I went for my jab today and I'm 10 weeks 3 days but after reading the leaflet with it the nurse decided in agreement with my midwife and a gp that I shouldn't have the jab in the first trimester anyone else been told this?

I had just been in to see my midwife so luckily she was there but now I'm panicking as the news has it all over it and keeps saying pregnant women must have it but no mention of which trimester

I had swine flu when I was pregnant with DD, I was absolutly fine, took me a little longer than DH and the DC to feel properly better but had no lasting effects and DD was born fit and well.

when i went to the midwife on thursday she told me it was up to me whether i had the jab or not and wasnt at all fussed or pushy about me having it. im 7 months preg tomorow and at my parents over xmas for 3 weeks so wont be able to get to my gp til after the new year.
does this mean the medias making a big fuss out of nothing or should my midwife have been a bit less....flippant?
didnt have time to get the jab before i left for my parents so should i be worrying?

JimmyChoo17 · 23/12/2010 18:42

Well news is saying that they are urging pregnant women to have it

There is no mention of which trimester.

I would rather I had it than not and talking to a nurse of another drs, she has said they are giving it regardless of trimester

For the lady above I would say she was very flippant as it's def being recommended at your stage of pregnancy.

I am flying next week so will be exposed to more germs and aviation certainly doesn't help.

So confused and now worried

Read the live webchat that was on mumsnet earlier in the week.

Prof Salisbury said it was suitable for any stage of pregnancy. There are 10 brands of the vaccine apparently, and only one (fluvirin?) contains traces of mercury, so you might want to avoid that one. He said not to wait though as we are right in the middle of flu season.

Darnsarfupnorf that's how my midwife was and the gp's when i was asked if i wanted it. I'm now almost 31 weeks and wondering if i made a mistake not to have it. Might phone surgery tomorrow and see if there is any chance of having it still or they have run out. Feel lik e i might have acold coming on now as throat is getting a little sore. Am usually quite healthy and seem to have a reasonable immune system as i work in a school and so far seem to have avoided a sickness bug and some throat infection. But i know the flu isn't so choosey. Will phone tomorrow and see what they say. Though am also concerned that the media is getting in a frenzy about it and i don't actually know anyone who had swine flu last year

naturalbaby · 23/12/2010 19:41

i'm 35weeks and had it yesterday. none of the midwives i've seen have mentioned it but i had a check up with gp cause i've had a chesty cough for over 3weeks and symptoms got worse, and he said i should have it. my sister is a doctor and was concerned i'd waited so long to have it. sorry it doesn't help much if you're 1st trimester. i probably would have gone without except the gp recommended it, and feel so rotten with this cough/cold i can't deal with anything more/worse.

Thanks, Where are the web chats?

The type they had was for swine flu, Brisbane flu and another one I can't recall

I had mine on Tuesday at 10 weeks and the nurse said I was right to have it as there is a pregnant lady in our local hospital who is in intensive care with flu. I'm not fearful of vaccinations and am much more frightened of catching the flu, which is proven to be dangerous (unlike the jab), but everyone has their own opinion on this topic, that's for sure. Good luck.

DomesticGoddess31 · 23/12/2010 19:52

I'm 10 weeks pg and i had the jab on Tuesday. From what I've read, the advice is to have the jab whatever stage of pg you are in. I panicked a bit afterwards wondering if I should have not had it so early on but if you read the web chat with prof salisbury on here he said the vaccine is inactivated so you don't actually get the virus, just the antibodies.

Apart from a slightly sore arm I've had no adverse symptoms whatsoever.

CuppaTeaJanice · 23/12/2010 20:02

Webchat

Thanks Supersunny - didn't quite get the answer I was looking for but I guess if he thinks the jab's safe in pregnancy then to him there's no need to have it in advance. I had mine today btw - the first time I've ever been 'grateful' for having asthma!!

jamieoliverfan · 23/12/2010 20:04

Please note that once you have had it it will take about 14 days to build up immunity, it is not instant.

tlise · 23/12/2010 20:05

I was told they weren't advising it before 15 weeks.

JimmyChoo17 · 23/12/2010 20:33

Just read the web chat. There were still a few items he never answered which was a shame.

From the responses above and reading his chat I would rather have the jab now than not seeing as I will be flying soon too.
