Talk to me about SPD/PGP, I have it but everything I read doesn't relate to me. I have it in my lower back, very deep and internal kind of behind my bumcheeks, not in my groin. If I lie down it's agony to get up again so it's better when im standing.
I'm worried about labour, hopefully i'll be active and mobile then in the pool, but if i need to be monitored i cant lie on my back on a bed because its agony. All i read is about being careful not to open your legs too wide, but this doesnt affect me.
Can anyone give any advice about labour with PGP? TIA

I had terrible SPD - I was waddling around like a penguin cowboy for a long time, and I worried about birth. I don't know if this is typical, but it didn't trouble me in birth at all (don't mean to worry you but birth hurts a lot more than SPD, but then again they generally give you drugs for it, if you want them!)

And after birth, it had just gone.

Oops, sorry!

The GP sent me to a class at the hospital for SPD. They basically said we should do pelvic floor excercises every day to strengthen the muscles.

Hi Ragazza,

I definitely can relate to your SPD symptoms, and found it very confusing when people talked about the pain being 'at the front'.

How many weeks gone are you now? I'm 31 weeks and in the last couple I have definitely had the pain move to the front as well as in the base of my spine and my hips so it could just be that it starts at the back and then moves around.

I don't really have any advice, and I'm also concerned about it getting worse, especially as it's getting very hard to sleep, and turn over in bed. Paracetamol is our friend!!!

Lots and lots of sympathy, and slow waddling...

14 years?! You poor thing Sad

I would back herbietea's suggestion that it's SI joint pain. I've got it on one side where LO is more on one side than the other and it's put my SI joints out of place. I also have SPD pain, at the front edge. I was referred to Physio pretty quickly. I have exercises to do and a weekly massage for the SI joint which really helps, it tends to pop back in to place and really mobilises me again. The pain was unbearable from 28 weeks and now 40+2, LO is still more on one side and the SI joint pain is now more painful than the SPD.

try this site it's a bit info overload, but it's quite helpful to know what you fall into, possibly Sacroiliitis / One-sided Sacroiliac Syndrome / Double Sided Sacroiliac Syndrome.

I had terrible SPD at the back on both SI joints in all 3 pregnancies, it's terrible, I really sympathise. I was on crutches by the end of recent pregnancy. However, I have to say that even though it was awful in the pregnancies - could barely walk into the hospital to give birth, it really did not cause problems in the labour - in fact, once they got going and the baby had dropped down a certain way it was actually a relief and the pain was much better (shortly replaced by other pain of course but hey ho!). Hope that is some consolation to you - first 2 times it went almost instantly after birth, this time gone within a few weeks with lots of ibuprofen. The only thing I can suggest is lots of physio and/or osteopathy. You may want to check whether you can take ibuprofen as I didnt and I think that is why it gets so critical in my pregnancies - I have since heard that some people do though?

I'm also interested in this thread - I have exactly what you describe OP. My midwife suggested I visit an osteo or chiropractor and I've been a couple of times. He says it's all because pregnancy has thrown my pelvic joints out of place and this is causing the pain. He supposedly re-aligns them and it seems to help a little (it can also help ensure baby gets into a good position for birth). might be worth a go? they dont come cheap though..

Thanks everyone, I'm 34 weeks today, I've been to physio but wasn't a lot she could do just told me to do nothing i.e walking, standing, housework, lifting, carrying etc which is really frustrating but it definitely helps, i just need to remember to take it easy! Xmas Smile
