Is it possible to just 'know' you're pregnant way before a period is due?

Just musing really. I had lunch with my great friend today who confided in me that she think she is pregnant even though her period is almost a week away. She said she just had an overwhelming feeling, whch she hasn't had in the year and a bit they've been ttc. I really hope it's their month :)
I remember certainly with my second having a feeling, but I don't know why really. I have another friend who swears she felt implantation. So is it just wishful thinking or nonsense? And would it really be possible to tell so early?? I'm awaiting an excited phonecall in 2 weeks time Wink

Yes, I just know - at around 6-8 days past ovulation, round about the time implantation happens. Not "know" based on nothing or just a feeling, but "know" based on feeling a particular way that I only feel in the first few weeks of a pregnancy. Plus a different kind of stabby cramp to the normal period cramps. I have only ever felt this way the five times I have been pregnant and not the countless busted cycles or ones where I have not been TTC. I usually get my BFP within 24-48 hours of the sensation coming on, which ties in perfectly with the time taken from implantation to HCG showing up in the urine that a super sensitive test could detect.

Another way I just "know" is around that same time I walk into a shop selling lots of different flavours of crisps. I pick the ones I fancy at that moment and try hard not to overthink it. Busted cycles or not pregnant it's a random mix. Pregnancy cycles I go for the bacon or cheese flavours Wink

I knew because I suddenly had to stop breastfeeding as it became too painful, then I kept being sick. All 3-5 days after conception!

NewYearNewSolo · 03/01/2011 01:56

I did! I had a woo hoo weekend of not leaving the bedroom and on the Thursday I just knew! It is entirely possible IME.

I wasn't consciously aware of my own pg (although with hindsight, I said/did a few things that were HUGE indicators!).

However, and I swear this is true, I guessed a friend's pg before she did.

I'm a scientist, and natural skeptic, but I've done it so many times with people (although not as early as that) that I'm sure there's a pheromone thing going on, but couldn't find any evidence in the journals.

I have done - on three occasions now.

I have a very irregular cycle, too, so wasn't even sure whether I had ovulated on any of the three occasions, but somehow just felt different. Each time I had the feeling about a week before testing positive. I guess that was when it was implanting? So when the hormones would have been starting, but too early to test.

I have had other people guess I was pregnant before I did. There is a guy I worked with who wondered if I was pregnant when he first met me (at the job interview!). BTW he did not mention it until months down the line. Then the 2nd time round he suspected it again before I officially announced it!

Maybe I must reek of pregnant pheremones or something since I did not test the first time until I was 3 weeks late even though I had a long list of symptoms. I just thought I had had a bad cold.

Bogeyface · 03/01/2011 15:46

Definetely. I have had three pregnancies where I knew waaay before I tested. I cant describe the feeling it was just a certainty. I had no physical symptoms at all, it was weird!

BertieBasset · 03/01/2011 15:47

First time not a clue really. Second time I knew about 5 days before period.

I have IBS and that cleared up straight away, as well as feeling full and with tender boobs. I was getting irritated that the tests kept saying neg when I knew I was pregnant! I knew what to look for this time though.

lindsell · 03/01/2011 15:54

I didn't have a clue but dh said he knew within a few days of conceiving as apparently my smell changed and it was unmistakable Hmm

midori1999 · 03/01/2011 16:42

The only time I didn't 'know' was when I had a singleton early M/C. I didn't get my BFP until a week after my period had been due and wasn't sure. Looking back I had no symptoms or anything, which is odd for me.

I had such a feeling I was pregnant this time that I tested a week before my period was due, and got a BFP.

Mmmango · 03/01/2011 16:58

First time round I was so clueless that I had my dating scan at 17w 3d (they guessed, anyway - not totally accurate by that time).

Second time around we were SWI but not counting/ charting/ whatever, and I just thought oh, I'm pregnant. Checked dates and period not due for another week, so waited till a couple of days after that (too cheap poor to do multiple tests, and anyway I already knew so no rush). BFP.

NoahAndTheWhale · 03/01/2011 17:16

I "knew" with both pregnancies. And didn't have any false "knowing". Agree probably bunkum but is my only bit of intuition that seems to work.

IAmReallyFabNow · 03/01/2011 17:19

What I found weird was the day dh and I had sex I had what I thought was an inplantation bleed and exactly 9 months later dd was born. 6 days later going by dates. Can't test the theory with my other children as one was an emergency section and the other is too long to go in to.

toddlerama · 03/01/2011 17:20

I started puking 2 days after conception with DD1. DD2 the puking didn't start until about 1 week before AF, but the first time I felt 'weird' and didn't think it was a bug. Second time I knew even with a neg. test. It is a distinctive reaction to HCG for me.

Impers7 · 09/01/2011 18:07

This is a really interesting thread!

OH and I are ttc our first - this is the first cycle of trying. At the moment I am shamelessly symptom spotting as there's still a week to go before AF is due. I definitely feel different and have some of what I have read are very early symptoms (sore nipples (I never have sore nipples), a full/hot feeling where my uterus is, slight light-headedness this morning and I feel hotter than usual) but deep down I really don't think I am pregnant because we've only SWI once (OH has been working late nights recently!).

I think I am just feeling things because I want to believe that I'm pg but I guess I will know in a week!

melezka · 09/01/2011 18:14

I knew with all 3 conceptions. No symptoms and I knew immediately - a kind of "blossoming" feeling. Disbelieve all you like; I never felt it when I wasn't.

mattingly123 · 30/08/2019 17:18

For the person who said no women can't just know as if she knows everything, you are wrong..I knew with my first because my stomach went rock solid and bloated out, even when I'm due on my period it never goes as hard as it did when I conceived, everybody's body is different..so if you haven't "Just known" maybe you're just not very lucky...if other women say that they just knew then who are you to tell them otherwise, you have no clue what you are talking about and saying it so matter of fact makes you the stupid one I'm afraid Mrs not so no it all

Babyg1995 · 30/08/2019 18:05

I thought I was a good few months ago was totally convinced infact had pains ect then I got the negative result on the test following month I felt nothing and was a few days late and thought I would take a test and hey Ho I was pregnant I'm Now 9 weeks.
I think if your friends been trying for a baby she will have that feeling I was the same but it was the month I didn't feel anything I actually was pregnant .

Harper33 · 30/08/2019 20:27

Both pregnancies I felt like I knew because I just felt like my period was NOT coming and I’m normally 27/28 days regular. Also my boobs felt like lead around the time that AF was due and I don’t normally get symptoms like that.

With this second pregnancy (currently 6 weeks) waaaaaay before AF but after ovulation, I had horrendous heartburn at work that reminded me of the later stages of my first pregnancy.

I think it’s possible to know before a test!
