HELP please! Gardening

I was outside with DD and ended up doing some gardening. I cleared, cleaned and swept the decking, cleared part of the garden, picked up a load of leaves and spread out bark chippings so she can go on her swing without getting muddy. I was feeling really proud of myself until I realised I'm pregnant and not supposed to be gardening without gloves.
I've scrubbed my hands and nails (3 times). I know I'm probably being paranoid but I have had a previous stillbirth and am worried.

Does anyone know if I should be doing something?

Thanks :)

Anyone? Please? Should I ring the midwife or stop worrying?

If it will put your mind at rest ring the midwife but as long as you have washed your hands well you will be fine :)

Thank you. Thing, is, my midwife isn't really ringable here... They are only available 8.30 - 10 am on a weekday, so pointless really.

I'm sure I will be fine, I'll just never forgive myself if...

Just think of the lovely fresh air you have been breathing in while in the garden, that would have done you all good, I had two healthy children 27 and 30 years ago, one of whom is pregnant now, at the time I kept goats and was always in the garden, cleaning them out, gardening and spreading the proverbial, all without gloves, I feel sorry that you girls have to worry abut everything these days, we just went about our lives oblivious to it all, every day for lunch I had a salad and mayo sandwich and a glass of red wine and didn't really have a clue, the other child has turned into a 6ft 2 strapping great thing, don't worry I am sure the good time you had far outways any risk.

Thank you, that does help. :)

Goodness me, I never even knew pregnant women aren't meant to do gardening! My DH is a gardener and I can't really escape it. DD is fine though, if that's any reassurance, and I spent a lot of my first pregnancy in the garden as we had just moved and it needed completely landscaping.

I actually work as a gardener and worked through both my pregnancies.I don't wear gloves either. You washed your hands and I assume that you weren't eating dirt-you'll be fine.Smile

LisamumtoJake · 14/01/2011 23:24

you'll be fine! i gardened often when pregnant, and sometimes i found myself doing the same, as long as you cleaned your hands you'll be fine!! :)

PipPipPip · 15/01/2011 00:40

The benefits of gardening hugely outweigh any risks :)

Enjoy the activity! I have bought a box of latex gloves (non latex ones are available too) and slip on a pair of those if I'm rummaging around in the garden.
If you find yourself without gloves, put a bit of barrier cream or vaseline down your nails to stop soil getting wedged down there.

The main danger from soil is toxoplasmosis. 60% of UK women have immunity to this so if you are a habitual gardener or had pets when you were growing up the chances are you are already immune. dont stress about it and just take some basic precautions from now on
