What clothes do you need for a newborn i.e sleepsuits, outfits and how many of each?

I just got one pack of each. It was unusual for DD to need more than 2/3 sleepsuits a day (unusual for her vest to need changing more than once a day). You can get multipacks of 6 or 8 in quite a few places now. After a week or two I switched into putting her into 'proper' clothes during the daytime and just used the sleepsuits for night. I haven't met anyone who found the scratch-mitts useful! Some sleepsuits have a folding bit on the sleeve that can act as a mitt/glove if you want one, or if it is a cold night & you have a child like mine who always (even now, years later) kicks off any sheet/blanket.

My DD only wore vests and sleepsuits til she was 3 mths old - they are so much easier than proper clothes!!! However you may be more stylish and less lazy than me!

In terms of how many you need, I think we started off with 9 sleepsuits plus vests, but we were lucky in that she wasn't a pukey baby so we didn't need to change her clothes during the day. People will probably buy them for you too so maybe don't stock up on too many.

Good luck!

9 of each to start would be enough, but we did need scratch mits, or the foldy bits on sleep suits for our two very scratchy boys. Oh and buy one or two newborns and more 0-3. The newborn stuff lasts about a week if you have anything over a 7lb baby.

Ooh yes and sizes - DD was 7.9lb and Mothercare newborn stuff was massive on her - I found next true to size.

You will only want to put a new baby in vests and sleepsuits. The little outfits people will buy you are lovely but impractical! It's really the luck of the draw and depends whether you have a sicky baby or not. My DS wasn't particularly sicky so I could usually keep him in one vest and sleepsuit from one bath to the next (you only need to put clean clothes on them when they actually dirty them at this age, ie sick/poo on them - don't necessarily put them in a new vest every morning for the sake of it, tiny babies don't get dirty apart from the mess they make themselves!). I'd get a 7-pack of vests in newborn and 0-3 sizes for starters (M&S are good) and maybe 6 sleepsuits in each size. DS didn't actually fit in newborn when he was born as he was 8lb 14oz and very long so he went straight into 0-3, but you don't know what you're going to get until they're out and if you have a dinky 6-pounder he/she will be swamped in 0-3 initially. On top of that, you need a couple of cardigans to go over the top in cold weather, a hat or two (pack one for hospital as they like to put one on them when they're born) and a snowsuit for outdoors and you're done. Save the cute trousers and t-shirts til they're a bit older!
