Can you ask to be induced

I'm due on 4th December and although I'd really like to do the whole birth thing naturally I have a small problem.

It is my sister birthday on the 7th Dec and I also have an exam on this day. Sods law has taught me that no matter what I do because I have plans for the 7th this is the day the baby will come.

A friend suggested I ask my mw about being induced on my due date to avoid this situation.

Has anyone ever done this?

I think you would have to fight hard to get the doctors to agree to this. They sometimes do it if the father is going away with the army after a certain date or something but induction has risks associated with it so they don't do it lightly.

There is no way you would be able to do your exam on the 7th if they started an induction on the 4th - can take days to get going and then you would have a new baby to look after.

Maybe he or she will come conveiniently late or early for you - fingers crossed.

Can't see the docs agreeing to inducing you for those reasons!

Can't you change the date of the exam, should the baby come just before or on that day? Obviously if baby comes after that, then all is well.

sweetheart · 03/10/2005 21:30

the exam is set by the exam board so there is no way I can change it. The only thing that will keep me out the exam hall is if I am actually pushing the baby out. I would go even if I was having contractions if I thought I could make it through.

you can ask, they can only say yes or no. explain the situation with the exam. its not like you are asking to be induced early.

ScreamEagle · 03/10/2005 21:35

Say they agreed to induce on your due date. Do you think you could cope with sitting the exam on the 7th having given birth only a few days before? Would you be able to get someone to look after baby for a couple of hours?

Busyalexsmummy · 03/10/2005 21:35

I dont think they will agree, you could ask your m/w if you can have a sweep on your due date though, this is what im doing this time and she agreed

moondog · 03/10/2005 21:40

I think they would if you were insistent.
I was going to ask for an induction as dh had three weeks off (works abroad) starting a week before my due date. I was worried the precious three weeks together would be 'wasted'just waiting for the bay to arrive, and the mws and obstetrician agreed to it,although they did point out the risks.

As it happened, baby arrived a week early and dh didn't get home in time, but we did at least have the three weeks together.

What exam are you doing btw?

misdee · 03/10/2005 21:43

i was induced approx 2 weeks early. i had borderline gestional diabetes, and peter was in harefield and the hospital i gave birth in in the weeks upto induction. i asked, they looked at my notes, i gave my reasons for inductions, and we arranged a day that suited us all. I gave Peter the date, he told his doctors, they did all they could to get him out in time for the birth. he was home 2 days before.

I asked to be induced with no.5 due to being scared of having a big baby. Docs eventually agreed to me being induced 2 weeks early which was a huge relief as ds4 was 9lb 4oz even then!

Nemo666 · 03/10/2005 21:50

Sh dont think it is likely they will induce because of that hun. I am asking consultant to be induced but only because of depression and wanting to go back on meds so want to be induced on due date. Also with the spd and ds being 9lb1oz are other reasons and having no childcare at all over xmas due to family situation..even then I have a fight on my hands despite letters from psyhcatrist, cpn, psychologist to back up early induction.

sweetheart · 03/10/2005 22:05

scream - I would be at that exam hall even if I'd had the baby the day before. My dh will sit outside the hall with the baby if needs be. If I'm early stages of labour I will sit the exam and go straight to hospital - I don't want to miss it and have to re-sit.

It is Association of Accounting Technicans exam - Technician level.

I'm going to have a chat with my mw at my nect appt and see what they say. I have a low placenta atm anyway which means I may still need a c-section at 38 weeks.

I don't think they would under those reasons. If you were induced on your due date baby won't nesessarily come on this day. Sometimes induction doesn't take staright away. Freind of mine was induced x3 and baby finally arrived 4 days later after ecs. She wasn't allowed to leave the hospital after being induced. Also I know there was no way she was able to leave the hospital after baby was born, she couldn't walk about and wasn't discharged until 7 days later. Induction isn't always the way forward...

You need to relax and think positive. My DD came the day after my due date & I was home within 2 days. You never know baby may be excited to meet you

piglit · 04/10/2005 13:50

If they'd agree you might want to ask to be induced a bit before your due date. I was induced on a Sunday but db only arrived on the Tuesday night by emergency section. There's no way I could have done anything after that, let alone sit an exam!

steph1974 · 05/10/2005 14:29

I was induced with my second purely because i had a stressful birth with my first and was terrified and visibly stressed, but i had to go over my due date first, they wouldnt induce me early,i was booked in for five days after my due date and thats when i had my son, well the morning after anyway.
