Grobags are for when they are a bit bigger.

I'd say you need:

Fitted sheets (I needed 4 with my first because she was v sicky, but with my second 2 was enough). If yours turns out this way you might also want to get a second mattress cover so you can wash them frequently.

Something in which to swaddle him/her. I favour the swaddle designs blankets because they are the only ones I have found which are large enough to do a decent job and they are nice and lightweight. Some of those velcro-ish things can be okay, but babies grow out of them quite fast IME.

A cotton cellular blanket or two.

If your baby is due in winter and your house can be chilly perhaps one slightly heavier cotton blanket.

Congratulations. Smile

If you still have the reciept, take it back. You'll be lucky to get 2 months use from it. See if you can exchange it for a crib, much roomier and longer lasting.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2011 17:29

Oh BooBoo, don't rain on the OP's picnic! She sounded very excited with her Moses basket. (Good point, though....)

BooBooGlass · 02/01/2011 17:30

O no no, not trying to rain on anyones parade, just sharing the (very expensive) wisdom that comes after 2 children and much money wasted Grin

SlightlyTubbyHali · 02/01/2011 17:32

Not necessarily, OP. My two were in the moses basket until 5 months, when they went into the cot.

Some of us have obligingly compact babies Grin.

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2011 17:41

Actually, BooBoo, now that I think back, we had to use a Moses basket because our teeny tiny cottage bedroom was too small for a cot. We borrowed one, though. Grin

We used grobags from pretty early on, as ds1 was a kicker and could shrug off the tightest swaddle. But if you use one on tiny babes make sure it's small enough that they can't slide down into it.

OP, it's such fun shopping for new baby stuff, but do track down a local NCT sale to save yourself lots of money. Good luck.

Thanks all, I'm much clearer now!
I'm due in 12 weeks so trying to get sorted before vat kicks in and pay checks stop!
I wanted a moses rather than crib / cost as we live in a 3 storey house so the idea being he/she can kip wherever saving endless runs up and down stairs, then when they're to big they can go into a cot in their own room (hoping for nice & healthy but neat baby who can make use of basket for a good few months, all my friends are scaring me with 10 pounders at the mo...!)
Not bought much at all, really lucky that one of last out of friends to have kids so been given lots of millitant advice about what not to buy Grin, and also first baby in family for yonks so my parents have been really generous & bought us the buggy
I've joined nct but no sales here for a bit and im not sure about attempting my first at 8.5 mths preg Hmm

I have always had a moses basket, its easier for carrying round the house than a crib. DS2 was only in it 6 weeks, altho the other 4 were in for about 3 months. Does help if you can borrow one, but nobody seems to have one when you need it.

I always make sure I have a few spare top sheets, then I fold one in half and put it under baby's head. Mine are usually sicky, that way, unless there is loads, you just need to change that and not the bottom sheet. Much easier in the middle of the night. Old pillowcases do the same thing for if you run out of sheets. In fact, if you run out of sheets, pillowcases make good fitted sheets as well over the mattress....told you mine are usually sicky, the things you learn lol..

Sorry to hijack here but I'm 29 weeks with my first and a bit confused about baby's sleeping arrangements!

Have cot and thinking about moses basket but not sure what blankets and sheets I will need. Baby due in April. Am I right in thinking I will need a fitted sheet for the mattress and then I should swaddle baby then cellular blanket over the top?

I am hoping to get all bedding I will need with the moses basket (generous gift from great grand parents).

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks x

lowra I usually have couple fitted ones, and then a couple top ones as above, but then a couple cellular blankets. Depending on time of year and how warm your house is :)
