Irrationally nervous about NCT tomorrow!

Now I know this will sound crazy (blame hormones!) but I am really getting nervous about NCT class tomorrow! My worries are varied: will the people be nice? Will I manage to stay awake for the seven hour intensive class? Will DH make lots of inappropriate jokes!?

I feel like it's the eve of the first day at school...!

When we finished our NCT classes in December my husband turned to me and said "that was the best £180 I have ever spent". He is normally pretty apprehensive about meeting new people. Our teacher was brilliant and we now have a support group of people going through the same experience.

If the class is anything like ours you will learn so much and feel so much more knowledgeable and prepared for labour and the first few weeks of parenthood. Hopefully if you don't feel you immediately gel with people there will be a coordinator to encourage you to meet up after the course is over.

I'm really nervous too cocoa! I'm not really a sociable type and am a bit worried I'll offend people if I don't want to be best friends forever just because we happen to have babies in the same postcode!

However, am trying to have an open mind and also consoling myself with the fact (as you have just proved!) that most others who will be going will be feeling the same. If nothing else, I'm sure as balena says that it will be really useful for gaining knowledge and feeling prepared.

Think I'd be glad if somebody was there making jokes, my worry is that it will all be a bit intense and serious - my DH got a very stern look when he made a flippant comment about whale music and the birthing pool room when being shown round our MLU. I thought it was funny though Grin

Thank you both- your comments have made me feel much better Smile

Hi,

i felt like this about my classes but I found most people went to the classes to meet other soon-to-be-parents and so everyone was very friendly and chatty and 'on their best behavior' which was funny. My DH made a couple of inappropriate comments (honestly, he just can't help himself ) but it worked as an icebreaker and all the blokes were soon making sneaky jokes and arranging to play football.

We had a lovely group and most of us still meet up regularly 18 months later. It was great to have people to meet for coffee/lunch/baby cinema/baby groups etc while I was on maternity and lovely to be able to chat about feeding or sleeping without being a baby bore to my other mates. A couple of people gradually stopped coming along and some of the people we probably wouldn't see if we didn't have the kids in common but we have made a few really good friends. I'm really glad I did NCT even though we had a rubbish teacher and bits of the course were crap because of it.

I was also nervous - having DH there with you helps. If you walk out and think "I don't like them" then it's not just you by yourself. But more likely you will find a lovely bunch of like-minded people all teetering on the brink of something life-changing and knackering wonderful.

I love my NCT group too. DD was born 2.5 years ago. Who else would listen to you tell your birth story in gory detail, nod and sympathise, and share advice on things to buy for how to look after your baby?

Go in with an open mind, and have fun!

Just to say thanks again for all your replies and to report that so far my fears were totally unfounded. Everyone's really nice, teacher is great- and although DH has cracked the odd joke so have the other partners!
