Good Afternoon all,
I just found out that I'm pregnant after my 1st month of TTC...we're a bit shocked as we weren't expecting it to happen so soon!

I saw my GP this morning who wasn't all that informative, just asked me to decide where I wanted to give birth. I've been doing a bit of research but thought it might be useful to post on here and try to figure out what I need to do next!!

I'm planning on buying a big book on pregnancy on my way home but all tips would be much appreciated while I try to figure it all out!

The Rough Guide to Pregnancy and Birth is a good one.
Also recommend that you join the relevant mumsnet antenatal thread - lots of advice there.

Good luck (from a newbie in week 33!!).

Congratulations. Your GP will refer you to the hospital and you'll get a letter giving you a "booking appointment" where you see a midwife and they open a file (you'll be astounded at the amount of paperwork involved in having a baby). You'll be sent for some blood tests and depending on family history and your own health you may be booked in for glucose tolerance test in case you develop gestational diabetes. Thats about it until the 12 week scan at which point they'll confirm everything is going ok and then again, unless there are any complications you'll be mostly left alone again until the 20 week anomaly scan (which is when you can find out the sex depending on if the hospital you are at will tell you). After that you'll see a midwife about every 4 weeks and discuss birth options etc. Hope that gives you a bit of an idea about the medical side of the process. Other then that, just buy ONE baby book. On the whole Mumsnet is better because you'll get many answers to the exact thing you are worrying about at that point rather than one paragraph!

hi im week 5 too this is going to be my 3rd!!!! cant believe weve done it we must be mad! Congratulations, mumsnet is really good for info and asking questions how ever silly you may think they are, they do usually give you a basic book when you have your "booking" which has some pretty awful pics of people giving birth!!! but has all basic info. (haha i cant even look at them now on baby 3!!)

good luck

Hello! I'm 10 weeks with my first and I have the rough guide and also "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" by Lesley Regan which I would recommend for useful medical info, pics of the developing baby and general reassurance! Also, re what might happen next with doc appts and things, at 10 weeks I have seen my GP twice (mainly because of sickness) and have been told I won't have any scans, tests etc or see a midwife til I go for my 12 week scan at the hospital. So, I don't know if different GPs / hospitals run things differently - I guess the best thing is to ask your GP or hospital antenatal unit what to expect. Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks to you all for your replies - I've had a few days to get my head around the news now and have told my parents (they would have guessed as I'm not drinking over Xmas!) I'm also starting to get used to the twinges without freaking out that something has gone wrong every time!

I'll have a look for the antenatal thread and get myself that Lesley Regan book - I've got another week before I'm back at work so should be able to get a bit of reading done between now and then!

thanks again!
