28 weeks and very breathless

hi all, I'm nearly 28 weeks now with my third and for the past few days have been getting increasingly breathless. It's been terrible today - had it virtually all day and it makes me all fidgety/panicky.
Nothing seems to help (tried different positions etc). I went to see the GP yesterday (mainly about dizzyspells - I have very low blood pressure) and he had a listen to my chest and said everything sounded good. He took a blood sample but said that it didn't look at all anaemic. I do get asthma occasionally but this is not like it at all (plus, I've used my inhaler and it does nothing at all), I'm not wheezy but feel like I just can't expland my lungs enough. HELP!

Hi 2under2, I had a similar experience. No obvious chest infection, low BP and normal HB. The doctor said it was hormonal - they have said this about everything so far! I am now 33 weeks and it has got better although is I exert myself it is difficult to catch my breath. Hope yours settles down, go back to the doctor if it doesn't as it needs to be checked out, if your still working take a couple of days off. That all my advise hope it helps.

spent a lot of my pregnancy felling sob i am slightly aneamic baby was quite high and breech for a while with head stuck under lungs but when it turned it did get better

Well, you sound anaemic! Not sure what a sample looks like that isn't anaemic, but I'd wait for the results....

princesspeahead · 29/08/2003 19:35

you sound anaemic to me (another permanently anaemic low blood pressure fast pulse wimp). look underneath your lower eyelids - are the membranes nice and red or rather pale and washed out? Probably wouldn't do you any harm to start a spoonful of Floradix or something every day while you wait for the results...

This sounds exactly like what I had, from about 28 weeks too. It used to hit me when I was just sitting down or in bed. I would be gasping for breath but would feel as if I just couldn't get any oxygen into my blood, IYSWIM. A couple of times I nearly passed out, it was very scary. Sound the same? I was tested for anaemia and had an ECG and 24 hour heart monitor (I have a benign murmur so they wanted to see if it had worsened due to pregnancy). I'm afraid I can't really help you because the tests were all negative and the doctors couldn't work out what it was. It did get better after I started my maternity leave though. I have had it again recently (not pregnant ATM) and I'm wondering if it is asthma (possibly due to air pollution?). Going to see my GP next week. I'll be interested to see if you get any answers. Lots of sympathy, it sounds horrible and I know I was miserable with it too.

2under2 - how are you? I saw my GP this morning and she thinks I probably do have asthma. I've got a peak flow meter to try and see if we can get a positive diagnosis and a salbutamol inhaler.

I'd still like to know if you find out what the problem is. I know you said you tried your inhaler, but I wondered if maybe a different type of inhaler would help? Asthma can get worse during pregnancy apparently.

I have this too, and I am only at 24 weeks. It is especially bad after I have eaten a meal. I just try to breathe in and out slowly. I don't have asthma, so don't really know what this is.

sorry for not replying before - been away on holiday - the blood test result was fine and it's been a lot better most of the time now. Maybe it's just everything thrown together, positioning, bit of asthma and tiredness. Gingernut, hope you get it sorted out, in my experience asthma does get worse during pregnancy (like you really need it!).
