NT Scan, Bloods put me at 1:8 risk of downs!!

Hi All,

Hospital called me this morning (not a good sign when they call you!) to say that my adjusted risk of downs is 1:38 after NT scan, but the Biochemistry result (Bloods) was actually 1:8. I am in absolute bits as after the NT scan the risk was 1:611 so they obviously have picked something significant in the bloods. I am 39.5 yrs old and otherwise perfectly healthy.

I am coming up to 13 wks, so can choose to wait till 15 wks for amnio, or I can do the CVS now. My hospital don't do CVS so they will refer me to another NHS hospital (about 3 hrs away) or I can pay to go private (as we did with the NT scan). I read it takes about 2/3 weeks for the results of the CVS which kind of defeats the object of not waiting. Does anyone know if the results can be got quicker. Obviously I would like to know asap.

Please don't judge me but there is no way we can have a child with downs which is the reason we had the NT scan in the first place.

Any advice/help would be welcome. Obviously this has knocked us for six because we were quite confident all would be OK because of the the scan results. Thanks for reading.

Sparklies - the first two bleeds were after erm Blush sex but there was no reason for the 3rd bleed. In fact it was at 8pm and I was on the phone to my MIL at the time!!

According to the yukky doc I got first 2 times, I am "very vascular" which would explain why I always bleed with smears, etc. I had very light pink bleeds after sex with my other 2 pg's but this is darker and more. Perhaps because I am 6.5 yrs down the line?

I am feeling quite positive today. I have the full support of OH and the (few) friends and family that know.

Girlfromdownsouth, just wanted to wish you luck for the CVS on Monday. I had a CVS a few weeks ago (on twins, both at high risk). One thing that the professor who did the CVS told me (Prof Nicolaides) was that all the risk is during the procedure itself, so after the CVS is done, make sure you ask the doctor to show you the heartbeat. As long as it's still beating away, the risk of miscarriage is pretty much gone.

Do you know if the nasal bone was present on your scans? In contrast to what RJR was told, this is a really important marker. About 75% of babies with Down syndrome (and only 1% of chromosomally normal babies) lack a nasal bone at 12 weeks.

Best of luck -- I have everything crossed for you.

lilly13 · 15/01/2011 13:18

can't offer advice, but sending you hugs!

girlfromdownsouth · 15/01/2011 13:22

Thanks Yaya70, lucky you having Prof Nicolaides!! If we didn't live in Wales I would def go to him.

I do not know about the nasal bone but will ask them to check this on scan on Monday. Am nervous (I do not like needles!) but will try and remain calm. It is going to be a heck of a day as it takes us 3hrs each way to get to Cardiff on top of all the worry and arranging childcare for my other two - who don't know atm.

Would not have got this far without all the support from the fantastic MNetters - thanks all!!

Girlfromdown south, I too want to wish you loads of luck tomorrow. I went through same thing in Dec 2009 and it knocks you for six. I was a 1:2 risk. Just try and think of all the questions you want to ask doctor now as you may forget when actually there. Will be thinking of you and keeping everything crossed. I am 6 weeks pregnant and totally dreading scan. Big hug.

georgiegirl15 · 16/01/2011 18:49

Hi Girlfromdownsouth!
Loads of luck and best wishes for tomorrow! We had bad blood results too 1:71 and were too late for a Nuchal Fold Test - was quite cross that I wasn't offered it! No judging I promise - we decided to wait and see - we were offered amnio but have decided against it. I have my 20 week scan on the 27th and am armed with a list of the soft markers so we should hopefully come out of the scan a little bit wiser. We will continue with the pregnancy even if it shows soft markers to indicate downs. Not judging - I work with PMLD pupils and know from experience the vast range there is and how difficult life can be. My DH is supportive so we will wait it out and pray....lots. Good luck - am in Wales too and have looked into the Spire Clinic when having a wobble after the midwifes phonecall - it seems excellent! Thinking of you.

runnyeggsareyummy · 16/01/2011 19:06

Good luck for tomorrow. We are in a similar situation with an amnio for bad bloods(no NT in our area) which we will be having tomorrow. So do know just how you are feeling. Am almost 17 weeks and have been able to feel baby move for a couple of weeks. Like you we would probably terminate for a serious chromosonal abnormality, though my other huge fear is that I may miscarry. It is just a horrible wait, you just have to hold on to the fact that the chances are much higher that baby will be ok than not.

girlfromdownsouth · 17/01/2011 21:03

Hi all, the CVS today went "as well as it could possibly have" - doctor's words. It hurt a bit when she injected the anasthetic int my belly - did it twice because the first one didn't go deep enough. Just as well as hubby said the needle was v long!! I don't know because I didn't look. I just shut my eyes most of the time and tried to take deep even breaths!

Baby on scan after seemed quite happy. Home now, v tired (3hr journey each way), belly a bit sore but otherwise fine. Staying up to watch "One born every minute" then bed.

Roll on Wed/Thurs for results!

Fantastic News!! The hospital in Cardiff just called me to say that there is absoultely no evidence of Downs in my CVS. I was very worried when they called as it is 1/2 days early but she said that there was no point in waiting as there was no evidence at all.

They will continue to grow the culture for 10/14 days to check for other abnormalitites but I tested low risk for everything else so feel it's pretty much a done deal!!

We are elated as we have been through so much and have not been able to enjoy this pg or tell the children, which we can now do. Hopefully the morning sickness will start to ease now!

Thanks so much all your your encouragement and support. Smile
