my mw told me i needed one last time i saw her but as we'd been waiting for 40mins and ds was very restless i forgot to ask why.

i didn't have one with ds
i'm not overweight
i have no history of diabetes

ds was big ish - 8lb10
i had a emcs

i don't mind doing one if i have to but i'd like to know why.
any ideas?

No idea Confused
I had one because I'm overweight.
A friend had hers because her first was big (nearly 10lb)

Could you give her a ring and ask her?

Deliaskis · 21/12/2010 09:19

Sugar in one of your samples?

soppypreggyloon · 21/12/2010 09:22

no sugar in my pee either - as it's dc2 i've hardly seen mw and i did ask both times about sugar in wee.
i remember asking because i had terrible morning sickness and the only things i could keep down/ wanted to eat were sugary! Hmm

i dont want mine done at 26 weeks either, am borderline on their BMI thing but i think thats bollocks anyways.

I don't think I will go, Can't bhave DD sat in her buggy for 3 hours!!

starfishmummy · 21/12/2010 09:37

I had one at 34 weeks. High glucose reading in pee two tests in a row. (was overwir=eght too, but that wasn't the deciding factor, the pee thing was).

Teleaddict · 21/12/2010 09:44

I am having one because I have PCO (I'm normal BMI)

soppypreggyloon · 21/12/2010 10:27

teleaddict - i have PCO but i had that last pg too and it didn't bother anyone then.
might ring MW when i try and make next appointment.

i thought i could go home after first test (well i assumed) and watch cbeebies with ds or something easy. but if i have to stay there for the duration then it'll have to be a nursery day which will mean time off work. there is no way i can keep ds occupied in a waiting room for that long without him trashing the place!

I was told I needed one at 30 weeks as I ticked 3 boxes - fat, old & Mum is pre-diabetic. They have a list and if you score 3 you get asked to take the test.

FindingAManger · 21/12/2010 10:32

from babycentre:

Who is at risk of developing gestational diabetes?
Women who have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy, or who have previously given birth to one or more large babies are at risk of gestational diabetes.

Other women who are at greater risk of developing the condition include:

? Women who are obese (BMI greater than 30)

? Older mothers (everyone's tendency to develop diabetes increases with age)

? Women with a parent or sibling who is an insulin-dependent diabetic

? Women with a family history of type 2 diabetes

? Women with high blood pressure

? Women who tested positive for sugar in urine during antenatal checkup

? Women who are Asian-Indian, African-Caribbean or from the Middle East.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2010 10:33

Because you've had a previous big baby, they suspect you had undiagnosed gestational diabetes last time. A previous baby 4kg or over is one of the "flags" for you having a GTT in the next pregnancy.

soppypreggyloon · 21/12/2010 10:38

findingamanger cheers for the list but...

? Women who are obese (BMI greater than 30)
BMI pre pg was normal

? Older mothers (everyone's tendency to develop diabetes increases with age)
i'm 29

? Women with a parent or sibling who is an insulin-dependent diabetic
no diabetics in family

? Women with a family history of type 2 diabetes
no diabetics of any sort in family

? Women with high blood pressure
BP is lower during pregnancy but always in normal range

? Women who tested positive for sugar in urine during antenatal checkup
no sugary wee

? Women who are Asian-Indian, African-Caribbean or from the Middle East.
i'm white british

this is why i'm confused.

viva ds was big - for my small frame and height but all wee tests in first pg were normal too - despite my over indulgence in hot chocolate and cake!

oh well i'll need to find more info if only to make arrangements to have ds out of the way when it happens

Even if your wee tests were normal last time you could still have had undiagnosed diabetes. A blood test is more accurate and can pick up diabetes even if your wee is clear hence why they want to do the GTT.

FindingAManger · 21/12/2010 10:41

very strange - can you not call midwife/hospital & ask them. Possibly they have made a mistake?

I would imagine it is due to the size of your first baby.

FWIW, my friend had completely normal urine at all her antenatal appointments and is very slim, but has a family history of type 2 diabetes, so was tested. She has GD and is struggling to control it, despite being extremely strict and sticking rigidly to the diet they have given her. She has lost so much weight she looks dreadful, all her bones show. Sad

me23 · 21/12/2010 17:53

your ds wasn't macrosomic according to NHS guidelines 4.5 kg(9.9lbs) is considered big and a risk factor for GD, so you don't have any risk factors at all.

like lunatic suggests it may be a mini gtt which a few hospitals offer as standard note the word 'offer' not 'need' you do not have to have any test done.

MrsCratchit · 21/12/2010 18:11

Everyone is tested in my PCT at 28 weeks whether considered at risk or not. The dual blood test is carried out.

trixie123 · 21/12/2010 19:23

it does seem to be becoming the norm. Try to leave your DS with someone else - its a long time to hang around

Applemuncher · 21/12/2010 20:54

I just thought it was standard - I'm not going to turn down a free test anyway but I haven't questioned why I'm having it - let us know if you find out.

LisMcA · 21/12/2010 21:09

Our hospital offers it to all women at 28 weeks regardless of weight age or any of the other considered risk factors.

bunnymother · 21/12/2010 21:22

Are you pregnant w twins or more? Grin At Queen Charlotte's they make you have a GTT at 28 weeks if you have a multiple pregnancy.

And a multiple pregnancy makes you want to eat more than a singleton pregnancy, which makes the test a bloody nightmare when all you want to do is eat cake and drink sweet tea all morning and makes you v resentful that you are missed out on cake and tea when you the results show you didn't even have have GD...

soppypreggyloon · 23/12/2010 08:47

Definitely only one baby!

NorthernLurker · 23/12/2010 08:54

YOu should be aware that if you 'fail' the test it WILL affect how your pregnancy and birth is managed. I am very dubious about the prevalence of GTT testing and refused it in my pregnancies (offered for high BMI) in my case.
