What can this tightening be?

It's too early for braxton hicks, according to my book, but I'd prefer to ask real mums than take the word of 1 book.

I'm 29 weeks on Thursday. Had real tightening of the bump which made it feel like I couldn't stand up straight. Sort of gone now but not, still feels a bit tight down one side. Is it that the baby has just moved into an odd position maybe, is that more likey than braxton hicks?

I never had a BH with Lottie so not sure what they feel like.

Thombat - I definitely had BH with ds2 and ds3 this early. Had them all the way to the end too.

moondog · 03/10/2005 22:05

Sure it's BH.Had loads from your time on.
(Wonder why you never had any before..interesting...)

Gobbledispook · 03/10/2005 22:06

Oh, and my BH were like very strong tightenings - enough to cause discomfort and make me rub my tummy but not agony iyswim.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 03/10/2005 22:06

sounds like BH hun.... i never had them with Jess but had them from about 28-30 weeks this time x

shhhh · 03/10/2005 22:10

Sounds like bh's to me as well. I have them with dd from around 24ish weeks.
When I had them I felt as though dd was curling up into a ball in my tummy...Ifound it hard to breathe & was sometimes in tears with them...
Don't believe people who say they don't hurt, in my case they did & were uncomfortable!
Hope all goes well with the rest of the pregnancy.

TC, I had a Braxton Hicks when I was 18 weeks pg (posted on here about it somewhere) and have been getting them on and off since (more lately) - got the same with DS too though (and he was 10 days late, so don't necessarily either worry or get your hopes up for an early baby!) - I know some women don't get them at all and some only on second and subsequent pregnancies.

ThomBat · 03/10/2005 22:14

Oh cool, nice to hear you had them early too, iykwim, not nice for you but nice to know I'm "normal" then! Yeah, not agony but v uncomfortable and deffo had to rub stomach and bend over & use work top as support. But it was more down to 'ohhh what the hell is happening'. I deffo didn't have this in my last pregnancy though. I always wanted to know what they were like and great (!) now i know! Shit aren't they

Ah, now I quite like the sensation - mine don't hurt though!

spidermama · 03/10/2005 22:15

I had this too. These tightenings seemed to get earlier with every pregnancy for me. I grew to love them because it's almost like the womb doing its own work out without you having to do a thing. Limbering up, as it were, for the big day.

mears · 03/10/2005 22:17

BH actually start from 16 weeks Thombat so what you are feeling is totally normal. I am amazed you are so far into your pregnancy already

ThomBat · 03/10/2005 22:19

okay, I'll grow to love them. Just wasn't expecting it them while trying to sort Lotties lunch box out for tomorrow ! Okay, so BH are my friends, we like BH's, lovely, super, great.

MS!! She is so irritating and such a mercenary! Is there anything vaguely baby related that she hasn't endorsed?!
As my m/w pointed out,she isn't even a paediatrician!

Grrrrrrrr!

midwifeandmumof2 · 03/10/2005 22:38

Hi!

Yes, braxton hicks can begin from 16 weeks +
Only if they become regular/ and increasingly painful, you then need to become concerned.

Hope that helps!

spidermama · 04/10/2005 20:56

I can't abide Stoppard either. Thinks she knows it all. Well she dosen't.

Nemo666 · 04/10/2005 20:59

TB not too early for BH at all. They can occur from 20wks ish with second babies. I have had them on and off for past 4/5wks and am 30wks on fri

princesspeahead · 04/10/2005 21:05

I love my miriam stoppard book, bought in 1997 so the edition before last. It is full of photos of terrible looking women in sensible shoes and baby blue dungarees (or in my particularly fave photo, an all-in-one floral jumpsuit ). It is SO hideous that it is, in fact, retro-fabulous...!!!

Thomcat I'm getting them too and I'm 24 weeks...

moondog · 05/10/2005 21:12

Oh I know exactly which picture you mean-!!!
(Mind you,looks bloody comfy......)

bebejam · 06/10/2005 19:23

With BH contractions do you get pains around your tummy and back pains with the tightening?

I'm 33+6, and was having weird, almost period like pains with tightening earlier today...they kind of come and go, but haven't gotten worse. I assume it is BH??

99redballoons · 06/10/2005 21:36

bebejam, I don't get period type pains with my BH's which is why I know they're BH's iyswim! Keep an eye on things.. like midwifeandmumof2 says, if they start to become regular then you might want them to be checked out. Time them. HTH and all is ok.
