Tiny baby sizes - waste?

Hi
Just wondered if anyone could tell me whether it worth buying tiny baby sizes eg John Lewis has tiny baby sizing for under 7 lb ? I reckon baby will be around 6 lb. Sis in law said not to bother as they are only useful for about 3 weeks.

I start at newborn but mine ar'e 8lb +

TBH I don't even bother buying new (i get bundles from MN boards and ebay ) because they are in them for so little time!!

FairyTaleOfNewYork · 28/12/2010 14:16

i wouldnt bother.

unless you have a really little one then send someone out to get some for you.

i start at 0-3months as my last 3 have been 9lb+ at birth.

I wouldn't bother either. My DC1 was 7lb 13oz but for some reason seemed really scrawny and we had to get some tiny baby clothes for him. My cousin got a few sleepsuits from Tesco for us. Like Fairytale says, just send someone to fetch them for you if you need them.

With DC2 I packed the tiny baby clothes we had for DC1, Newborn and 0-3. She went straight into 0-3.

Congratulations btw.

well my DS was 6lb 8oz and didn't fit into newborn for ages- he was wearing 'tiny' baby size for quite a few weeks - the outfit we bought him to come home in was a 'newborn' size and was huge on him! Best thing if you can would be to borrow some 'tiny' sizes from someone, or maybe just buy a couple of babygrows/vests for the first few weeks- you may find some on ebay cheaper? it really is hard to know how big your baby will be!

sh77 · 28/12/2010 14:28

Thanks so much everyone for the advice. Will return tiny baby stuff and buy if we need it.

Sounds like a good idea sh77. Smile

My DD was only 5lb 12 and my mum had to pop out for new.stuff as all the "newborn" was massive on her. She was in the tiny stuff for a good few weeks.

MumNWLondon · 28/12/2010 15:05

Mine have all been between 7-8 lbs.

The 0-3 stuff particularly from M&S was massive and fitted up to around 4.5 months (around 14lbs). The up to 1 month stuff from M&S was just right at the start and we used it for around 6 weeks, until around 5kg.

I have a box of babygros & vests that we pass around our family, so wouldn't buy anything new smaller than 0-3.

I wouldn't buy it, wait to see if you need it, worst case baby comes home from hospital in a too big babygro. You can always send someone out to buy if you need.

changeforthebetter · 28/12/2010 15:11

Unless you are expecting a teeny baby I wouldn't bother.

DD was wee 5lb 8oz. The newborn stuff drowned her so I sent someone out for tiny baby stuff. It was nice as the vests were wrapover so easier to manage dressing someone that small. She was in it for ages - at least a month. She is still little bless her but has grown a great big attitude to compensate for it Hmm. Her little sister was always too porky to fit into the tiny baby stuff even on the first day of life. She got the attitude too Grin

gallicgirl · 28/12/2010 15:14

You'll probably find different brands fit better than some. I remember with my niece that newborn in mothercare sleepsuits for example was huge, but newborn in Asda sleepsuits were just fine.

I've bought a few tiny baby and a few newborn sizes from different shops and we'll just see what fits when baby arrives. I certainly haven't spent a lot though.

It depends not only on the weight but the shape of the baby. DD was very long and thin, and could still fit into tiny baby at 3 months, even though by her weight she shouldn't have. At 13 months, she's still comfortably in 3-6months. So I'd agree with the others, wait and see before you commit to any particular size...

WillbeanChariot · 28/12/2010 19:12

I didn't bother and just bought 0-3, but DS took us by surprise and I ended up ordering 1-2lb clothes of the internet. That was extreme though! I agree wait and see. We got some lovely tiny stuff from Tesco when DS was big enough for it.

JuneBugJr · 28/12/2010 20:30

Maybe see how big you are at the end to have some sort of idea. I wouldn't buy the tiny sizes though, get newborn sizes if you think baby will be small.

We took in newborn babygros for DD, thinking that as I'm small she would be small. And ended up having to cut the feet off them until someone brought in bigger ones. Better to be too big than too small.

sh77 · 28/12/2010 22:01

Thank you to the recent posters.

Changeforthebetter- your description of your babies had me in stitches. So no correlation between weight and attitude!

lunatic - hope you are keeping well and that the last few weeks pass peacefully for you. Feels ever so strange shopping second time around.

Exchanged all my tiny stuff today! I am expecting a long and skinny baby with a small head if my measurements are to be believed. Will get DH familiarised with sizing before the big day.

All the best x

Definitely not tiny baby John Lewis. If baby turns out tiny, you can get some urgent ones in Mothercare of Tesco's!

breatheslowly · 28/12/2010 22:04

I agree that it depends on the shape of your baby - DD was long and thin and didn't fit newborn as they were too short. One of the best things we had were "baby bundlers" which are like night dresses with elastic around the bottom. They make it easy to change your baby as there aren't any poppers and the size doesn't matter too much (just roll back the sleeves if necessary). You also probably know lots of people who could lend you barely used newborn clothes until you work out what sizes to buy.

AlpinePony · 29/12/2010 08:18

I was told my boy was going to be massive - so we bought all 0-3 months. As it turned out, he was a month early and a tiny 5lbs 11oz. I cried because everything we had drowned him and even the newborn stuff was big. My boyfriend shopped for more and a kind friend donated some preemie stuff. You just don't know what you're going to get. :)
