Will i curse my pregnancy buying things early?

My partner insisted today that we buy the cotbed and other baby bits in the sale, which we just did...
I am only 19 weeks and will have my next scan on the 12th jan and im really worried that by buying things early we will curse my pregnancy.
This is my third, but my first was born 10 1/2 weeks early and i had to have a stich put in with my 2nd, then whilst trying for baby num 3 i had a miscarriage and a molar pregnancy and i now have a stich in place, so obviously i am very nervous.
Am i mad to even think that buying things early will curse it or not?

Of course not. Don't be daft Smile
And sorry about your previous M/Cs

Logically it cannot possibly make any difference.

But it is a tradition with long roots and for good reason.

Buy when you're ready.

Well as I'm pg with dc2 I've got a house crammed full of baby stuff so if there's any truth in it, I'm doomed as is anyone else with more than one child.

It will be fine!

With my first baby I pretty well had everything by the 20 week scan. Mainly because of lack of money we got things when we saw them on offer or were given things.

With my second baby I put a deposit on the pram after my first scan, but were longer getting everything else needed, finishing when I was about 34 weeks pregnant.

Obviously buying things now will make no difference to what happens to your pregnancy, but there are sales on all year round so if it would make you fell better to wait, then do as you'll still be able to pick up bargains later on in your pregnancy.

TrillianAstra · 31/12/2010 20:44

No amount of shopping can affect the health of your pregnancy.

Unless your local mall is at Chernobyl.

Bogeyface · 31/12/2010 20:46

I bought some nappies and bits before my 12 weeks scan (although after my 7 week scan due to previous losses) bcause they were too good a bargain to pass up. I felt exactly as you do now, but logically there is no reason why buying something should jinx the pregnancy.

I am 19 weeks and a bit, so we will be due around the same time as you and bought before todays 20 week scan was...

Steriliser and bottles (cant BF due to medical issues)....(why did I feel the need to defend that?!)
Reusable nappies as my old ones are really past use
Disposable nappies for the first week or so
the free boots/huggies changing bag
some crib sheets and blankets

You and the baby will be fine :)

When are you due? I am due 23 MAy :)

I think its more old wives tales, but that was more regards the pram (puts tin hat on ready for barrage of scorn, but I didn't start that one lol) When you said too early, I thought you would be a few weeks lol. You need to start getting things, so if you are ready to, go for it :) I only haven't uptil now as I wanted to get christmas out the way, and have no where to put anything, plus I am waiting for the HIP grant. But my Neice bought me some little things at 8 weeks :)

Bogeyface you don't, but I know how you feel. My nipples are flat at best, and BF was a disaster with the first, so I stuck to bottles after. I am going to try again, but its doubtful this time as with the increase in size again, they seem to have gone further in. But why are we always made to feel guilty? Not my fault I haven't got the boobs of a page 3 model.

Car seat is a must before the baby as well or you can't take it home. Thats the only time we will use it as we don't have a car :(

I felt the same way really worried about buying anything just incase. But my DH is loving finding all the bargins in the sales at the moment. This is our first one due 28th may, im just so pleased to have a DH who spends evenings researching prams, bottles, intercoms on the internet all night !! so I just sit back and let him buy away :)its making him so pround and he loves telling the family about his latest bargins !! I have now just about come to terms with what will be will be, it won't be affected by who we tell and what we buy.

I'm currently 14 + 6 & have already bought two sets of bodysuits - not before 12 weeks though, I don't feel it makes a difference but then again I'm not overly superstitious. My Sister bought things before all three of her lovely, healthy & happy DC were born.

However, when we buy them - my MIL & FIL will not allow us to store the cotbed, pram .etc in our home as this is believed to be bad luck so they will be stored at Great Grandma's until the little bundle of joy appears. :)

Personal preference really? I wouldn't worry too much.

Mollycat1 · 02/01/2011 16:09

I am 10wks today and did buy some cute baby grows in the Next sale last week bit only becuase they were really cheap. I am not superstitious but still warey of buying bigger things. Saw a great deal on maxi cosi car seat and base yesterday and had to really hold back buying it. Still might. Its only because of the cost that I contemplate buying stuff!!

JuneBuggy · 03/01/2011 12:04

I'm with you Mollycat, I've been so tempted to buy lots in the sale but have held back! Haven't been into Next, I daren't!

Sparklies · 03/01/2011 14:45

I'm 22 weeks with my third and not bought a thing. We don't need any of the essentials which makes it easier. This one is a boy (the other two were girls) so at some point I will break the credit card with boy stuff but not until about 30 weeks maybe later.

Like you I have had previous pregnancy dramas (in fact my second I had a rescue stitch and I have a stitch in for this one too, plus some NT screen positive issues) but the real reason I'm not buying anything is I don't think I could cope with having stuff around if the worst happened.

If you think you can deal with that then it's all good :) Actually buying the stuff will NOT jinx your pregnancy, I promise.. otherwise the human race would have died out not long after shops were invented!!

tlise · 05/01/2011 11:46

when you think about it, how many people actually leave things right to the last minute to get stuff? can you imagine being 9 months pregnant and having to go start searching? And what about those who have nursery's ready for when baby is born? They are already set up before they have given birth. And what if it was a couple of weeks early? You need to have things in at some point.

Hubby started on last night as we were looking at moses baskets, is it a good idea, well its better than leaving it all to 40 weeks and having nothing. I can understand the first 12 weeks but you have to start at some point. And then he said about getting it but not having it in the bedroom.....um....that makes a difference because...??? As it is I want to wait a couple more weeks as I have another scan at 28 weeks, and I want to know what it is, so I can buy accordingly. But its crossed its legs at the other 5 scans so I don't like my chances :(
