Waters have broken at 28 weeks - we're in America!

I've come over to the US for a two week holiday to my partner's family. No problems at all in this pregnancy (my first). Then yesterday morning the waters broke! I've been admitted to a local hospital and although me and baby are fine we'll be here for the duration. It's likely to be three months! Baby could come any time between now and full term so we're keeping everything crossed (including my legs of course) it stays in as long as possible. Either way we're not able to fly home for a looong time...

Our baby will be coming back to the UK an American citizen - how about that? Shock Grin Confused

Pray the insurance works out for us!!

I've only just spotted this thread but I wanted to say how amazing you sound Southsea - so upbeat and cheerful when you must be both bored and worried. Your posts are a treat to read!
Nearly 30 weeks is so so positive. I'll be checking in on you from now on and willing your little one to stay put for a little while longer.
Hope you are having a good day today.

girlsyearapart · 10/01/2011 08:04

Yay for the iPad!
Get words with friends - the free version and once you have it let me know and I'll post my player name.
Glad you had a better sleep

WillbeanChariot · 10/01/2011 08:24

Just checking in southsea, glad you are hanging in there. Almost 30 weeks is fantastic!

Cadmum · 10/01/2011 09:27

I am also just checking on your progress. Great news about the iPad! This is posted from ours which was a Christmas present from the dPil.
I am off to find angry birds and words...

Keep up the great work!

DanceInTheDark · 10/01/2011 11:33

Are you having the iPad delivered to the hospital? Or somewhere else? I would be worried that it would go to another patient! Confused

DirtyMartini · 10/01/2011 12:02

Cadmum, can we swap PIL please Grin?

Cadmum · 10/01/2011 13:09

dirtymartini Yes. (but they have already given away the iPad...)

Jacksmama · 10/01/2011 18:51

Good morning southseas! How are you today and how's the monitoring going?

Southsearocks · 10/01/2011 19:11

30 weeks today!

WorzselMummage - (love your name Smile) I'll have look for your thread, thanks.

I had written a big long spiel and posted it and it got lost, so this is going to be a smaller version. I was saying that DP is here doing his work next to me, which is great because it's keeping me company and he has something to occupy him and he is spending more time talking to me today than he has when he's had no work to do! It's the old distraction thing I'm sure.

I'm intrigued by Angry Birds - it sounds really sinister! I keep checking on Amazon to see if my iPad has been sent yet as I'm so impatient. I am chomping at the bit to have my own means of communication!

I just got called away for a scan while writing. It took quite a long time and the sonographer took a long time looking at the heart. But the doc came in and told us there was 4.4cm fluid now, so a little less but not much, and the good news is the baby's estimated weight is 2lb and 12oz, so within the normal range. That has given me a real boost. The doc thought that the first time they measured it might have been inaccurate because the baby was squished with there being no fluid at all.

So all in all a reasonable result and we're both happy. The baby seems to be managing with not much fluid in there so let's hope it continues to do well Grin

I'm off to have a wee, check Amazon for the 'nth time, and then have to hand back the laptop so will catch up with you tomorrow! X

PS Have just started watching the first series of Mad Men and it's ace.

Long-time lurker here - well done on reaching 30 weeks! That must feel like such a milestone.

And good news from the scan today :)

DirtyMartini · 10/01/2011 19:31

Just thinking ahead to next Christmas, Cadmum Wink

Hurrah for Mini Southsea putting on a bit of beef -- that's great news. And congrats on 30 weeks. A really good milestone.

fannybaws · 10/01/2011 19:56

Hi SouthSea Happy 30weeks!!!
Well we camehome yesterday! The consultant came in yesterday morning and as the latest jaundice result was s much lower he said we could come home with the proviso that if the level went up again, we would have to go back in.
I was surprised but very happy so home we came, the neonatal community nurse came out today and tested his level, it has gone up but not to treatment level so she will come again tomorrow.
He is more yellow today and very sleepy, I am waking him for feeds 3 hrly and pumping and giving breast milk top ups. He get tired easily and feeding takes an hour every three hours but he is soooooo sweet.
Hi The Lennox, yes it was the Southern in Glasgow and they really looked after us so well.
Southsea hope you ipad arrives son and you can get addicted!

Eglu · 10/01/2011 20:39

30 weeks just sounds so fantastic compared to 20 something. I hope your ipad arrives soon. FWIW I hate angry birds cos I'm crap at it. Even though my DN can play it and she is 2. DS1 is 7 and loves it too.

CrispyTheCrisp · 10/01/2011 21:26

Brilliant news on 30 weeks and an ipad AND baby's weight Smile

thelennox · 10/01/2011 21:29

Hi southsea well done on making it to 30 weeks. Glad you are all doing ok and the iPad is a definite must. Much easier to feed and mn at the same time! Just love mine.
Hey fannybaws, so glad you are both home. I thought southern was fab too, they are all so nice. Hope the jaundice keeps in check, mine were all little yellow babies for a while, but sounds like you are doing all the right things. Take care x

soda1234 · 10/01/2011 23:10

Southsea, have been watching your thread, and waiting for you to get to 30 wks, I didn't feel I could comment before now.
My twins were delivered at 31 wks by emcs as I had pre-eclampsia.
They were little 3lbs and 3lbs1oz.Our daughter was ventilated for 48 hrs, but apart from that they were fine and they came home at 5 wks.
13 yrs on they are obviously, the cleverest, most beautiful, most talented children that ever walked the planet!

