Marijuana in pregnancy

Maggie1234 · 29/12/2010 22:20

I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant.

I've been very healthy during my pregnancy - I don't smoke, don't take drugs, have just the odd glass of wine, exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet.

I'm going to a New Year party on the weekend.

All my friends will be drinking, and some will be smoking dope.

I'd love to have a few puffs on a joint. Considering I'll be sober (and that I'm quite a lightweight when it comes to dope) just a couple of drags would be enough. Plus my friends use 'herbal tobacco' so there's no nicotine.

I've skim read a few academic articles about it, but most studies seem to be based on women who smoked marijuana regularly in their pregnancy - which completely doesn't apply to me.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this?

I'd prefer to hear from people in the medical field or who can direct me towards research rather than receive anecdotal reassurance (eg. "my sister smoked dope all the time and her kid is fine") or vague disapproval (eg. "I would never do anything to harm my baby")

Just genuinely curious about this! Thanks :)

you won't find much research on smoking pot in pregnancy, it's something that can't really be done. Same as researching alcohol in pregnancy.

Namechanged for this as I'm sure I'll get flamed horribly - but any way here goes..

I am the biggest stoner I know & I know quite a few stoners. In the circles we move in it's unusual not to smoke weed.

I have smoked dope in all 3 of my pregnancies & my kids are fine. I have restricted my intake heavily when I have been pregnant obviously as I am quite a heavy user.

I found this study which may be helpful to you.

I found that study when I was pregnant but that is about the only thing I could find on the subject.

Anyway I'll stop rambling, I would imagine baby would be fine if you had a couple of tokes tonight. A one off occasion would be very unlikely to make any difference at all.

I thought thesecondcoming was from Manchester and her name was a reference to the (very famous) Stone Roses album.

Surprised a caner hasn't heard of it Wink

I laughed out loud at going round someone's house to judge 90% of the food in their cupboard. Ooooooh, get you!

RobynLou · 31/12/2010 10:23

I smoked a lot as a student/in my early 20s and saw a few friends succumb to hideous paranoia, I would worry about it affecting the development of the baby's brain and making the baby more susceptible to paranoia in later life.

I've had a few glasses of wine (only 1 at a sitting) through my pregnancies, but I don't consider a small glass of red wine to be mind altering in the same way that a couple of drags on a spliff can be.

GotArt- sorry was tired yesterday and didn't see it.

GotArt · 31/12/2010 16:56

kayah sorry for coming off a bit blunt on this side.
There is literature out there. Its just hard to find because so much of it is fabricated and based on fear of the unknown. In Canada we have decriminalized it for a reason.

I wouldn't smoke at a party simply because you really can't trust what someone else has put in it, where/who they got it from and who doesn't have a chest infection. I stopped smoking pot while living in England because the stuff is very different, like I said before, laced with all sorts of chemicals that are proven to be extremely harmful. Many of the approved sprays for food are very harmful.

Some people would judge you for having the occasional glass of wine with dinner, eating cheese, (which I just experienced in a restaurant from a complete stranger), cured meats and sushi. Peppermint tea is a definite no-no during pregnancy and my dental hygienist gave me the what for for drinking coffee and painting my nails while pregnant. Its not as if we who like to imbibe occasionally means we are sitting down to reefer with our tea. A puff means a drag off one. You wouldn't even register as being stoned and after about 20 minutes, wouldn't feel the affects anymore. Its social smoking, not getting ripped like when you where a teenager.

droves · 31/12/2010 17:18

Would you give a baby /young child cannabis ?
No , why not ?

answer honestly .

Probably because you know its not good for them and could damage their developing brain.

An unborn baby is more likely to be damaged as their brain is just begining to develop, op .

Ive know someone who took drugs in pregnancy. Stupid selfish cunt who now wonders why her child has severe adhd.

dont do it , its not worth the risk

Vakant · 31/12/2010 17:23

I think having a couple of tokes would be very unlikely to cause any harm, but personally I wouldn't. I have had the odd glass of wine though, and don't really see it as being any different so certainly wouldn't judge. I think, like most things that are deemed to be bad in pregnancy, it's all about moderation. Obviously if you drink heavily over a sustained period then that will have serious consequences, likewise if you smoke cigarettes or joints heavily. A couple of sips of wine or tokes of a joint? I'm doubtful they'd have any negative effect.

By the way, I've not read anything to say that peppermint tea is a no no. I drink lots of it! And I paint my nails.

RobynLou · 31/12/2010 17:28

peppermint tea a no no?!?! why? I had a cup the other day as it was recommended to me to relieve wind, which I've had a ridiculous amount of throughout this pregnancy Blush

being pg is a pita!

GotArt · 01/01/2011 04:48

Peppermint tea stops breastmilk making. Maternity wards use to encourage mothers to drink it across Europe and NA to get babies on formula between the 60's and 80's. Each country around the world has different items they feel that women should refrain from during pregnancy. In NA and Europe, sushi would be one, but in Japan, no one would bat an eye. Just as an example.

Just because you are ignorant of some information doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

saffy85 · 01/01/2011 08:38

I get the impression that you're not planning to drink? I'm flummoxed tbh that anyone would turn their nose up at one drug (alcohol) which has been researched a fair bit and usually has a list of exactly what's inside the bottle/can in favour for a drug with a teeny tiny bit of research. Never seen a bag of green with the ingredients listed on it. And very rarely is it bagged pure.

I wouldn't do this. I wouldn't put anything in my body while pregnant if I didn't know exactly what was in it. Anyway cannabis fucked up my mind and my DP's so I wouldn't personally want my baby to have any, ever.

RobynLou · 01/01/2011 09:26

well as I'm still bfing DD at 37 weeks pg with DC2 I don't think peppermint tea has had that effect on me!

good to know though, I shan't binge on it!

Alibobster · 01/01/2011 09:38

FFS are you for real? You stupid woman!

Showdown · 01/01/2011 09:42

Maggie - your poor unborn child deserves the greatest chance of being born healthy. You come across as incredibly foolish and selfish.

If anything goes wrong with your pregnancy or with your baby's health - you only have yourself to blame.

Your post is too disgusting for words.

PuraVida · 01/01/2011 09:46

Ackcherly GotArt most uk cannabis is homegrown these days so far less likely to be full of shite.

Irrelevant to the discussion but your superior attitude bugged me

PuraVida · 01/01/2011 09:49

Whoops terrible link talks about it being sprayed with silica. More what I meant was most people now grow their own so lovely and organic Grin.
