Lovely topic - diarrhea in pregnancy

Apologies for tmi.

I'm 22wks with dc3. I am prone to getting upset tummy/diarrhea anyway (when my period started, when stressed etc). I also had my gallbladder out last year and htis is my first pregnancy without a gallbladder, which might be a contributing factor.

But I pretty much have diarrhea every day. Every day. I rarely have a normal poo. I'm getting a bit sick of it every day. It's not always run-to-the-toilet type of diarrhea (just runny when I do go) but recently it is a bit urgent. Any ideas how to deal with it? Food to avoid? Anything?

Anyone else had this? I read much more about constipation in pregnancy.

Yes, I had this for about 5 weeks or so about 30 weeks. MW thought I had picked a bug up from DD1. She suggested it would go away on it's own (it did) but I could get a stool sample looked at by the docs if I was worried.

Are you taking iron tablets? Sometimes this can aggravate.

NorkilyChallenged · 16/01/2011 12:53

Thanks for answering, good to know it's happened to you and gone away by itself. Hope that happens here too.

Not taking iron, just pregnacare.

MW did mention seeing gp if it carried on and doing stool sample (have NO idea how I would manage that, don't want to draw graphic image but honestly, wouldn't be an easy task!) but I just don't know.

Yep I had it for a month at the begining of this pregnancy, and had it off and on the last few weeks, im now on iron, which is ment to make you constipatedConfused Its awfull, I was worried the baby wasnt getting what she needs, but was reasured by doc and, like blanche has said, a stool sample to put your mind at rest.my baby is thriving, I just feel crappy! but i'm sure its just your body responding to hormones and changes, but I will go away, hopefully sooner rather than later :)

Try bananas, they act as a binding agent. My mw told me to try them as I was having the same thing and they really work for me. If I miss a day it comes back (I'd had it for about 3 weeks at end of second trimester, beginning of third and now 36 weeks). They're also really good for restless legs/arms.

I was expecting to get constipated in pg not like this! Mw said it just happens to some women. Make sure you're drinking enough to replace fluids.

I'm on Pregnacare too but don't forget, that has 17mg of iron in it.

Norkily I have no gallbladder either and I found I was like this throughout my last pregnancy, but not yet during this one. I joked last time that was why I put on so little weight, as everything went straight through me!

No advice as nothing I did/ate helped, I think it is part of having no gallbladder as I know some people suffer with this even when not pregnant, but I can sympathise!

I always just think it's better than being the other way!

I am 23 weeks and the same and sorry for TMI but my stool sample was more of a sandwich bag affair!

Very similar to you now gallbladder and it is always the firat thing to go if anything but normal happens. I have stopped taking my pregnacare as it made me worse but something to talk to your MW about.

I was advised to keep my fluids up and I have been continuing with fibogel so I hope its ok for you and you feel better.

Hello, I've had this wonderful symptom since before I knew I was pg. I'm 30 weeks, and things are still somewhat 'soft' most of the time!

I wasn't surprised in the first trimester, my digestive system was a mess in general, and I was thankful for diarrhea instead of sickness (felt awful, but never threw up).

I haven't noticed any pattern/relationship with particular foods. I'm otherwise healthy (no anaemia), but my diet is mainly veggie (PKU veggie DH), which could have something to do with it.

Better this way than constipation, I reckon!

Hi - I'm 6 weeks and had diarrhoea for the first time yesterday afternoon/last night since finding out I am pregnant. I woke up this morning and everything seems to have settled down and I hope it stays that way for a little while. My initial thought was oh no, had I picked up a stomach bug somewhere. Agree that you read quite a bit about constipation being a problem during pregnancy but not so much about diarrhoea. Anyway, i got on the internet and googled as much as I could (not always the best thing to do..!) and from the various bits of info I found it does seem to be quite normal for diarrhoea to be experienced. I think the hormones just do strange thing to your digestion.

Main thing would be to keep your fluids up and let the GP know if it continues. Also, get in touch with someone if it's accompanied by any bleeding/cramps/vomiting just to make sure all is okay.

I am in full on worry mode at the moment as in I feel and think about every twinge/rumble down there and when I have times where I am feeling pretty good (not queasy/not too tired etc) I then worry that I should be feeling worse and is that a sign of problems. I just have to try and relax and just enjoy the fact that I am pregnant and amazing things are happening and think positive.
