Does this sound like the beginning of miscarriage?

I'm currently 5+4 ... Been taking hpts every day and the line getting darker and darker so I know hormone levels increasing.

Yesterday when I went to the loo there was bright red blood when I wiped. I put a pad on, but it has been clean ever since. When I wipe though, there is dark blood and some small clots.

Feeling very sick today though and still have sore boobs etc.

Please can I have some opinions? Does this sound like the start of a miscarriage?

Thanks.

Have you taken a test this morning?

My last two pregnancies started exactly the same, bleeding, brown spotting etc, still feeling sick and sore - basically a nightmare of worry for a long time.

My first I sadly miscarried, my second resulted in my beautiful baby girl who is now 10 weeks old Smile

I can't say what's happening or give false hope, just wanted to say all is very much not lost. A test still showing a strong line is a good indicator. Good luck.

Taken test this morning and still very strong positive, hopefully that's a good sign.

Thank you for your advice and congratulations on your little girl.

I had bright red blood in my pg with dd. It turned out to be a subchorionic haematoma and she was/is fine. She was born early but that was nothing to do with the bleeding. Fingers crossed for you x

I've also had the kind of bleeding you describe early in pregnancy - first time it was nothing to worry about and dd was the outcome; second time it was a miscarriage at 6wks. Both times I had strong positive pregnancy tests throughout (until some weeks after the miscarriage ended in the latter case). I had the miscarriage confirmed by hospital blood tests and a scan because not knowing one way or the other was a bit wretched.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks everyone!

The bleeding had stopped now, that's got to be a good sign, right? Still feeling very sick etc and that seems to be getting worse.

I have a mw appointment on Monday, I'll tell them about it then, do you think they will send me to the EPU for an early scan? Will be 6+2 by then.

Thanls again, your best wishes are very kind.

I have had 8 pregnancies, I bled in all of them and in some it was red heavy bleeding like a period. I lost 4 (2 early 20 wks) and have 5 living children (one pg was twins).

In the twin pg the cause was a subchorionic haematoma, mostly brown spotting, I was given a 50% risk of MC but it went away at 14 weeks and they were fine, full term. In my last pg, DS3, I had red period type bleeding till 14 weeks (and again at 20-24 wks) and at the 16, 20, 24 wk scans there was bleeding in and outside the sac but he is fine, full term again. I spent several nights in hospital with bleeding, however I was on blood thinners and high risk.

My hospital scanned me as the bereavement midwife who i was in touch with after my late losses got me in early but usually they make you wait till 8 weeks plus. They say you can't always see a heartbeat but I always could from 5+ weeks even with the twins.

I hope everything is OK and hope you get your scan soon, good luck and take care.

On the negative side, I still had a strong pg test result till over 2 weeks after an early miscarriage and longer after a late so you can't always tell by that. In general with bleeding the risk of MC is up to 50% depending on the level of bleeding, red heavy bleeding and clots are a worrying sign although there is still every hope if it settles as I know myself and as others have said.

I would ring EPU for advice but they may not scan you depending on your hospital (I think they should personally as the waiting is awful).

Mahraih · 06/01/2011 11:26

I had bleeding at 7/8 weeks, and it was a mix of bright red and dark brown.

Had a scan, all was fine. I had to ask for the scan - they give you one if you are bleeding, or at least they did at Kings - as a matter of course. Would suggest you ask them, just in case.

Hope everything is ok! :)

St Georges at Tooting (London) have a walk-in EPU. Are you near London at all?

BorgLady · 08/01/2011 12:54

Nowhere near I'm afraid. I'm only 6 weeks today, will they even bother to offer me a scan? Bleeding was only lasted 24 hours and there wasn't enough to stain a pad.

I am hopeful as I still have pg symptoms, but trying not to think about it. Will let you know what they say at my mw appointment on Monday.

Thanks again.

It doesn't sound like a miscarriage if it stopped after 24 hours, test is still strong and you're feeling sick. I really hope its just a blip and you have a happy healthy pregancy.

ladylush · 09/01/2011 00:58

I still had strong pg symptoms (and +ve hpts) after my missed m/cs. Lots of women have bleeding in pg and it turns out to be fine, but a scan is the only thing that will put your mind at rest. I'd push for one if I were you. At 6 weeks gestation it'll be a vaginal ultrasound which is a bit uncomfortable but not painful. Fingers crossed for you x

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2011 01:02

They will offer you a transvaginal scan if you're post 6 weeks.

It's a worrying time but hpts won't tell you anything. A line can still look strong and convincing for some time after a miscarriage is confirmed.

I know it's difficult and I hope it's all okay for you. I too have bled in pregnancy and had it go both ways so understand your worry.

BorgLady · 10/01/2011 17:07

The mw was totally unconcerned when
I told her and didn't refer me to the epu. Puts my mind at rest in one way, but in another ... Now
I keep thinking about mmc.

She said if it happens again I should call and they will refer me, considering faking it to get a scan. What would you do?

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 10/01/2011 17:11

I wouldn't fake anything. My conscience wouldn't allow it.

Can you pay for a private scan?

CrapBag · 10/01/2011 20:15

Why would you fake it?

If there was something to be concerned about, you would have been referred. The bleeding didn't last long, wasn't much and you had no pain. From what I have read on here, that is pretty common (haven't personally bled in pregnancy).

You shouldn't lie to get things, I think it is awful to do this, particularly when there are people who genuinely need to use the already overstretched services that are available.

banana87 · 10/01/2011 21:13

Um, stop being a crapbag crapbag. Any bleeding in pregnancy, no matter what stage, can cause panic, esp in women with a history of mc. WE do not know if OP has history so why not say nothing at all before attempting to patronize her?

OP: If you are really concerned, you can self-refer at some EPU's. St. Georges in Tooting is one I know of.

CrapBag · 11/01/2011 10:03

Surely if she has a history, the MW would have been more concerned.

I don't believe in lying to to get what you want which is the point I was making.

aquavit · 11/01/2011 11:25

I'm with CrapBag, you shouldn't lie about bleeding to get a scan, for your own sake (your medical professionals need to know what's really going on) as well as for obvious ethical reasons.

It does sound as though things are probably fine, and I really hope that they are for you. A small amount of bleeding is very very common in healthy pregnancies.

But if you are really worked up about it, call your midwife: no need to lie to her, just tell her why you're worried. Perhaps she'll be able to put your mind at rest.
