Waters have broken at 28 weeks - we're in America!

I've come over to the US for a two week holiday to my partner's family. No problems at all in this pregnancy (my first). Then yesterday morning the waters broke! I've been admitted to a local hospital and although me and baby are fine we'll be here for the duration. It's likely to be three months! Baby could come any time between now and full term so we're keeping everything crossed (including my legs of course) it stays in as long as possible. Either way we're not able to fly home for a looong time...

Our baby will be coming back to the UK an American citizen - how about that? Shock Grin Confused

Pray the insurance works out for us!!

Been following your thread. Oh no how awful.

Is there any charitable organisations in us/uk that can appeal for some funds? You were insuranced but it run out which isn't your fault.

girlsyearapart · 29/01/2011 07:54

Oh. That is not good news..
Hopefully it's not broken only a ' man injury' but still very expensive on the us medical system I imagine.

You're doing so well southsea keep smiling not many sleeps now till you meet that lovely baby.

I'm going to say it's a boy weighing 4lb 2..

Shall we all have a guess to pass the time??

Southsearocks · 29/01/2011 11:39

Broken fib and multiple cracks. I'm too depressed for words. He's got a temporary cast on and has to come back for a proper hard cast. If they recommend surgery I'll probably suggest he just flies home because it will break the bank. 6 to 8 weeks with a cast either way.

Sad

Oh no!!!! You really are going through it!! Well, life throws us these things in hope that they make us stronger!! Hold in there, it'll all be over soon and when you've got little one in your arms, nothing in the world will matter!!! Even if you husband is limping!! Big hugs x x x stay positive x x x

Coppernoddle · 29/01/2011 11:53

I'm sure you've already checked but I don't think you can fly with a cast on!! Think they would have to dress it! I remember my husband breaking his wrist and he was coming towards the end of his cast time and we were flying to America and they wouldn't let him fly so he went into the toilets and ripped it off and we were fine! But they may make exceptions and this was a few years ago so may have changed!
Oh I really do feel for you! Don't stress yourself out too much, these things have habits of working themselves out! Good luck x x x

SoupDragon · 29/01/2011 12:02

Oh god!

I'm sure one day you will look back on this and laugh. one day.

duchesse · 29/01/2011 12:09

Oh god southsea, that was absolutely the last bloody thing you needed. The thing about not flying with a cast is probably to do with swelling- it should be ok with a temporary open cast with a gap at the front. I'm afraid that if he has several breaks he may well need operating on. In the uk they wouldn't operate until the swelling had gone down anyway. I suggest that he emails the orthopaedic dpt at your local hospital in the uk explaining everything ( including needing to stay in the us for the foreseeable future and at least the next few weeks) and see what the recommend he do. Stay strong!

fridakahlo · 29/01/2011 12:29

Naughty DP!

chicaguapa · 29/01/2011 12:38

What a fascinating experience! You really must write a book when you get home and the Pebble is a bit older. Good luck!!

geordieminx · 29/01/2011 14:09

Shit shit shit. This really is the last thing you need. Please try and stay calm and not get upset, as it's not good for you or the pebble and we need he/she to stay put a wee while longer.

I'm sure everything will be ok and will sort itself out.

Will say a wee prayer for you tonight if thats ok?

Southsearocks · 29/01/2011 14:38

Please do Smile. We need all the help we can get! Just spoke to DP and I do feel a bit sorry for him now as he is very lovely and didn't break it on purpose. He's going to come in today despite being in a bit of pain so I can't be mad at him too much.

He was told it should heal nicely and is having the hard cast put on on Monday and there was no mention of surgery, but I know these things can change. With a little bit of luck (and a few prayers) we might be ok. I just can't believe this is happening!

I think once I've seen him I'll feel a lot better and might even get my SOH back. Yes indeed, what a story it will be to tell Pebble!

Thank you so much for your best wishes and company over the last 5 weeks, it's been keeping me going. I owe you all a big G&T (and wouldn't say no to a few myself)
xxx

Oh boy Shock - it never rains..

