Hi - just found out I'm pg, unexpectedly. I have heard that I dont need to contact my gp and can just call the community midwives. I had a homebirth with ds and I'd like another with this one if possible. I've searched for the community midwife number but I can't find it so wondering if what I've heard is right or should I make an appt with GP?

thanks

Yes you can.

Your GP surgery will have the correct number for community midwives or the health authority. You can always just call the local maternity unit receptionist instead though, they will give you the right number.

Yes - you can go straight to midwife

I did exactly this a couple of weeks ago.

BertieBasset · 06/01/2011 10:52

Yep I did this - although had to book through surgery.

My midwife told me you can also ask for a referral from a pharmacist.

I couldn't see the point of going to a GP who told me all the wrong info last time (was a locum) and didn't confirm the test.

I went to my gp when I found out I was pg and they basically told me that I was wasting their time as they no longer deal with pg woman and that I should of made the appointment with the mw's instead. Angry

So yes I think you can I think it's even what's expected now.

YES!

Made a gp apt and he was useless.

waited an hour and a half for him to give me a midwife number,

ask me if i was taking folic acid, then explained no point getting it on prescription go buy it in a shop and then i was on my way,

now i have to wait another 2 1/2 weeks to see a midwife :(

Yes.

I don't think there's any point seeing a GP unless you have a medical reason that is related to the pregnancy or have specific questions that need addressing sooner rather than later. There's not much a GP can do is there? They don't confirm tests as hpts are just fine and a prescription for folic acid would be more expensive than the 99p they cost in a shop.

I am pg with DC2 and when I rang the surgery to see if I should make a mw or gp appointment, was told that gps like to see us first at my surgery.

So I went along and totally wasted everyone's time. Everything he told me I knew already. Fair enough with first-time mums, but I only gave birth 17 months ago.

If when I get pregnant again, I fully intend to do this. My female gp was crap the last 2 times. Would measure my bump, take blood pressure and chuck me out. I never got to ask any questions, or have my fears dispelled, and I never got to hear my babies heartbeats. When I got to parentcraft classes at 32 weeks, the midwife was shocked, and got the Doppler out straight away. It's midwives for me all the way next time.
