aren't they the same?

spikydahlia · 06/01/2011 19:55

I think they are the same. Muslins are fab, just got to remember where you put them and keep washing them! They turn up all over the place. Smile

sum04 · 06/01/2011 19:57

But whats better to have?

Muslins.

humptydidit · 06/01/2011 20:01

think burp cloth is the same idea as a muslin but smaller??
Muslins = essential for babies and beyond and must be bought in large quantities ime you can never have too many!!

sh77 · 06/01/2011 20:14

My SIL said muslins were a waste of time and over priced. She said flannels (69p each) were much better.

Eddas · 06/01/2011 20:16

Which one you have probably depends on the baby. mine were both sicky and burp cloths were far too small but for some babies they are probably fine.

I didn't buy burp cloths when I had dd and for some reason when I was pg with no2 I decided to buy some Hmm I should've known he would be sicky too and they were pretty useless

Starisonthetree · 06/01/2011 20:16

You are unlikely to get these second hand, they are so useful for everything.
We called muslins posset catchers as I kept getting the name mixed up with a faith!

Panzee · 06/01/2011 20:17

Flannels are smaller though. I prefer a nice big muslin.

ChunkyPickle · 06/01/2011 20:25

I like the 50p(ish) cheap, white ikea hand towels - bigger than a flannel, and more absorbant than a muslin/burp cloth.

I must have 20 of them, and still I'll go to the cupboard and discover I'm out!

EvilTwinsAteRudolph · 06/01/2011 20:26

Muslins, without a doubt. Loads of them. cheaper than a 69p flannel We used them for well over 2 years, and now my girls use them to wrap up their dollies, and for dressing up in wedding veils. And I use them to remove cleanser.

spikydahlia · 06/01/2011 20:32

muslins are big enough to tuck in around the mattress of a MB to catch sicky dribbles, can be used as sun shades over car seats, tied as bibs, are super absorbant and can even be used for sieving pips out of jamn if really well boiled!!!

MuffinMouse · 06/01/2011 20:58

I bought dozens of muslins and a few burp cloths. I found the burp cloths more useful. But DC1 and DC2 only posseted and lots of actual vomit was never a problem. Also posset does smell and a muslin with a little posset on it still needs washing asap. I would have rather washed the same number of smaller burp cloths.

But the others are right about their multi purpose value. This time I have decided to buy more burp cloths and a few muslins.

DD is a sicky baby and muslins have definitely been my friend.

Used them for wiping up spills, as bibs, as an emergency floor cover under the highchair, as a sunshade on the pram and they are also great as a facial exfoliator for you!

DD is now 1 and we still use them daily

CaptainNancy · 06/01/2011 22:06

burp cloths are so much softer on sensitive newborn skin! (made of jersey)

I always used burpcloths for mine as babies... use muslins now for toddler as bib/napkins.

CupcakesHay · 06/01/2011 22:13

My MIL bought me both - currently 36 weeks pg so haven't tried. Muslins seem thinner and are square - burp cloths are longer, thicker and softer - kind of fleecey.... - but quite frankly - they're just for wiping up a bit of sick - so can't see difference between either much? Unless I have a sickly baby and then I spose the burp cloths will be more absorabant.

Highlandgirl · 06/01/2011 22:18

How many muslins does 'one' need?????

CupcakesHay · 06/01/2011 23:28

If my MIL is anything to go by it's about 2 a day - i have about 20 and 20 a friend gave me (which MIL knew about!) and about 10 burp cloths!!!!

Don't get me started on how many clothes a tiny baby needs - seriously i have enough for 5 a day for 2 months without the need for washing! pain in the arse excited grandma I think!

eaglewings · 07/01/2011 19:49

I used the muslin for everything, carried about 5 in my bag.
I'd put one under my babies head if putting them down somewhere - change mat when out, friend's sofa etc
The are so easy to wash and dry, still in use today for when the kids feel sick, for mopping up etc. You can't have too many

jimmijam · 07/01/2011 20:06

hello, i havent read teh posts on here yet, but wanted to add that for our 1st 2 dcs we used muslin cloths (prob had a supply of about 8 + cheapy ones from boots). put over your shoulder for burping, mopping up sick, wiping up dribble, catching the drips from a bottle, and very importantly- covering your chest from others while breastfeeding

mamasunshine · 07/01/2011 20:33

Get both, the muslins are great as they're bigger - esp if sicky baby. But the burp cloths are so soft and nice to rest their faces on when winding them Smile