Seems like you're going to have to upgrade selling your story from Take a Break to one of the National Papers to pay for this now! Wink Or perhaps a book deal!

The irony being that if your situation hadn't occurred, he wouldn't have been in the US for it to happen!

On the plus side, it gives you something else to worry about besides Pebble to pass the time Hmm

mrsgordonfreeman Really? Have we met or do we only know each other online? It wouldn't surprise me, I'm not very "disguised" and my story, like Southsea's, is pretty distinctive!

Jacksmama · 29/01/2011 15:09

Southsea - oh shit. Your poor DP. How are you both holding up today? FWIW, the fibula is not a weight-bearing bone so unless it's dislocated up by the knee, it doesn't usually need operating and will heal nicely. But still - grrrrr!!!
Hugs to you!!

duchesse · 29/01/2011 15:14

Jacks- as I speak my fibula is plated and my ankle is in a cast. Whether or not they operate very much depends on the injury. I had two breaks in the fibula and a ligament rupture on the other side (frequent in this type of injury).

girlfromdownsouth · 29/01/2011 15:31

Southsea that truly sucks! I'm so impressed by the way you two are handling things. After this, everything should be plain sailing once you get home. It's so exciting you will be seeing Pebbles soon. Poor DP and poor you for the stress and worry. But as the others say, what a fascinating story.

Keep us posted.

Cadmum · 29/01/2011 15:47

I am so sorry to read of your dh's accident. That is the last thing in the world that either of you need! Is there any way he could hop a flight to Canada and co e back with a new insurance policy? What if something serious were to happen? (My parents are visiting us in Cambodia with friends who misread their insurance policy and discovered that it expired before their return flight. They crossed the border into Vietnam and returned with a new policy.)

I hope it heals quickly and that you continue to maintain your sanity. Only 9 more days...

duchesse · 29/01/2011 15:54

From PA he could probably drive to Canada, although obviously flying would be faster. I think since he's (and you) going to be spending probably at least another 6-8 weeks in the US he needs to have health insurance. He can probably arrange it online from the US tbh.

duchesse · 29/01/2011 15:58

I fear for you if you are not covered adequately. I just googled and found this. I guestimated your ages as 30 and put up to $1m of cover- for both of you it would be about $400. Presumably though you are covered by your original cover as you are stuck in hospital having already claimed, so it just be DH to cover at about $200.

duchesse · 29/01/2011 16:01

Sorry, forgot to say I put in 2 months cover. Unfortunately it does not seem to cover preexisting conditions, although one covers for small amounts on preexisting conditions.

ilovesprouts · 29/01/2011 16:28

bump

Jacksmama · 29/01/2011 19:16

Duchesse - bugger re your fibula, sorry to hear it!

ozzysocks · 29/01/2011 19:18

Oh shit Shock I am sending lots of hugs and best wishes. Also sending large medicinal G and T xx

Bryher · 29/01/2011 23:13

Oh, poor Southsea and DP, that's awful! :( Depending how much it's going to cost, could we do some sort of fundraising campaign on Mumsnet to help pay for the treatment, rather than him having to fly back to England and leave Southsea there? Any ideas, anyone?

Southsearocks · 30/01/2011 00:51

Ahhhh thanks everyone, and thanks Duchesse for looking into insurance. Sorry to hear about your own poorly ankle!

At the moment DP seems sure that surgery wasn't indicated and he has a chit for a hard cast next week so we'll see how it goes. One of the doctors said you can work out some pretty low payments with the hospital so if it's not going to be too much we'll be ok. DP was in a lot of pain this afternoon Sad

We told my parents and my brother and SIL via Skype and had a laugh about it all. I feel less worried now but still, it's not great is it? DP's SIL took a family photo of me in a wheelchair with my bump and DP with his crutches Grin. That's one for the journal! We're also going to all have matching hospital identity bracelets.

All I want now is to get out of here, lovely though everyone is (and they really are, my goodness!) and get a bit of independance back. So bring on the next week! (with no mishaps please God.....!!)