ChippingIn · 11/01/2011 02:23

Southsea - 30 weeks - brilliant. Baby is a good size and the fluids not too bad!

I'm sure you'll love the Ipad - much more convenient

allyfe · 11/01/2011 04:57

That is great news about both the fluid and weight! And huge congratulations for making it to 30 weeks.

We started watching reason 1 of mad men last night! It was going really well until the damn dvd stopped working!!!???!! So we need to get it changed ASAP!

Jacksmama · 11/01/2011 05:24

Oh lovely news!!! So happy for you!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 11/01/2011 09:33

I am so glad to hear that you are hanging in there, and that there is good news about miniSouthSea's weight. I hope that the ipad turns up soon, to entertain you.

SoupDragon · 11/01/2011 18:07

I'm not sure which is the better news - 30 weeks, size and fluid or iPad... :o

Southsearocks · 11/01/2011 20:33

Hi! Thanks for your lovely messages. It's been an interesting day since I was last able to come on here.

After posting yesterday I had a big leak and promptly lost whatever fluid was in there, I'm sure. And the thing is I've started to feel guilty whenever it leaks out. So every little dribble is an "oh no!". I know there's nothing I can do and I know that the baby is doing ok on very little, but I'm feeling closer and closer to 'mini-Southsea' (Smile) and really like I am responsible for ensuring s/he stays put for as long as possible. So that was one thing.

Then DP called me in the evening from his bro's to say the insurance people had been in contact. I could tell something was wrong by the tone of his voice. Our insurance company have decided that they are not responsible for meeting the post-birth costs and that we have to apply for Medicaid for the baby instead, as the baby will be a US citizen and not British. Thanks a lot DIRECT TRAVEL INSURANCE! We were both having kittens. I went to bed looking up everything I could on it on the Kindle (cos you can surf the net on it although it is very very slow!) and after a bit started to feel less worried and more resigned to the fact we could be paying off a lot of money over a long time, but we would mange. I also realised there's a big hoo-ha over here about foreigners coming to the US to have babies - they call them 'anchor babies' - so that they can claim residency. And it looked to me that because of the 14th Amendment, which sets out the rights to US citizenship for all children born on US soil, babies automatically qualify for support from Medicaid, which is the states provision for emergency care for the under or un-insured.

Now, we don't want to be claiming Medicaid. Our view is that the insurance company should pay for the baby's care since they knew I was pregnant before we came and said nothing about this, even when I emailed them for clarification. But today a lovely lady from the finance department came to see us to fill out some forms and she seemed confident that the baby would qualify and the hospital costs would be covered. So we're feeling less panicky. But blimey, what a stressful 24 hours! And it is an application, not a definate so it's not ovr yet but we're not going to worry too much just yet.

Another thing that has happened is I had an email from mumsnet passing on an email from a journalist (hello if you are reading Smile)) who wants to have a chat about this post! So that's quite exciting. She's based in London so it would be for British publications and my initial thoughts are that if a story is printed about our situation it might at the very least prompt people to take out decent insurance and seriously think about flying abroad while pregnant, so I will be contacting her to find out exactly what's involved before doing anything about it. What do you think?

iPad has been shipped and due to arrive on the 13th! But there are also big snow storms here due to arrive in Philly tonight! Hope it gets through!

Fannybaws - how lovely you are home. It made me feel good to imagine how that must be for you.

It's time to Skype parents and tell them the news too. Take care x

Lovely to hear from you, but sorry to hear about the fluid leak. I remember my friend who spent 6 or 7 weeks playing the same "game" as you (from 26 weeks to 33 I seem to recall) and she would have similar things happen. A nice pocket of fluid would build up again, then.. yuck.

As for the insurance Angry - can't say I am surprised they are trying this as a stunt. They probably try it with everyone in your situation and hope people will just give in. I can tell you now that my insurance, which was through DH's work would have covered my baby had she been born. Unfortunately the maximum payout altogether was $500K which does not go far.. sadly this did play into our escape back to the UK plans a little, which aren't an option for you now. Really hope those insurers get their act together, it's disgusting.

Hmmm - don't suppose either of you have BUPA or anything back home do you? Because often they might cover some stuff for the little one. It was an option we were considering.

Anchor babies are quite interesting in that although they are US citizens, they cannot petition for you to be a US citizen until they are 18. So you'd have no legal right to remain (unless you had visas valid for other reasons of course) even if your child was a US citizen. And then it takes forever due to waiting lists. There's all sorts of other shenanigans about IRS, right to vote and goodness knows what I'm sure you will become familiar with as the years go by!

I actually had a journalist do a story on my American Hospital Adventure, which was supposed to show up in Prima Baby or similar but I'm still waiting!! The story is written and submitted, but that was waaay back in March. Hope yours is a little speedier!

Keep those storms away and hurry up iPad!! Oh, and stay in a bit longer baby Southsea. Incidentally are you actually from Southsea? I lived in and around Portsmouth for about 4 years a decade ago!

WorzselMummage · 11/01/2011 20:58

I had journos sniffing round me too, they even messaged me on facebook! I didn't take any of them up of there offer but we were in the local rag on ds's first birthday :)

I can so relate to you about the guilt re fluid loss. After a lost mine it never really reaccumalayed because of his position.. It's grim isn't it. Please dont feel guilty though, nothing you can do wil make much if a difference, just drink lots and lay in bed!

Having duel nationality would be really cool!
