Hyperemesis - Why a scan?

Been in hospital most of the week with hyperemesis, but that seems under control now with some lovely drugs.

I was discharged yesterday, but before I went, they said someone would call on Monday and give me a date for an early scan. I'm only 7 weeks.

She said there is something they need to check that could be the cause of my hyperemesis, but didn't elaborate, and I was so happy to be leaving and not vomiting that I didn't think to ask.

Now I'm curious. Any ideas?

I think Imarriedafrog has got it. HG is more likely with twins.
Though lots of people get it with single pregnancies - I did 3 times!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 15/01/2011 20:12

thing is, they don't know what causes HG, so I can't think of anything else it could be.

Or possibly checking for a molar pregnancy as this can also cause hyperemesis due to very high levels of pregnancy hormones. But I would have thought if they suspected that, they would have scanned you already, as I think it is fairly clear on scans from five or six weeks. Leaving it till later might be because they are waiting to see if there are two heartbeats.

Blimey :)

I shall be very intrigued to see what happens then. I'll let you know.

My sister had a molar pregnancy, any idea if they run in families? She wasn't excessively sick though, that I can remember.

I was pretty damn sick with my first preg, bordering on hyperemesis though I got away without a hospital stay.

Actually, I kind of wish I had, as I suffered seven weeks of misery without respite, and this time I have magic pills which are brilliant.

I also think as others have said that it is to check for more than one baby.

also I think it may be a double check to make sure you are actually pregnant. I was told something like this when I had hyperemesis, no idea if it is true. If the hyperemesis is definitely connected with a pregnancy, then they know what the cause is. If someone is vomiting profusely and they are not pg (despite a +test) then they need to find out fairly quickly wha the cause is.

Hmmm yes, they did make me take a pregnancy test on arrival, it could be something to do with that.

Lots of tummy-prodding too, but I don't suppose they could feel much at 6+ weeks even with twins?

yep I was in hospital with HG at about 10/11 weeks and because my dh is a twin all the medics assumed i would be carrying twins.. but i wasn't! Just one healthy ds Smile

I had a gastroscopy when I was pregnant. My sickness was so bad that I was bringing up blood. Consultant thought I had a hernia. Could it be something like that?

SarahScot · 15/01/2011 21:08

Yep, I was told it was to check for twins. My GP and MW both asked me if twins ranin my family when I told them how ill I was.

Junebugjr · 15/01/2011 21:10

I asked the midwife this when I was in hospital for Hyperemesis too.

She said it was to check if there were twins, or a molar pregnancy. Im a one of a conceived triplet, so they were suprised it was only one. Thank god I say, imagine the sickness with double the hormones!

laylasmummy09 · 15/01/2011 21:54

i was also told it may be a twin thing but not offered a scan, it was only 1 beautiful dd, arent the pills a lifesaver thank god i dont need them this time Smile x
