Menace which explains why. Basically natural fibre is good (vegetables and fruits) but anything heavily processed like Bran flakes, All Bran, Ryvitta etc is very rough on your system. It is just forced through and can cause damage on its way down and out. It also swells and hardens on its way through making your stools larger, harder and therefore more difficult to pass. Fibre is not broken down by your body in the way that other food groups are, so although it is good for "getting things moving" its a bit like driving a tank down a side road. Although you need to avoid being constipated, you should aim to do this by keeping your stools soft so they pass easily.

Here are some things that can help:

Get a small footstool (toddler steps dont look too out of place in the bathroom) and use it while you go to the loo. This helps you evacuate your bowels completely and without have to push and strain as much.

Use Aloe Vera gel (supermarket, sun tan cream section) as a cooling relief. It wont cure it but it is very soothing and you can apply as often as you want.

Make it your goal to find out what kind of foods act as stool softeners for you and eat them regularly. Try black beans or kidney beans.

Add lots of apple cider vinegar to your diet, it contains lots of minerals that are good for strengthening veins but also helps you digest your food better and softens stools.

When you have had your baby (not before, because its not safe) take Butchers Broom and Horse chestnut vitamin supplements, both of which are good for your viens, so they help with piles and varicose viens too. (lets hope you dont get them, though, being cursed with piles is bad enough Grin)

Anusol suppositories (sold at Boots). Pure vitamin E oil for softening and pain relief (sold at Holland & Barrett).

tiredand grumpy used the prescription (Uniroid) last night that GP gave me, has made a real difference, feel so much more comfortable etc and therefore my mood is so much better - still at big and pregnant grumpy stage but no longer panicking about my bum so to speak Grin

drink lots and lots of water! i had piles when pregnant and ended up with one the size of a sausage during childbirth (it disappeared again within a fortnight), but have been left with an anal fissure and the water (and lactulose) keeps it soft enough to pass... i drink about 5+ litres a day atm...

tiredandgrumpy · 18/01/2011 18:37

Thank you all. I had wondered whether I should be drinking even more. I will definitely contact gp if they get any worse, but there are plenty of ideas here to try first.

Go to GP!!! Your pregnant, you will have the most embarrassing illness over next few months, better get used to talking about this stuff to GP!

I put up with cystitis for 3 weeks and my bladder swelled up! the GP couldn't believe I had put up with it for so long!!!

mandy1978 · 18/01/2011 22:15

oh my god me too!!!! it is uncomfortable, i pretended to myself that it was the weight of the baby pushing down but then i took a look (brave!) and realised no, it actually is piles....

going to dr about it, it bloody hurts and i dont want to push a baby out and possibly a bunch of grapes too....

suddenyl remembering what it is like after having a baby, it was painful if i remember. 3 and a half years dampens the memories!

xx
