Discharge in pregnancy

Hope this isn't too graphic a message but you can probably guess its content from the title. I'm 18 weeks and have had some brown coloured discharge, with sort of bits in it (?) this morning and am a bit worried. I tried contacting my midwife to no avail and only got through to an answering machine at the Community Midwife office so managed to get an appointment with my gp. He listened to the baby's heartbeat, which was fine and said that discharge was quite common in pregnancy so not to worry but to go back if it got much worse or if there was any blood in it. He also suggested I take a few days off work. I have had quite a bit of white/ clear discharge but never this colour and despite the reassurances am still fretting.
Does anybody have any experience of this or know what could be causing it?
IS there any reason why if there is nothing wrong he would recommend I take time off work?
Sorry to rattle on so much.
TIA

Did he take a swab? You could have an infection. Is it foul smelling or irritating?
Discharges are common in pregnancy though so don't worry too much. I think he has recommended time off work for something to say!
Leave a message for ther midwife to come and see you.

Thanks MEars. It doesn't smell and isn't itchy and he didn't take a swab

Just keep an eye on things Hayls. If it gets worse see your GP/midwife. Otherwise it may just disappear.

Hayls. I had a discharge exactly as you describe on and off in my pregnancy from about 20 weeks. The first time I was sent for a scan and everything was fine. After that I didn't bother telling anyone because I felt okay. No idea what caused it.

I had that in my first pg, it only happened twice but I got a bit hysterical. The gp did a swab and diagnosed group B strep, I dont know if was related to the discharge or just lucky that the discharge led to a swab which led to this being diagnoed IYKWIM. Anyway I had a gorgeous boy at the end of it so obviously it turned out ok.

Thanks for all the advice. THankfully it's almost stopped now (just a bit of very light coloured stuff). I had a really horrible time yesterday and spent most of it in tears worrying about the baby, even after hearing the heartbeat I was still convinced there was something wrong but am feeling a bit more positive today.
Does anybody have any suggestions as to what may have caused it or if it's likely to come back? MW asked if I'd had nookie lately as it can sometimes cause it and think it was about the only time I laughed yesterday- fat chance!

Mine occured after sex so no nooky for me till 12 wks. I think a condition called cervical erosion may be a cause but I dont know much about it. Try a search.
