Measuring 1-2 weeks ahead at 24 week antenatal check-up?

Hi

I had my 24 week antenatal check up today with my gp. She said that I am measuring a little large for my weeks and wants to keep an eye on things. I have to go back in 2 weeks for another measure, and if I'm still coming up big, then she will refer me for a scan.

It's my first baby and I am little concerned. Has anyone else had similar in their pregnancies?? Does this mean I could be having a big baby? I was 9lb 3 when I was born! I am 5'4' and quite petite.

Thanks ladies..

no doesnt mean your having a big baby, it could be caused by a number of reasons, and the fundal measurments are not reliable at all. from my last fundal measurments, my little boy was gonna weigh 8 n half pounds at term, but he was actually born at 42weeks weighing 6ib 7oz.
im suprised there actually measuring you at 24 weeks, must be different to where i live as i dont start getting measured till im 28 weeks (26 weeks now)
dont worry too much about it :)

Am 21wks pregnant with my second. At 18wks I saw a MW (different from my usual MW) and she mentioned that I felt much bigger than 18wks and thought I was closer to 22-24wks! She didn't actually measure me, but was shocked at how high my uterus was. I had my anomaly scan just over a week later at 19+3 and everything was fine with baby, no excess fluid or anything else to worry about.

I think I was measured from 25wks with DD, but I was also closely monitored for IUGR with her as I had PIH and PE.

I wouldn't worry too much and as beckie90 said, fundal height measurement isn't the most accurate way of determining baby's size, hopefully the scan will reassure you that all is OK

Thanks all. Obvouisly, I had my 20 week scan last month and the sonographer was happy, saying that the baby was an average size for gestation. Hopefully, it's nothing to worry about. Ta!

Hi Leila
I measured 27cm at 25 weeks so was a little over too - my widwife didn't seem that bothered but said we'd see what it measures at my 28 week appointment.

The babies measurements were almost perfect for dates at the 20 week scan so no indication of a large baby then.

If you are officially considered to be 'large for dates' I think they will investigate further and might scan you again. It can be caused if you've got a bigger baby (which is potentially caused by GD), or excess fluid but I think it's usually if you're more than 3cm larger than for dates.

However, fundal height is notoriously unreliable and really only a guide so don't worry about it! For me, I was feeling really big and stretched that day, whereas now a couple of weeks later I don't feel so big and stretched so perhaps baby was just having a growth spurt?

Hi Lucieloo,
Just out of interest did your measurements even out at you next mw appointment/scan?

Or do you not know yet?

Ta!

They started measuring me at 22 weeks and so far have been on track, although I was 26 2 days before my 26th week lol. they can't be 100% accurate. With my youngest DS I was sent for a scan because the temp midwife said I was measuring far too big for my dates and he was going to be huge. Well he was normal when I went although they did say he was going to be on the bigger side, but I was induced 2 weeks early because he was transverse and he was only 7lb1. If he had been allowed to go another 2 weeks I don't class 8lb 1 as huge! Then they turned round and said well its a good size to me....no a good size to me means on average about 8lb or like the heaviest one, over 9lb lol.

I'd only be concerned if you were measuring small TBH. I was measuring big and had a growth scan at 35 weeks which showed DD was actually normal size and I apparently had lots of (but not too much) water. I don't know what happened to the water because there wasn't much when I gave birth Hmm and DD was 6lb 14oz at exactly 40 weeks.

Hi Leila I don't know yet.. (I'm 27 weeks now) got my next mw appointment next week so I'll let you know what happens!

saoirse86 I remember my smallest was exactly the same weight as yours at 6lb 14, they had me in for a scan as well as they said he was too small and thought he had stopped growing but he was ok too.

I think sometimes they forget that babies don't know about birth charts and scales until they come out and think they will all come out the sizes they should because so many other 100 babies came out that size Confused

I was measuring 33 weeks at 31 weeks. And then at my 33 week appointment, i was still measuring 33 weeks and was sent for a trace on baby's heartbeat and movements (all fine) and then a growth scan. Scan estimated that baby is slightly longer than average and weighs 6lbs 1oz - so i needn't have spent a whole weekend worrying and fretting!
