Downs risk 1 in 270 - low risk?

Hi, I've just had my triple test results back and the risk of downs and other defects is 1 in 270. They have classed this as low risk. My last pregnancy 2 years ago was 1 in 1500 and a friend of mine who is 10 years older than me has a risk of 1 in 1200. They couldn't do the nuchal fold test at the 12 wk scan because the picture wasn't clear enough. I'm a bit worried now. What are other ladies' results? x

I got 1 in 260 which did worry me (I was 30 at the time) - I think the cut off point where I live is 1 in 250. DD fine however and TBH I would hesitate to have this test done in future pregnancies.

Thank you 'Passion' for your reply. Mmmm, I think I need to stop worrying because it's not going to change the result.

Maybe it is better if you think about it as risk of a down baby is 0.37% ?

FannyLogan · 22/12/2010 18:02

Well that is a 99.63% chance that everything is normal.

I had a 1 in 3 a few weeks ago and the amnio came back normal.

Agree re worrying[and not to]very tricky with these tests as they are not telling you 100% positive and also what would you do if you were?
I have never had tests as I think I will get what I am given[if that makes sense]
Do try not to worry. There is also 269 chance that your baby will not have Down Syndrome. Also the spectrum is so wide I think these tests are irresponsible in many ways.
Try not to worry.

2catsand1rabbit · 22/12/2010 18:17

I would have a baby with Down definitely anyway but it's the other defects I worry about. Anyway, I must stop worrying (there's no point) and thanks for the replies I feel a bit better now.

They should have taken your bloods to test for Edwards and Turner syndromes at the same time. If you are worried, then get these done. My nuchal scan included these bloods. Had mine at Women's Wellness Center in Chelsea, London. Cost around GBP200 all inclusive, would highly recommend. Try not to worry. There is a very high probability that you will have a healthy baby.

Are you under 14.6 weeks? If you're worried, I would call the hospital and ask if you can have the nuchal scan again, which should help put your mind at rest.

minibmw2010 · 23/12/2010 12:00

Mine was 1/400 chance and I was surprised to hear it was classed as low risk but I think they assess it differently now. For instance, I am 37 and would normally be considered "an older mum" but I was told that because of new data, etc. they now consider 40 to be an "older mum" and a risk for Downs.

DS1 was 1 in 25,000, 2 years later DS2 was 1 in 240. Shocked me. Had an amnio, got the all clear. Hope it all works out well for you.

MumNWLondon · 23/12/2010 13:26

How many weeks are you? If under 14 weeks call hospital and ask for another nuchal scan.

Mine was less 1:50,000 but that was with the nuchal fold as well. I'm 35 and probably would have gone for an amnio with 1:270 combined with nuchal but not sure whether I'd read much into the triple test on its own.

There are downs markers they can look out for at 20 week scan.

JoEW · 23/12/2010 14:55

I got 1:280 and also thought that didn't seem as 'low risk' as I had hoped but, as others have said, it is still a very low risk, statistically. I'm 36.

They consider anything above 1:125 to be low risk. If you think about it 1:10 would still only be a 10% chance and that's a much higher risk.

2catsand1rabbit · 24/12/2010 14:03

I'm nearly 19 wks and 32 years old. They couldn't do a nuchal fold test at the 12 wk scan because the picture wasn't clear enough. I wasn't bothered at the time but now I'm thinking 'bum' if I'd had that and it had been fine I wouldn't be so worried. I've rung my midwife and she's given me the number of the diagnostic unit where the results came from. Going to ring them now. x

I wouldn't worry about it, my niece was high risk for downs syndrome but was fine.

Turned out she had autism instead [fbear]

No point in fretting.
