Have you considered an osteopath or chiropractor? They can be expensive but people swear by them. If you're near London, the British School of Osteopathy runs a pregnant woman clinic a few days a week for half the price of a normal osteopath as it is final year students doing the treatment (fully supervised by excellent tutors of course)

Depending on what is causing the pain, an NHS physio may, or may not be able to help much - never had much luck with them for the SPD I have from early on.

Are you on any medication? I've got either pleurisy and/or a cracked rib and am in loads of pain. I'm now on codeine at night so I can at least sleep. It doesn't work brilliantly but apparently it doesn't have side effects for the baby.

What is causing your backache? Having a properly fitting bra can help. I know it sounds ridiculous but with DS I had loads of pain, got a good bra and it miraculously went away.

If you have a back problem the anaesthetist will want to look if there are any restrictions or 'better' ways to give you pain relief (ie epidural) in labour

I was referred to one at my booking in appt due to historic back issues so if you have been given a referral due to your current back pain I would imagine it would be for the same reason

I am on Codeine camdancer but for IBS, its ok through preg but apparently can lead to it having withdrawal symptoms when its born so they advise you stop taking it towards the end. thats something you would have to discuss with your doc tho.

I have to see the anaesthetist as well in a couple of weeks to discuss pain relief etc...I assume in my case its because of my bmi as everything else is. Seeing as I have had epidurals before no problems I don't see why I have to really but there you go.

I know epidurals can cause back pain so perhaps thats why they want to discuss all options?
