Photo at NHS Growth Scan?

Do you get the chance to buy a photo at a growth scan or is it just a quick look and measure?
I have a consultant appointment as well but not sure if he is doing the scan or the sonographer.

There is the chance to buy one at the 12 week scan at my local hospital, does the letter say anything? Bring some change with you in case anyway, I think they are £4.50 each at my local hospital.

£4.50! I had to pay £8 for mine, you would expect them to be consistent with the prices since it is the NHS. Although, consistency and NHS, probably asking too much.

I'd take £10 in change just in case you can but I wouldn't count on it. It would depend on the hospitals policy, you could always phone ahead and check if you want to know.

a growth scan is in addtion to the regular scans and for a potential issue (baby too small or large for dates)

it isn't a quick look and measure - or mine wasn't - they took various detailed measurements of various organs and bones to see if DD was growing ok

not the time for pictures IMO

I had many NHS scans during my pregnancies, for various reasons, and at all of the ones where they could see the whole baby I was asked if I wanted any pictures. Cost about £2-£4 each, but that was 4-10y ago. I only bought pics at the dating and anomaly scans.

midori1999 · 04/01/2011 15:08

I suspect they will give you pictures if you ask for them.

I have had lots of scans for all sorts of reasons. When I was pregnant with my twins I was scanned at least weekly due to serious complications and they still gave us pictures every time. I have had three scans already this pregnancy and have my fourth on Monday when I'll be 14+1 and have got pictures from all. Our hospital domn't charge as such, just ask for a small donation, although mostly the staff told me not to worry, but we did anyway.

It's not much bother for them to get you a picture, they are very unlikely to mind. After all, all scans are for medical reasons, and they don't mind giving pictures at 12 and 20 weeks, You'll kick yourself if you don't ask!

I got a free one at 6+4 (early scan due to previous ectopic). This photo resulted in the baby being known as Blob...

At my 12 week and 20 week I got one free, and had to pay £3 for any additional photos.

This was in St.Georges, SW London over the last 7 months.

I have a series of growth scans booked and had the first of them a couple of weeks ago. The sonographer was the friendliest one I have had so far (i.e. including 12 and 20 week scans for this and my previous baby). She took her time, told us the gender (at the 20 week scan the sonographer was very quick/dismissive and we didn't get chance to find out), and as we got up to leave handed us 3 pictures of the baby. We hadn't requested these or even expected to get this, it was also the first time we hadn't been charged.

So there is a chance you might get a picture PDR!

Oh and the cost (when you are asked to pay at our hospital is £2).

Envy I'm feeling seriously cheated now... {always the bargain hunter}

SMummyS · 04/01/2011 16:44

I got mine free today, at 7w4d Grin I cant stop looking at it

spaceal · 04/01/2011 16:58

I've had lots of extra scans (offered because we're at high risk for DS) and at every scan we've been given 3 or 4 photos for free! As well as taking a lot of time over the scans (which have all been v reassuring), the consultant has also taken time to get some good photos for us Grin - I think she feels sorry for us Wink

cookingfat · 04/01/2011 17:01

We paid for one at 20 week scan. She was v grumpy and chose the four most random points to snap the pics - 4 blurs. Had to go back for quick check at 24 weeks - lovely sonographer who took loads of really good pics and gave them to us for free Grin.

ruby I have been booked in for a growth scan because my BMI is over the limit but I am measuring correctly, have only gained 1.9kg since booking and there have been no indications of any problems at my other scans so although "medically necessary" I think its more of a formality - I didn't have any extra scans last time because I weighed slightly less.

I will take some change with me then as general consensus is to ask :-) Will be the last picture I think as doubt I'll have another scan (35wks) and thus us my last baby!!!

£5 each at my local hosp in the maternity section...or free if you are being scanned in the FMU!

juliec26 · 04/01/2011 17:59

I had 2 growth scans and have been given FREE pictures at both - had 38 week one today and got a nice profile photo - I didnt even ask - sonographer just gave it to me! guess I am lucky :)

LilRedWG · 04/01/2011 18:05

I've been given a couple of freebies too at my growth scans. They are normally £5 each.

tlise · 04/01/2011 22:37

PDR I have to have a growth scan for the same reason (BMI) (so theoretically I should have a huge baby, but as I also have high bp which could mean I have a smaller baby, then surely I should end up with a normal size :o)and I had to go for a third anomaly scan with a specialist (unco-operative baby) she seemed quite put out I wanted a pic at that one (until then had only had the back of its head and its feet!!!!!) and so did the assistant midwife, but I was told in no uncertain terms, I wouldn't be able to have one at the growth scan. However I think it depends on who you have on the day.

I slso want to know the sex....she told me they wouldn't even look, but seeing as with the last pg I had a growth scan at 36 weeks and they did look for me, will wait and see. Tbh I didn't like her, she said she couldn't tell what it was, but she didn't look as I asked her at the end as baby was sort of co-operating most of the way through and I didn't want to jinx it, but she was professional and thorough and did include DS in it all.
